No, not every song on this playlist is "rock," but they all rock in their own ways, and they're all fun. I enjoy some of the new takes on old favorites that have come out over the past few years (Aimee Mann's songs, Sufjan Stevens's holiday CD box set), and of course, there are a few shout-outs to rockin' holiday tunes that aren't too recent ("Christmas in Hollis" and "Run Rudolph Run"). The one sure thing is that these are not your traditional old carols.
What are your favorite rockin' modern(ish) holiday songs? To check out a playlist of some of my personal favorites, read more.

I heart Christmas in Hollis...it always makes me think of Die Hard. Love that Argyle!
1That is the best version of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer ever, I always thought that story was a little messed up.
2Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday - Nsync
Merry New York Christmas - Rob Thomas
I heard both of them on the radio today and they always make me happy
3All the christmas music I need is Aimee Mann's One More Drifter in the Snow!
The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" is fantastic as is No Use for a Name's cover of the song, and as are the songs on The Vandals' Oi to the World album. No Doubt did a nifty cover of the song "Oi to the World" as well, back when No Doubt was palatable.
Every now and again I'll put on Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but its favor continues to wane from year to year.
4How modern? Well...I like some of the covers on the Maybe This Christmas CDs like Xmas Cake by Rilo Kiley. I also like Christmas on The Beach by Irene and The Raveonettes' Christmas songs. Some of my favorites though are the older ones like Ronettes Christmas songs and the music from The Nutcracker.
5I love the Barenaked ladies version of God rest ye merry gentlemen. Always makes me smile.
6I like the mix you put together. I also love the Ronettes songs and White Christmas by the Drifters, but this year the one I'm really enjoying is Mambo Santa Mambo by the Enchanters. It's completely goofy and fun.
