Rumor has it today that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (now opening July 17) has received a PG rating ("For scary images, some violence, language, and mild sensuality"), rather than the PG-13 rating given to some of the previous Potter movies.

Do you think this will affect the story to an annoying degree? Will the movie be able to do the book justice with a PG rating? Or will you just be happy if the darn thing comes out on time?

I really hope the rating isn't an indication that the movie isn't going to do proper justice to the book. It's one of my faves in the series.
1Well, I'm kinda gld it's rated PG. My 10 yr is very into the HP movies and this kinda relieves me that there won't be any *mature* issues in the movie. There's nothing more embarrassing when you take your kid to a movie and it's filled with unexpected objectionable material ('Hancock' is a prime example)
2This one is one of the darkest, if not the darkest, in the series I think. There's a lot of issues going on with death [and life], obligation, sacrifice, the shades of gray behind truth, etc. Not to mention the romances. On some level I'd love to read this book from Malfoy's point of view.
I hope the movie does the book justice. Hopefully the rating won't hamper it any, and hopefully this one goes better than the third or forth movies did.
If this was the 7th movie I wouldn't be worried at all, the tone is much lighter. Half-Blood Prince as PG? Not so sure.
3This is one of the darker books in the series. I can't imagine it'll actually follow the book to any respectable degree and still come away with a PG rating. This is supposed to be based on a book where the characters are ~16, and aside from the magic & the evil that they face, they do things 16 year-olds do. What a disappointment.
Also, who takes a 10 year old to a PG-13 movie, which is rated PG-13 for action, violence, and language, one which was originally rated R and had to be re-edited for a PG-13 rating... and is surprised that there's material not appropriate for a 10 year old?
4If it does not hamper the movie, fine, but the Harry Potter books are darker now, and the movies should illustrate it.
5Nah don't care. The HP movie audience is getting older too. My nephew first read the first book at what 9 or 10? Now he's 19. He still periodically re-reads the books and if JK changed her mind and put out a new HP book he'd buy it (or expect it as a gift) and he'd do his usual and read it in one sitting.
He and his friends who are all 18 and 19 still have love for HP and already plan to see the movie with their girlfriends. Only now as a joke they'll probably dress as the characters and mock the Cosplay grown ups.
6I am curious as to what they toned down to get that PG rating. As a marketing ploy its totally understandable but they need to realize that a lot of people are hoping that the content of the novel (specially this one and the last one)will not be sacrificed to make more money
7Also its not like the PG13 rating was stopping anyone from taking their 6 year old kids to see the movie
8Ditto Laurel.
9'Also, who takes a 10 year old to a PG-13 movie, which is rated PG-13 for action, violence, and language, one which was originally rated R and had to be re-edited for a PG-13 rating... and is surprised that there's material not appropriate for a 10 year old?'
I agree. Hancock was kinda my fault really. I didn't pay attention to the rating or read the Parent's Guide To Movies at IMDB. All I saw was Will Smith + cool superhero summer movie= Good times! Usually, Will Smith makes *safe* movies, and I was under impression it was kid comic book hero movie (like The Incredible Hulk, Iroman, etc), so I didn't think twice about. I will definately check IMDB Parent's Guide when I'm unsure of a movie's content.
10Sorry, didn't get to finish. I hope they don't take out the part with Sectumsempra. That was one of the best parts of the book!
11LadyLiLa, I can't imagine how they'd put Sectumsempra in there with a PG rating!
12I'm kind of glad. A film can be dark without being violent (if that's what they toned down), and to be honest I was really turned off by some rather gruesome scenes in the last films (and snakes eeeeek, but that's another subject).
I wonder how the new rating will translate in the film though..
13Ugh. There go my plans of having a 21st birthday party. Everyone will be watching Harry-bloody-Potter. *sigh*
14(That said, I don't really care what it's rated. Book 6 is not among my favorites.)
15I dont really think it will effect it too much. the rest were PG right? and they could show Cedric dying and Harry getting tortured by umbridge, and various other "darker" themes.
16i don't really care much about what the rating is - i've never really been into the HP stuff - and i figure that i'll have the same impression of this one as i did with the last one (which was the very first one that i saw).
17as long as its true to the book then i don't care what the rating is- if they can get all the important parts in and still keep it pg then fine. but if it affects the story i'll be mad
18I have not read any of the Harry Potter book yet but I love the movies. I just hope that the PG rating will not affect the integrity of the story.
19This annoys me a little. I'm just thinking of all the people that will bring young children in and all the talking they will do asking their mommy 'What does that mean?'
20In case you were wondering... no, she doesn't get to go see it.
21Well at least with the PG rating, I can go into the movie knowing ahead of time that it's not going to remotely live up to the book.
22I don't care about the rating but I think it will affect the box office. 12 year old girls who hava a crush on Daniel radcliffe don't want to go to the movies with their parents and now they can go by themselves!
23CaterpillarGirl, the last two, the ones in which Cederic died, and in which Umbridge tortures Harry, were both PG-13.
24Oh dear. I don't like this. It means it probably won't do the book justice and it wont have all the dark stuff that makes it interesting.
25A PG? Why? The book is seriously dark so how are they going to put it across of they only gave it a PG? I reckon its going to be 12A here in the UK though. Hell, nearly every film has been classed 12A since they brought the bloody thing into circulation.
26Oh I was PISSED when I found out!!
27Isn't this still a rumor? Either way, it doesn't really matter to me. I'll probably go see this with my friends at midnight and hopefully there won't be too many teenyboppers up that late.
28I'm really annoyed at this. Book 6 is one of the darkest in the series. If they are going to take away all the intense scenes to get a lower rating, it will definitely affect the film.
29SPOILER IN THIS STORY!!!!!!!
I have to say that I agree with JessNess, who cares if it is a PG-13 they still going to take their 6 year olds!
30But what I have to say is that I think it should be a 16V the trailers look really dark all the cast have said that, "it is so dark it is black", and the book is totally crazy I am busy rereading it for the 3rd time and it is DARK!
But also they have cut out the most important part of the movie, the scene with war in between the death eaters and the Howarts teacher, they said: "there is a war in the seventh film so they don't want to take away from that and there will be to much war then". which I think is junk because we will only see the way in 2011! but getting back to this topic! the film shoul be a 16 i think! but they can't do that coz the film is for "younger humans"
so they will probably cut the most important stuff out! such as the Sectumsempra part and all the crazy stuff, but in the advert you see, (if you look properly and carefully), the inferius crawling up the little island in the cave scene. but any way, i am excited!!!!
It really depends on whether the ratings board is judging the PG & PG-13 rating on the same basis as they have been for the past few years. However, I would assume they are, and that so, hopefully, this isn't an indication of a strongly censored Harry Potter. No matter, I'll be there opening night!!
