A couple of hours have passed since the Golden Globe nominations were announced, and yet even with the extra time to mull things over, I still feel about the same as I did when I first saw the list: kinda baffled. They're all over the place! James Franco now has a major award nomination from a movie about pot! There's a category that's basically Neil Patrick Harris vs. HBO! Things are nutty this year. Here are a few of my snap judgments:
- First of all: This is going to be one awfully fun group of people drinking in a room together. Brad and Angelina, both nominees; Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes, another happy and multiply-nominated couple; Mickey Rourke and Meryl Streep and Colin Farrell and Frances McDormand all together; Tom freaking Cruise.
- I can't remember a year when so many of the Best Motion Picture - Drama nominees weren't even in theaters yet (and won't be for weeks!). At the moment, I'm pretty stunned that Milk wasn't nominated, but will I still feel that way after seeing Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road, and Frost/Nixon?
- James Franco got a nomination for a movie where he makes a joint shaped like a cross. I mean, I kind of love it.
- The Supporting Actor category for movies kind of annoys me, truth be told. I think Tom Cruise is funny enough in Tropic Thunder but there are tons of other actors I'd nominate before Cruise in this category. For starters, there are three men in Changeling I would very much rather see nominated. And does anybody think that his performance is on par with that of his fellow nominee in this category, Heath Ledger?
- Hooray for Anne Hathaway and Sally Hawkins. Those are two of my favorite performances of the year.
- However, one of the most baffling things on there is Mamma Mia! nominated for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. It's a fun movie to watch, but is it a best anything? No. No, no, and no. Maybe Best Hot Mess? That might be it!
For more of my thoughts, just read more.
- I knew I had to see Slumdog Millionaire, but now I really, really have to see Slumdog Millionaire.
- On the TV side, nice to see January Jones get some recognition for Mad Men (alongside Jon Hamm, of course).
- In similar news, I'm thrilled to see Debra Messing right up there alongside Tina Fey and Mary-Louise Parker for her work on The Starter Wife. I'm really enjoying that series and it's largely due to the always enigmatic Messing.
- The Golden Globe TV nominations are usually a lot of fun, because they tend to embrace new shows and shows that are just kind of small and cute, but this year is one big yawn. I guess I'm sort of happy about True Blood . . .
- It is interesting that cable totally continues to dominate, though: six out of 10 of the series nominees are on cable.
- I've assumed it was coming for weeks now, but Heath Ledger's nomination still gave me chills.
What are you guys all thinking?

Mama Mia? Uh, no thanks. But the James Franco thing totally cracks me up.
1I CANNOT believe Benjamin Button was nominated over Milk. Travesty. On a completely non-related issue, Buzz, the Claus Palm Centro blue "border" around drives me nuts and makes it hard to focus on the content of your site.
2I think nominating Tom Cruise in the same category as Heath Ledger is just plain offensive. Ledger's performance was brilliant and genius. You completely forgot it was him. Such a ridiculous nomination. Not to mention, as someone on another site pointed out, Jack Black was also pretty good in Tropic Thunder. He was also actually billed in the film.
3I'm with Nitachequita on that border. I even tried to adblock it, but it didn't work.
4Mamma Mia! is nominated in the category "Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical "
5I agree completely with your take on the nominations, Buzz. Mamma Mia? No. Tom Cruise? Please.
6littlemissme — Right. I know it's in the proper category for what it is, I just still don't think it's deserving!
7Buzz, I totally agree, sure Mama Mia is a fun musical, but there were so many other movies out this year that could have taken it's place.
8I am thrilled that In Bruges is nominated. That movie was hysterical.
9Milk is so deserving of a nomination; I'm disappointed in that one and in Mama Mia which did get a nod. Love that Mad Men, Jon Hamm and January Jones are nominated; hope they take all three honors. Some of the other categories are baffling.
10i think that it's great that tom got the nod actually. seeing as how people didn't know that he had a big part in the movie until they saw it and he MADE the movie in my opinion - well that's just how things go i think.
i'm still very baffled about things seeing as how burn after reading wasn't that good and i don't really think that angie did anything that was worth talking about.
11I can't even dignify the Tom Cruise thing by commenting, so I move on to Mamma Mia. I thought it was a big ol' mess as well, and was appalled to see it on the list, but then I thought, what would I put in its place? This was a pretty disappointing year for comedy. I've come up with two substitutes - Son of Rambow, which was a small film but awesome to those of us who saw it and Iron Man - can't we call Iron Man a comedy?
12Milk was good, but I will withhold saying it should have been nominated until I see the movies that were nominated.
13I was stoked to see Slumdog get so many nominations because it was awesome. But I've seen most of the nominated films and The Wrestler was seriously neglected. Aronofsky should have been nominated, hands down.
14I don't think Mamma Mia should have been nominated. It was a fun film, but definitely not worthy of a Golden Globe.
I thought Tom Cruise was in the Best Supporting Actor Comedy category and Heath Ledger was in the Best Supporting Actor Drama Category. So how could they be running against each other?
15Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture is one general category at the Golden Globes; they only separate Drama and Comedy/Musical in the Motion Picture and Lead Actor/Actress categories.
16What do you expect from the Golden Globes? They're a complete sham.
17Lol wow. I think it's funny people making assumptions about some of the movie's that's nominated but haven't even been released yet. But I'll agree with the Tom Cruise thing. He was hilarious, but there are so many other people who should've taken the spot. I too Buzz which some of the guys from Changeling was nominated too, they were great in that movie.

19I've got a few problems - Mama Mia and True Blood being two of them - but, come on, no LOST noms?!?! TIME named "The Constant" the best episode of 2008...where's the love???
20Hang on - Buzz, can they even nominate films that haven't been released? How the hell does that work?
The Tom Cruise nomination is a joke. Period.
21amkc — Good question! The rules are that the movie just has to be making it into a theater in LA before the end of the calendar year (which is why you see so many movies trying to squeak in at the end of the year!), and it must have been screened for the people who are allowed to vote.
22I woke up super early to hear these nominations and to hear James Franco's name not followed by the word Milk, cracked me up so much. But I almost love the diversity.
23I also wish that Christopher Nolan and the Wackness got some recognition, but sadly no.
Thanks for letting me know, lilkimbo! That seems odd.
amkc - I think the Hollywood Foreign Press has already seen the movies, the films just haven't been released to the general public yet.
24How do you nominate Tom Cruise for anything and then not nominate Pushing Daisies and The Dark Knight?? Do not understand award shows.
25It's the "Hollywood Foreign Press" as opposed to, you know, the ACTUAL international press in Hollywood.
26Tom Cruise? Over Heath LEDGER? That's something that will never happen. And Neil Patrick Harris better take outBest Supporting Actor in a TV Series, becuase him as Barney is the best. Fingers crossed for Hugh Laurie because he really deserves it.
27i haven't seen really any of the movies nominated but i really love Kate Winslet and i'm happy that she has 2 shots....she deserves an Oscar, so hopefully she's nominated for that too!
james franco....lol
yay for Kevin Connolley (sp?). i love entorage and its about time he gets a nod...its always Jeremy Piven.
The Starter Wife is great...i love Debra Messing, she is hilarious.
28James Franco nominated for a Judd Apatow pot movie co-starring Seth Rogen?
AWESOME.
29This years nominations are all wrong!
