Have you ever meant to get into a TV show but never had the time — till suddenly it was a few seasons in and you feared you'd never get caught up? That's what inspired this new occasional feature, Five Essential Episodes. Kind of like Getting Into for television, I'll choose the five episodes of a current show that are the most important for new fans to check out.

The first show I'm tackling is Friday Night Lights, which returns to start its third season on NBC on Jan. 16 after previously airing on DirecTV. I've seen a number of the DirecTV episodes and can say they're outstanding; I imagine many of them would end up on a future list of essentials. But for now, I'm sticking to episodes that aired in the first and second seasons. For the record, I'm assuming you know the premise and/or can also get your hands on the pilot episode. That said, here are my five essential episodes:
- "Wind Sprints" — The third episode of the show's first season had one of the most iconic images of the series: the whole team running sprints up and down a sloppy, muddy hill in the rain, followed by Coach Taylor making Tim Riggins walk home while everyone else takes the bus. I'm not sure what falls harder when I watch this one: the rain or my tears.
- "Black Eyes and Broken Hearts" — This season one episode comes on the heels of a walkout by the team's black players — led by star Smash Williams — over a racially charged comment made by an assistant coach. It's a great balance of FNL's meatier moments (the walkout story, the Taylors worrying about Julie's friendship with bad girl Tyra) and lighter ones (Matt trying to buy a gift for Julie).
To see the other three, read more.
- "Mud Bowl" — There's just something about rain that must bring out the best in FNL. This gem comes toward the end of the first season and includes not just a football game in a mucky field but some juicy developments with Jason Street, Landry waving around Our Bodies, Ourselves, and a really shocking Tyra-related twist that would unfortunately lead to some of the worst parts of season two — but it seemed right at the time!
- "State" — To think, the first-season finale could have been the final FNL ever! And what a satisfying episode it is, with the Panthers taking on their toughest football foe yet, Tami getting some information that will change her family's lives forever, and one of the most awkward and cold motivational speeches in the history of football.
- "Leave No One Behind" — The second season was a little rough for FNL, but the show was back on track by the time this episode rolled around. The most stunning scene comes when Coach Taylor literally throws Matt in a cold shower, but Smash's sudden doubts about playing college ball bring up some shiver-inducing moments of their own.
FNL fans, what's on your list of essentials?

Great choices, Buzz! ALL of season one is my favorite! Season 2 struggled a bit, but even when FNL wasn't it's best, it was still better than anything else on network TV. Believe me, I'm counting down the days until Season 3 begins on the 16th!
1Season 3 will NOT disappoint! Like Buzz said...its been outstanding!
2I love FNL! I can't wait for it to start again and get my weekly fill of Riggins!
3Great episodes, Buzz. I cannit wait until this comes back on NBC!!!
4Oh Tim Riggins, how I've missed your smoldering eyes and sexy biceps...sexy everything, really. Welcome back.
Good choices on the episodes. I have to say I sort of loved the scenes from "Leave No One Behind" where Tim takes Matt under his bad-boy wing and Landry tries to push him in the other direction.
5this is a great idea! sadly, i'm not feeling the FNL love, maybe one day...
6It kills me that more people don't watch this show. It is by far the best acting and writing on television. I've seen most of season three and like buzz said it was outstanding. I'm sad to think that season three is probably the last we'll see of Coach Taylor, Tami and the rest of the Dillon Panthers.
7sanfran...I'm hear ya! It makes me sad to think this season could be the end. I tell everyone I know to check the show out. I really, really hope it gets more viewers this time around.
8I hate typos....
I meant to say I hear ya, not I'm hear ya. Sorry!
9I've never watched it, but after finding out it's shot near Austin I'll give it a try (I was there last week and loved it
want to feel like I'm on holiday again). Plus I love Kyle Chandler.
10Cannot wait for the 3rd season to start! I've missed my Panthers!! Great cast all around.
111. Pilot (1.01)
122. Hello, Goodbye (3.04)
3. Mudbowl (1.20)
4. Leave No Man Behind (2.14)
5. Underdogs (3.12)
I like all your picks, but I have some other favorites.
1.State
2.Mudbowl (the scene kiss in the cow pasture alone is worth this spot!)
3.Eyes Wide Open--Kyle Chandler should have won an Emmy for this one. Great scenes with Jason and Matt.
4.Let's Get it On--season two, mainly for the great scenes with Eric and Tami.
5.Leave No One Behind
I've seen season three so far, and it's fantastic, but be warned, the first episode of the season, while very good, has a lot of exposition in it as it tries to get viewers caught up. However, that also makes it a great episode for brand new viewers who haven't seen the show before. They'll get some back history and will be able to follow what is going on.
13Oh, you guys who are putting them in order 1-5 are much bolder than I am! I wussed out and went chronological. If I had to choose a #1 from my list I think it would be "Mud Bowl," but that's so hard!
14Fantastic list Buzz for a fantastic show. It pains me that more people watch Grey's and American Idol that this perfect show. Heartbreaking.
15I agree with every pick on this Top 5 - but you can't ignore the excellent pilot, in which the most shocking development occurs during a game and pretty much changes the destiny of all these amazing characters.
And on that Coach Taylor pic can I just say "Squee!"
Buzz, over the break my brother made me watch the pilot. I couldn't believe how good it was. I totally forgot! Watching Lila crying in her cheerleading uniform in the hospital was heartbreaking. I think that's a total must watch!
16And also what made that scene in 'Wind Sprints' extra special was the FANTASTIC song they used in it. Its by Scottish band Mogwai and I've been in love with that song for about 10 years now.
