The final episode of Pushing Daisies of 2008 is a doozy, all full of daddy issues and betrayals and Norwegians. Yup, turns out that Emerson's PI business has a rival in the form of three Norwegian detectives who are surprisingly reminiscent of some other folks we know, and Vivian's hired them for a case pretty close to Emerson's heart: the mysterious disappearance of one Dwight Dixon. This episode has a lot of twists and turns and one shocking reveal, so to get to talking about it, just read more.
This whole season of Daisies has, in large part, been about Ned's abandonment issues. His dad left him; he stopped being able to trust people. His dad got a new family; he felt sad and lonely. But how would it change Ned's life to know that his dad was around the whole time, watching over him, making sure he didn't get himself into too much trouble? This episode suggests that Ned's father is the one who set up Dwight Dixon's fake murder scene and saved Ned and Olive from near-certain death — and now he's in the Pie Hole, possibly ready to make himself known. How long has Papa Piemaker been lurking? Does he know about Ned's powers? Does he have powers of his own?
Meanwhile, I loved everything about the Norwegians, from their matchy-matchy sweaters to their mobile lab (MILF!). It makes sense to me that Olive would go running to them — after all, she'd just proven her mettle as Emerson's "itty-bitty," and now she's back to being left out. In fact, I think she would have been justified in actually working for the Norwegians, not just operating in "deep cover" and waiting for Ned or Emerson to come calling. It really must be hard to be Olive, always being told she can't be trusted with secrets. If she did know the truth about Ned and Chuck, though, I wonder if she'd react like Vivian did upon learning the truth about Dwight — wondering if perhaps it was better not to know.
The episode ends with Ned making a big decision: He's not going to use his power anymore. Not for good, not for evil, not for the sake of saving banged-up fruit. "Waking the dead creates too many unfortunate variables," he tells Chuck, and he doesn't want anybody else cleaning up his messes. But can he really abstain? Ned without a power is just a piemaker again, and while that might be nicer for everyone, it seems like a promise that will be hard to keep.
Some other thoughts:
- Poor Vivian, so convinced Dwight really loved her. Her reaction when Lily told her the truth really says something about their relationship: Vivian is almost always naive, and Lily is almost always right.
- Also, loved Vivian's conception of "intimate" relations: "long walks, clarinet concertos . . . "
- Someone on the Daisies set can't spell "cemetery," because one copy of the note from Lily totally said "cemetary" instead. Did I just blow you away with my nerdiness?
- Considering he stole Ned's car and is out in the world somewhere with a bandaged-up dead face, Chuck's dad causes surprisingly little trouble in this episode.
- "Oh, look at that. A dumb idea just found a friend." — Emerson.
- Chuck's button story is so sweet! She also has a good point about her connection with her dad being deeper now even when they're not together: Nobody else can really understand being alive, dead, and alive again.
- Getting to hear Jim Dale say "Oh, hell no" is pretty much the best thing ever.
What do you think is the story with Papa Piemaker? Will we ever get to hear the story about how Ned maybe once upon a time had a crush on Olive? So many questions, and only three episodes to go. What did you think?

1It sucks that Pushing Daisies is getting cancelled just as its starting to get really good! I can't believe Ned's dad is back!
I have a theory...maybe Ned's father has the same powers as Ned, and Ned died at some point in his childhood, but his dad brought him back to life. Then his dad left because he didn't want to risk touching him again and killing him. The person who saved Ned & Olive had gloves on...which was supposed to suggest that it was Charles Charles, but maybe it's Ned father! And that would explain why he had gloves on...
2How many more episodes are left? I love this show.
3I knew it was his dad! and good theory californiagirl that would explain him leaving ned, but what about his brothers? How come we never see those two anymore?
4George Hamilton as Ned's dad?!? My jaw darn near hit the floor when I realized that. Now I don't know if Ned is cool enough to play his son.
5Also how about the part when Ned confessed that he looked at Olive they way he looked at chuck so sweet.
6My hubby and I were also speculating californiagirl's theory last night... but then did he also bring Ned's twin brothers back to life and can't go near them for the same reason? If it was just Ned I would understand, but three kids? And he was touching the twins at the magic show before he left them.
7Great recap of a great show, Buzz. Oh how I will miss Pushing Daisies once the series ends.
8caligirl and kia my husband and I were also speculating about Ned's father's need of gloves. Maybe Ned was dead and then alive again and maybe his father left to make sure he wouldn't be dead again or maybe he found out Ned had the power and couldn't deal and then had another family and was so guilt ridden that he just ran away. Although something occurs to me now that I'm thinking about it. Ned's dad lefthim when he was what 9 or something? Then ned went looking for him on Halloween and was only a couple of years older but he saw his dad with the twins who were at least 6 ish. Maybe Dear old Pie Maker senior had a family on the side the whole time. All I know for sure is that I'm so sad to see this hsow end. I really wish ABC would reconsider. Also I nearly died when Ned admitted that he had possibly looked at Olive the way he looks at Chuck. Oh boy last night's episode was just one big kick in the patoot for poor Olive. I really wish they would tell her the truth. I mean she already thinks Chuck is faking her death and she hasn't uttered a word about it, why don't they think she could handle the truth.
9Hmm...you all have got me thinking about the theories! Oh, I hope the last few episodes are good because this will be torture without any closure.
10How can anyone not love Olive. I loved when hanging onto Ned, hanging from a cliff, she said, "Thank God for my naturally clingy nature"!!!
11"because one copy of the note from Lily totally said "cemetary" instead"
Hee! I noticed that too! *high 5's the nerdy ones*
12I so love this show. It does seem to be getting better every episode, and ABC is so foolish in letting this magic go. I hope the final three episodes get aired!
13My favourite show! Studio execs....le sigh.
14I am seriously going to sob when this show is over. I don't normally get this wrapped up, but this is such a good show.
I loved the part where Ned admitted to looking at Olive like that.
AND I loved Emerson's talk with vivian about how charlotte's soul was untouched. It was lovely and made me tear up a little.
