Now that his projects Hairspray and Bedtime Stories have proven successful, director Adam Shankman is moving on to the next big thing: A remake of Bye Bye Birdie. So far Shankman is signed on to develop and produce the "long-gestating remake." Here's more:
A stage favorite for the past half-century, Birdie centers on Conrad Birdie, a popular singer whose character is based loosely on Elvis Presley. He's about to be shipped off to the army, but as part of a publicity stunt, he agrees to one last encounter with a fan before he goes to war.
The 1958 musical has had several screen adaptations, including an Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke version in 1963 and a television movie starring Jason Alexander in 1995.
Columbia has been developing an updated version for a number of years, with the logline at one point re-imagining the title character as a hip-hop star.
Hmm. . . a hip-hop star? I find it interesting that this has been so long in the making and it makes me wonder why. Is there something about Bye Bye Birdie that makes this difficult? And who will they get to play the lead characters?

Ooooh! Amy Adams should definitely play Kim McAfee (the Ann-Margaret character. I know she is supposed to be in high school, but I just love Amy Adams!
1AH LORD leave Bye Bye Birdie alone please. Dont update it, it will lose its entire meaning and joy.
2Stories like this make me very disappointed in the movie industry. This has already been recreated and it wasn't any good. Just leave the original alone please. I am one who is always excited about a good musical being made into a movie however I draw the line at a remake of a classic. Soon we will be hearing of A Chorus Line remake.
3If they cast Zac Efron as Birdie, I'm out.
4I agree, please leave it alone...a hip-hop star really? Sounds direct-to-DVD to me. What sad news!
5Bye Bye Birdie is my favorite musical. I love it and probably won't like the new on no matter what. However, I can totally understand why they haven't found the right star to play Conrad (Think Elvis).
Just no Justin Timberlake, please, I would puke!
6I love this musical too, but honestly, no one can do it justice...
7I hope that they get an unknown for Kim. Don't know why---I just don't really want to see the HSM clan taking over the movie. Now that HSM is all over for them, BBB seems like the next logical step. I could see Amy Adams as Rosie maybe... Neil Patrick Harris as that other guy? Maybe?
8i hope this is not going 2 be as awful as it sounds! :/
9I was in this musical in high school... I can't imagine it being remade into a movie. And with a hip hop star?? It sounds like a disney channel movie or direct to DVD....
10leave it alone! it is a charming and timeless classic. let's leave it that way, geez!
11GROSS GROSS GROSS...no remake especially with hip hop.
12If they do BBB, they better not add Hip-Hop. It'll ruin it and please no HSM stars please.
