It's solo surgery time on Grey's Anatomy this week, and that feeling of being all alone — often with someone else's life in your hands — runs all through this episode. Life as a surgical resident is lonely, it seems, unless you have the ghost of your dead boyfriend to keep you company. To talk about it, just read more.
Cristina starts the episode with the ultimate reward and the ultimate punishment. She wins the solo surgery, but because she's banned thanks to the whole intern surgery cabal thing, she has to pick which of the residents will perform it in her place. The writers make a brief show of pointing out that there are other doctors at Seattle Grace (who was that blonde girl?), but it's pretty obvious that it's going to be Mere, George, Izzie, or Alex. Watching them plead their cases is hysterical: Mere claims not to want it just cause they're friends; George talks about how much he's grown; Izzie says she doesn't care because she's having great sex (about which more later); Alex hits Cristina where it counts by describing how to do the procedure. That — plus Dr. Dixon's advice that Cristina use a simple system to decide, which seems more Cristina-esque than going with her gut — makes Alex the easy winner.
What happens in the aftermath is even more dramatic: Alex tells Izzie he ("frickin'") loves her! Which would probably mean a lot more had Izzie not been sleeping with Denny at that very moment. Apparently, the new status quo is that Denny hangs around Izzie at the hospital and makes wisecracks, and sometimes she talks to him, and nobody really notices except for George. So anyway, Denny's especially fond of making gagging noises or weird faces when Alex is around, and he definitely does not like Alex telling Izzie he loves her, but Izzie eventually pulls herself together and goes to assist on the surgery. Because, you know, Denny's not real. Cristina, meanwhile, yells at everyone for not taking any responsibility for the intern-surgery disaster and Meredith specifically for making it personal, and then she gets whisked away by Owen Hunt to . . . a vent. That spews air and apparently makes you happy again.
Meanwhile, so much other stuff happens:
- Lexie and Mark work on a patient who hasn't spoken in years, and when she finally gets the courage to say "hi," Lexie gets the courage to go to Mark's and take all her clothes off. His restraint lasts until she's at the tank top phase.
- The second Meredith's patient yells that she wishes her sister would die, it's pretty obvious where that's going. Don't text and drive, kids.
- Sadie and Callie are maybe flirting, but Callie can't really tell, because she doesn't know how flirting with girls works. Also, is ABC really going to let Grey's start up another lesbian relationship right now? Doubtful.
- Bailey won the solo surgery of her class — no big shock there — but now that she's bored with her work, she gets all cute and gushy in Mark's surgery.
- I liked the throwback to the very first episode with all the residents taking bets on how long Alex would go without making a mistake.
- Speaking of which, at one point George points out that he did heart surgery in an elevator, and Alex says that was more than a year ago, and he's 007. Except . . . 007 was longer ago. Bad logic, Alex.
So: Lexie and Mark get sexy, George thinks there's something up with Izzie, Cristina and Hunt are all kissy on the vent, and McDreamy is almost nowhere to be seen. (Now I kind of think he's the one in those blind items.) What did you all make of this one?

The Denny storyline is just dumb. Even if it is an aneurysm (or something like it).
Anyway, now that I've said that, I like Cristina and Hunt together.I don't like L'il Grey and Sloane together, but I do like Sloane when he's being "bad." I loved when Lexie said, "Come on, am I that bad," and Sloane said, "No, I am." Sloane is definitely one of my favorite characters!
As far as the solo surgery, Cristina made the right choice. Meredith was so annoying in the staircase, talking about how she is obviously the best. Based on what?
I don't know how I feel about the whole Callie/Sadie story. I like Callie most of the time. (And I like her even more now that she's not with George.) But, I feel like she needs to be single for a bit.
I feel like the patient stories got lost in this episode; there was too much going on!
1As lame as it is to have Denny around ALL THE TIME now, I couldn't help but crack up every time he got annoyed at Alex being around. It was just too funny. But I still want to smack Izzie and yell at her to SNAP OUT OF IT.
Also, LOVE LOVE LOVE Cristina and Hunt. I don't know why but I'm such a huge fan of that couple-that-isn't-a-couple-yet.
Bad Sloan! No little Grey for you! BAD!
2i thought christina would give the surgery to dr dixon, since the chief told her to do make sure she stays at that hospital and she wanted to do it.. and then the whole point of te solo surgery would go to waste! haha and i would give sloan more credit.. he restrained till the tank came off lol. i liked this episode, totally made up for the last one! i think next weeks is a repeat, which is a total bummer!
3Dr dixon didnt want to do the solo. She was just excited about christina having to make that decision. Dixon has done hundreds of solos....and it wouldnt make sense that she would want it, its the rules that an intern gets it...
I really want Alex to walk in on Dizzy and Deady, while they are having sex and see her humping the air...and call down someone from psych.
4I'm so sick of Denny! So sick of him! Every time that he's on my TV I yell at him to go away. Out loud. That's how much it bugs me. I'm starting to think that Shonda Rhimes is the one with the brain problem because, really, who thought this was a good idea? Go away Denny!
Anyway, now that I got that off of my chest, I'm starting to sort of like McArmy. He still bugs me a little, 'cause he's so awkward, but he and Christina both got a little more human this week. Meredith, on the other hand, just gets more and more annoying.
I just have to go back to Denny for a sec. I'm so glad that George is starting to notice something's up, so that maybe they can unplug Izzie's brain and make Denny float up into the ether forever. Please, can someone make that happen?
Oh, and I would like to request another McSteamy towel scene, now that he's gettin' busy with Lexie.
5You know, pharm_chick, I initially thought the same thing about Dr. Dixon and the solo surgery. Glad I wasn't the only one. Also, they need to make her slightly less awkward around patients, because that was seriously painful to watch.
6For the fourth episode in a row, I basically have no words. But here are a few thoughts that I had:
-I want to get to the bottom of this Izzie/Denny thing.
-Also, Cristina and the vent? Uh, corn-tastic. (But I love the two of them together)
-Mere...Go AWAY!!!!!!!!! So annoying. You do not deserve EVERYTHING!
-Little Grey and Big Sloan?! So wrong.
7Apparently, pretty much everyone thinks that Shonda and Co. have lost their darn minds: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2008/12/greys-anatomy.html
8Dixon wanted to do the surgery because she hadnt done an amputation for a long time untill she realized it was the first solo surgery...
They are quickly ruining my 'Denny' why drag down what his character was?? Drives me nutso!!
Need more Georgie...
Poor Sloan, he really tried to stay away from lil grey
9Love Christina and Dr. Hunt their story is so great and I think he is going to be able to do what Burke could not- make her seem more human. I can see them really caring about each other even enough to finally beat Christina's ego. Speaking of which as much as I disagreed with Christina's outburst at Mer after the intern scandal broke I completely though this weeks outburst was appropriate. I also thought that they should have let her do the surgery in the end because she is a wicked awesome surgeon. I'm glad she picked Alex and it was pretty apparent that until Dr. Dixon's little make it scientific speech she was going to go with Meredith because she is her best friend. Meredith is so full of herself that it's sickening. Love Bailey, loved the vent scene and I love Sloane and Little Grey even if the relationship is so wrong. I don't think they are going to get into anything serious though because Sloane is having major anxiety about it already. Plus realistically he would be better with Callie.
10On a side note I really hope it's not Mc Dreamy getting canned because I love Dempsey and I just can't see him being a tool on set. he seems like anice normal guy and he's been in the business long enough to know not to burn his bridges
11I really need for the Denny subject line to be over. Soon
12I like Sloan with Lil Grey. I think they'll be good for each for each other. I like Christina with Hunt. I still love Merideth. But Denny is must be put to rest.
13i love that you share all this since i was on a plane last night and missed it. i get the whole episode w/o having to deal. well...i think that it's interesting how things are turning out for the hospital, but it's kind of hitting the lull for me this week since i didn't really feel upset that i missed it and i always do.
the blind item - that would make a bit of sense if it were mcdreamy - but who knows. it doesn't seem like he would be a diva based on what we see of him around town with his kids but things can be different at work right? i kind of wish it were alex instead - but that's just me.
14little grey and mark were incredibly hot, that's the only interesting storyline as far as i'm concerned..
i dont understand the fascination with Hunt, but maybe he'll grow on me
15Yeah..hopefully not Dempsey.. I know he had a serious attitude problem in the past that he admitted to.. esp way back when on the set of Mobsters(1991) (can you imagine working on THAT set with the 80's era fueled ego's of Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey and Richard Grecco?? Like Swimming With Sharks x3).
I really hope it is Heigle.. or however you spell her name. I am sick of her, of her character.. they can let her go.
16The Denny plot is just to stupid for me. He died. Let her get over it. I don't need to look at Jeffrey Dean Morgan anymore then I did on Supernatural. We squeezed it dry already. If Izzie is indeed going crazy can we please just let it happen already...
Mer and Derek are at a good place which is why no one is paying attention to that aspect anymore.
Christina needed a guy in her life.
Alex loves Izzie...wow never thought I'd see the day when alex was gushy...too bad it's over a crazy person
Lexie and Sloan...Why do I feel like maybe they might be more then just a f*^%k....
I liked the episode. Just please really kill Denny...
17Okay am I the only person who is super annoyed when Denny is referred to as her dead 'fiance'? I just hate that. I'm really started to get annoyed with Izzie. She was okay before but now blech.
I really don't fine McArmy hot at all but I kind of like him. Especially he and Christina. Although their kiss was kind of weird.
Sloan is super sexy as always! I don't mind he and Lexie together really but I don't think it's going to work out.
More George this week! I'm pretty sure he's not the one who might be kicked off.
On that note it might be McDreamy, he was in what like 1 scene? But I really can't see him being a drama queen?
18I really want Callie and Sloan to get together!
19I like Lexie and Sloan together. It's the whole she-makes-him-want-to-be-a-better-man thing. Wonder what happens with the Lexie-hearts-George storyline though. Has that been completely thrown out the window? Will George get jealous? At any rate, glad to see George is back somewhat.
Even more than how ridiculous Denny the Dead storyline is, I HATE how this is setting Alex up to be devastated. He's got the potential to be a great guy but after Rebecca I don't know how he's going to handle another girlfriend gone crazy (although Izzie's seems physiological whereas Rebecca's was mental).
20C-rated episode. A few good points mixed with a lot of meh. Just a lot of mediocre.
Hopefully Mary McDonnell's stint on Grey's will garner her the Emmy nod she's been denied every season of Battlestar.
***When is someone going to make a crack about how the Grey women sleep around with their coworkers? Lexie, you really are a Grey now. The thing with Mark- ugh. Not loving it. And can someone please recolor her hair? Lexie has purple hair.
21***Callie's blushing was cute!
***Horray for Alex getting some positive story-time. We haven't seen this since his time working with Addison.
***Izzie, just go away. Not only are you likely being written off, the writers are making your lines as painful as possible.
***The final moment with McArmy and Christina was corny, but cute!
Denny in the picture!! He is soo HOT...Lil Grey and Slone...hmmm not going to last.. And whats up with that cooku doctor...and i cried soo much when they pronounced the 16yr old brain dead. so sad!!!!
22"Hopefully Mary McDonnell's stint on Grey's will garner her the Emmy nod she's been denied every season of Battlestar."
Ugh I know! Although almost everyone on that show should get an emmy
Especially Kara
Thrace
23I thought Lexi was super in love with George? Fair weather slut!
24On another note, who else would love to see Izzie's craziness come to light in the fashion of a Britney breakdown? Have her leg tied to the gurney...oh I would love it- who's with me?
25I agree with one of the earlier comments. Dr. Dixon is absolutely PAINFUL to watch and I am really tired of the whole Denny being back from the dead/Izzie is losing her mind storyline. I am a true fan of Grey's but this is making me want to change the channel. I think Grey's may have officially jumped the shark.
26That last scene with Kanye Wests's "Streetlights" playing in the background was SO GOOD.
and I love lexie and McSteamy together!
27Great recap, Buzz! At times, I think that it's Shondra Rimes that has lost her mind; oh, how I wish the Denny/Izzie storyline would go away soon. I really like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but every time I see him on Grey's I just want to scream (in fact, I do). That George is noticing Izzie's behavior may be a good sign that Izzie's "condition" is about to be revealed and maybe then Denny can finally go away for good this time. McArmy and Christina are good together, but the vent scene is really strange. Callie and Bailey were great in their own unique ways last night. I'm starting to think that it is McDreamy who may be leaving the show; his time has been limited and his significance has been reduced both personally and professionally. I love his relationship with Sloan, so I'll miss that the most if he does leave.
28I haven't watched it yet so I really shouldn't comment, BUT seriously?? They are still going on with Denny/Izzie?? Now I don't even want to bother!
29Okay as much as I understand why people are all 'OMG' about some of this stuff, it is a television show, it isn't real and it's all about entertainment.
30The storyline with the sister struck too close to home for me. I haven't lost any of my sisters, but they mean the world to me and even though we fight, I couldn't live with myself if I hurt one of them (like in a car accident, etc.)
I don't like Virginia Dixon at all. I know she has Asperger's, but she seems very cold.
31I like Lexie & Mark Sloan as a couple.
The Izzie/Denny storyline is driving me crazy.
The scene at the end with Cristina and Owen Hunt was so sweet.
32I agree that the vent was corny, but I LOVED it. I couldn't stop smiling. Sometimes you need some corniness when you've had a bad day.
33shonda has gone CRAZY
i'm almost positive izzie has an arteriovenous malformation. they can cause hallucinations and are very similar to aneurysms
(i work in neurosurgery research and asked around after yesterday's post)
34http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arteriovenous_malformation
the ending was good
i just hope they quit the ezzie dead guy relation ship its so sick
and th gay kally ....whats up with that !!
35Izzie's HALLUCINATIONS HAVE TO STOP !!!!! She needs to MOVE ON.
Yang deserves to fall in love again !!!! Good for her and Dr Hunt. I felt horrible for her after she was ALMOST MARRIED !!!!
Bad Sloan !!!! Lexie's a sweetheart.
36THANK YOU George for finally figuring out izzies wack in the head
37I loved Denny when you know, he was real ... but this whole Denny/ghost/best sex ever storyline is absolutely ridiculous, and Alex's speech really broke my heart. I hope Izzie gets her head out of her ass soon.
38It is starting to look more and more like it's going to be Derek who gets the ax. That line when he and Mer are looking at the board and he says "I'm getting sick of all the death"... sounds like he's about ready to give up
39I have watched Grey's ever since the first episode, but if McDreamy leaves I will stop watching the show.
40I really don't like the new Dr. they are bringing in. I don't care how good of a surgeon she is, I would not want her to operate on any of my family members - I just don't understand...
I really don't care if I miss the show anymore either - just isn't grabbing me the way it used to. Which is a shame because there isn't much more to pick from on TV!
41WAIT.. is that doctor above in that picture Molly Hagan? Where the hell has she been since the 80's? HA! She was the rich b*tch friend Shayne in Some Kind of Wonderful!! I love the casting people for this show..Heigl from My Father the Hero (94), Patrick Dempsey (80'sand 90's), Brooke (Silence of the Lambs '91) and now Hagan from SKoW('87)? LOL!! this show is an 80's and 90's flash back!
Is that her?
42I am loving Cristina/Owen, the vent scene is one of the corniest scenes on Grey's ever.....but also one of my faves!!!
I love Cristina, she is the only character right now that I actually care about.
I loved Denny loads & loads & loads, etc, but he needs to be laid to rest again 'cos this whole thing is ruining everything Denny/Izzie were for me!!!
Anyway......Cristina/Owen FTW!!!
43I was completely horrified by this episodes portrayal of transplantation. After working in the field for years and seeing men, woman, and children die waiting for organs, the last thing the field needed was a show irresponsibly feeding inaccuracies to the public. I wondered if anyone else felt this way??
To clarify, family knowledge of a loved one's state of brain death would never occur simultaneously with a request for donation. Brain death notes happen over the course of hrs, if not days of following a patient. There is rarely reason for hast. A donor patient can be kept stable for days to allow the family to come to terms. Also, there is a division between recovering transplant surgeons and treating physicians so as to protect the interests of the patient. Finally, the word HARVEST, is a ancient word that is basically the equivalent of a curse word in transplantation. It is considered insensitive to the gift of organs and NEVER used. Families decision to donate is always treated as a conversation which involves treating physicians, social work, grief counselors, and organ bank staff.
441. i love yang and hunt...he makes her more human and less hardcore surgeon robot.
452. where the heck has george been all season? thank god he's finally noticing how weird izzie has been, but why doesn't he talk to her about it?? and why was alex so hostile towards him?
3. yay alex in love and getting the surgery. he really hasn't had a chance to shine since he was working w/ addison.
4. izzie/denny-gag!
5. meredith is still whiny as ever.
6. mark and lexy....interesting. but i still like him w/ addison best.
Sloan has easily become my favourite character.
Love that Hunt finally kissed Cristina without looking like he was trying to eat her face.
Denny has GOT to go. I hate to admit I laughed out loud when he screamed at Alex that first time, but regardless I'm growing very tired of his presence and Izzie's craziness.
And finally, love Sloan
46Love Lexie and Sloan. I can see them filling the shoes of Mer and Der since they are the happy stable couple now. The vent scene was not corny. I think Yang and Hunt are awesome together as well.
47The Denny storyline may make me stop watching the show. It is so ridiculous and unnecessary. Izzie and Alex is interesting, but they have sidelined that relationship to focus on the ghost. McArmy and Christina are great and complicated - why not focus on Christina becoming more human?
48Stop the madness. They're overdoing a good thing in Denny with this ridiculous storyline. I still love McArmy though! Lexie and Sloan are growing on me.
