Relax: This is just a tiny little rumor and nobody is remaking Breakfast at Tiffany's (yet). But apparently the idea of a remake has been bandied about for a long time now, with the major issue being, of course, who would take on the iconic Audrey Hepburn role, Holly Golightly?
In Variety, Liz Smith claims that "if anybody could be Holly Golightly in the 21st century, it's Anne" Hathaway who, Smith says, "has an unusually alert, charming way about her — elfin, sexy, princessy, without being prissy."
Do you agree with this assessment of Hathaway? She's certainly been getting a lot of attention lately — do you think she could pull off this role?

Part of me thinks yes, part of me says no. Audrey was so charming and effortlessly elegant...and not that Anne's not those things, but I don't know if she could quite capture the Audrey essence.
Honestly, I don't know who *could* though.
1I agree with emalove. Part of me wants to say yes but Anne seems a bit to harsh which is saying a lot because she's lovely and a good actress. I don't think anyone could play that part and I def. don't think it should be remade!
2I voted maybe.. I could maybe see her play the character in a "re-envisioned" film, but not a "re-make." Everyone knows you can't replace Audrey Hepburn.
3well Anne usually does clumsy goofy roles. i really dont think she could have that much elegance.
4o hell no! no no no no no!!!
5I kind of like Anne, but I think she's lacking that delicate, gamine quality that made Audrey so lovely. If anyone, I'd rather see Natalie Portman in the role. Anne seems sort of big and clumsy sometimes--the opposite of Audrey Hepburn.
6No one could ever, EVER replace Audrey in ANYTHING. EVER!
Remember what a disaster that remake of Sabrina was? There are just some movies that can't be remade. Some stars that can never be duplicated.
However, Anne is definitely the closest thing we have to an Audrey right now (along with Natalie Portman). I think she's beautiful and a nice person.
7No one can ever replaced Audrey. She has the style and charm that puts her on level of her own.
8I would go with Natalie Portman over Anne Hathaway.
9This is one of my favourite movies and I really hope it's not going to be re-made. It's a classic and SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED!! Audrey was perfect in the role.
10Absolutely, I love her!
11Remakes = vomit.
12Sorry, Anne, but no. It's not a matter of if she could capture Audrey, it's a matter of if she could capture Holly Golightly. Holly was such a fabulously interesting character, and the actress added just the right effortless charm to it, making a perfect combo. I don't know if the Anne is the right fit for such a character, I haven't seen enough of her acting range to know for sure.
Oddly, I do like the Natalie Portman suggestion. Her work in Closer reminds me of Holly Golightly. Exquisite desirability, charm, and soft vulnerability.
13i said yes, but the natalie portman suggestion is maybe better.
14No! While, I'm a really big admirer of Anne Hathaway's work, but I'm of the opinion that Breakfast at Tiffany's is hallowed reel (except for that offensive Mickey Rooney crap) that should not be reproduced.
I really don't think that any attempt at reproducing this film character (well, adapted to film character) would measure up to Audrey Hepburn's performance. She brought an authenticity to 'Holly Golightly' that I think is beyond any actress at this time.
I do agree that Anne Hathaway is probably the best choice if it came down to it. But, no.
15BTW, I can't imagine Anne Hathaway singing "Moon River," and I can't imagine any actress today being able to pull off the scene where 'Holly' and Paul gallivant about town doing things they've never done before.
16Meh. I'm tired of Hathaway. In anything.
17NO.NO.NO.NO.NO!
This is one classic that should not be touched. Not even with a ten-foot pole. The only way a remake would work is if the actress does a completely different take on Holly Golightly, otherwise the movie would just fail miserably.
Please please...don't make a mockery of my most favorite movie of all time. It would just be a travesty.
18Anne is lovely but please, no!
19yeah.. maybe.. they got similar physical features.. i mean, audrey and anne.. but i know it's not just a matter of physical appearance.. not sure if anne could "re-live" the character and make it the 21st version or whatever they call it
20God no. But Jude is right, Portman would be lovely.
21if they HAD to, then it could only be done by NATALIE PORTMAN. i fear anne would be irritating in this role, though i usually like her as an actress.
22no one can ever replace or even match Audrey, especially in that role, but if anyone culd come close, it's Anne. I think she does have a similar charm, beauty, elegance, vulnerability (seriously, have you seen Rachel Getting Married), and acting skills. I'm not saying she's as good as Audrey, but she's pretty damn close. I also like the Natalie Portman suggestion, but I'm not sure she has the charm and humor. I don't think this movie should be remade, but if it is, I like Anne for the role. but seriously, if Jennifer Love Hewitt could pull it off (in The Audrey Hephburn story), anyone can...
23o god. please, no remake. anne would be a good choice and all, but it's a wonderful classic. this is my favorite movie of all time. please, no remake!
24NO ONE could touch Audrey Hepburn. NO ONE. I love Anne Hathaway, but there isn't a soul on this planet that could touch Audrey Hepburn, even someone talented with the same initials. No one should try out of deference to Audrey Hepburn. If Anne Hathaway tries, I won't watch. The only people that will watch will be people that do not truly have a sense of Holly Golightly.
25I hope they leave it alone, it is a classic!
26Some things are better left alone and this definitely qualifies!
27Haha, does nobody remember the time Natalie Portman dressed up in that very dress? Popsugar had an entry on it!
http://www.popsugar.com/43655
28I love Anne, but they should never, ever remake this movie. Doesn't anyone remember when they remade Sabrina with Harrison Ford and Greg Kinner? Horrible.
29Thanks for the link Hoya. After seeing Portman in that dress, I know that if anybody can pull it off, it would be her. I don't think a remake is a good idea though. Why is Hollywood obsessed with recycling stories?
30Has anyone here read the book? It's much darker and very different from the film. Holly is a slightly overweight prostitute (well, perhaps "escort" is a better word) and the main male character is gay. I'd love to see a film version closer to the book, with someone really interesting in the lead role--I kind of think that Christina Hendricks from Mad Men would be a good choice--but it we do get a remake, they'll just redo the film. Hopefully without the Mickey Rooney character.
31God i hope they don't remake this movie.... I like Anne but she is not Audrey's level... the only person close enough maybe is Natalie Portman
32I can totally see it and I think she'd be good but I hated the original movie and don't see a need for a remake.
33i don't think that there are too many actresses that could do this role justice - and if we're talking about finding someone that 'looks' the part - then sure anne's ok, but i can't see her doing a great job with the material. it's kind of iconic - ya know?
34My first thought (before reading the comments) was Natalie Portman.
But then I realized it's best to just keep it as is. No remakes
35Is Hollywwod so hard up that they have to start re-making classics? Does nobody have an original thought anymore? What's next? A re-made Gone With The Wind?
36Natalie Portman...MAYBE, but seriously the movie is a classic? Why mess with it? It transends time. (In my opinion)
However, if they do and Anne plays Holly...I WILL THROW THINGS! I cannot STAND her! BAT is my favorite movie of all time, she will ruin it!
37Please, No.
38A part of me yes but then no at the same time.
39t and co I am so excited. I thought I was the only one who couldn't stand to watch her. In every role she is just so blah. She would ruin a BAT remake.
40No sorry, Audrey Hepburn was very pretty. Anne is not that's just one reason there are many other.
41I am a huge Breakfast at Tiffany's fan, a large part of that is due to Audrey. I don't think this should be remade, but if so, I think Anne isn't there yet. She is a good actress, but not for this part.
42I wouldn't mind her, but why remake it? It really really shouldn't be remade.
43i would rather see natalie portman doing that role but yes, i think anne can pull it off
44there are movies that just shouldn't be remade.
... BAT is on the top of that list. and when the original part was played by Audrey it's pahetic to eve compare anne to her
45She can because she has a "classic" look.
46On the other hand, Hollywood should keep classic movies, classic, and just be more creative and write their own flicks. Ugh, remakes are so annoying sometimes.
No one can pull off a remake of Breakfast at Tiffany's..
the reason it is a classic is the combination of the shocking subjects for that time period of a kept man by an older married woman and basically a well meaning but greedy needy psychologically screwed up girl that pays the bills by being an escort who keeps the powder room money.
It is forever held together by that moment in cinema history and that specific cast.
Don't mess with perfection cause ya can't come up with any other original ideas.
47In order for anyone to EVER step into the role of Holly Golightly again, the movie would have to be drastically updated, rewritten, and modernized - the way "Clueless" was an adaptation of "Emma". Probably best not to tinker with this one, though.
48In casting this part there would be a difficult dilemma in that any casting director would be bound to looking for someone exactly like Audrey. Then they'd realize their search and point are futile because the perfect film had already been made of the short story.
49That said, if they were to make a version more faithful to the original Capote copy, and cast a racist Texan turned frenchified New Yorker...Leighton Meester!
However she's already carving out her own niche as a Holly Golightly in the 21st century whose character already worships Hepburn and Tiffany's.
It's a mute topic.
Don't. Just don't.
Some things are sacred.
