On this episode of Pushing Daisies, Chuck stirs up all kinds of trouble in the graveyard, doing the one thing that Ned probably wishes she wouldn't. But Ned doesn't know about it till the very end, because he spends most of the time baking pies and fighting crime with Olive at the annual comfort food cook-off, complete with silly hats. This episode has intrigue, romance, jealousy, and singing, and if you're ready to talk about it, you should read more.
So, Charles Charles is alive and well-ish, about as well as you can be if you've been buried underground for 20 years. Chuck had her 30 seconds with her dad all planned out, but when push comes to shove, she can't let him go again and devises a devious plan on the spot: If Charles wears a glove, Ned's touch won't work, and he can just play dead until Chuck comes back to dig him out. Great, except: 1) Now there's a dead man who actually looks dead wandering around because of Ned's powers, 2) Someone else had to die to keep Charles alive, and 3) Ned doesn't know about any of this.
Point No. 2 ends up not being such a big deal, though, because the victim of the "alive-againing" is Dwight Dixon, who was waiting in the graveyard to shoot Chuck. He could have killed the whole gang had his surprise not lasted 61 seconds, so to see him go down isn't exactly a shame — but he does give voice to Chuck's guilty conscience, saying that even if she did the right thing, she should have told Ned by now. Add that to Lily once again turning up dangerously close to Chuck's whereabouts, and that was definitely the plot holding my attention for most of the night.
With all of that going on, it was a bit hard to focus on Ned and Olive's plot at the comfort food cookoff — though it was fun to watch the two of them try to solve a case alone. Ned manages to wake up the victim without Olive finding out about his powers, follows clues to nab the murderer, and even wins a blue ribbon at the end, thanks to Olive's plan B of stashing a pie in the fridge. Through it all, Olive's realizing just what a big crush she still has on Ned, so when he reaches for her hand at the end, it's bittersweet — and it's enough to drive Olive back to the Pie Hole kitchen to sing a little "Eternal Flame" while Ned breaks her heart (again) by leaving her with cleanup duties while he searches for Chuck.
Some other thoughts:
- The best part of the comfort food cookoff: the crazy costumes! Ned and Olive's pie hats were great, but my favorite was the ice cream cones. Close second may be the Waffle Nazi: "I do not speak a word of German. I speak English with a German accent. Pageantry!"
- The Pie Hole's blue ribbon is nearly Olive-sized.
- Did anyone else get confused when Dwight started talking to Chuck? In a show with so many dead people talking, it might be nice if the ones who were staying dead could stay quiet too!
- I'm always so happy to see Beth Grant. Her characters are so wonderfully twisted ("Don't make me whip up another batch of beat-down"), and she makes me remember Sparkle Motion.
- Ha, Emerson: "'Less alive'? Nice euphemism, killer."
So, Ned's discovered the still-living Charles Charles, who's set up in the house across from the aunts. How much longer will Chuck's alive-ness remain a secret? And can we get a love interest for Olive so she pines for Ned less (and maybe sings more)?

I love this show. I really hope they pick it up for a third season. Did anyone notice that the character of Marianne Marie Beetle was also in Wonderfalls?
1I absolutely loved this episode. I'm so sad that this show is ending. I watched it out of curiosity a couple of episodes in and was absolutely hooked by Jim Dale's voice and the gorgeous set designs instantly. Then of course I fell completely in love with the amazing cast, especially Kristen Chenowith and Ellen Green. I love how sweet it is and how funny. The musical numbers actually work (as opposed to other shows that have tried it) because you have actual musical theater performers doing them. In this depressing time it was such a nice escape to go into this frothy sugary pie-making world and I will miss it dearly.
2What a great episode. I loved the costumes at the Comfort Food Cook-off.
Any episode that features Kristin Chenoweth singing because doubly pleasureful. Gosh, I'm really going to miss this show as the inevitable countdown comes
.
3yes, indeedclarity, i remember muffin buffalo!
4gosh, this show is just getting better and better! it's a shame...
buzz, i thought dwight dixon was at the cemetery to kill chuck not aunt lily.
5juiceejuice — oh, that's interesting. Maybe I'm wrong! I thought that he was following Lily's note that she had the pocketwatch and if he wanted it, he should come meet her in the cemetery.
6i thought he never got lily's note. and he went to the graveyard, thinking chuck stole the watch back and was going to bury it with her dad. but i wasn't really paying attention, so i could be wrong.
7I don't remember the exact quote but Ned's "I know things are weird after I did "it" with your Dad" line was one of the best of the night. It's such a shame that we don't have much of the show left. It's so sad that people rather settle for the mediocre and dreary than a great show like this. This is why television will always be my least favorite form of entertainment. They really do need to do that Pushing Daisies movie that was mentioned.
8Must have missed this one, will see in re-runs.
9I heard Daisies was canceled, hope I'm wrong
Juiceejuice - I believe you're right... Dwight went to the graveyard to kill Chuck thinking she had the pocket watch.
And Buzz - I totally agree. Olive needs more songs and her own love interest. I'm not a big fan of love triangles as they always seem like a cheap way to enhance a story line.
10Oh and one more thing - I LOVE this show!!! I truly hope they pick it up for another season. :-\
11About Olive, I can't say who but she was supposed to end up with her own love interest. I don't know whether they get to it in the remaining episodes but I would have liked to have her end up with Alfredo if he had stuck around.
121. I laughed out loud when Olive said "Oh I just got a tingly feeling, and not just in my nether regends". Olive was on fire this ep..and I loved the singing!
132. The narrator said Dwight went to the cemetery to follow Chuck. Before he explained that I too thought he was going to kill Lily, but somehow he followed Chuck there.
3. This episode was GREAT!
I thought Olive's love interest was supposed to be the itinerant cappuccino machine repair man.
14Great recap of a great episode. Loved the "emotional snowday" line. So wishing that Ned could bring this show back to network life after this season ends.
15Ineedclarity The Muffin Buffaloe lady was so distracting throughout the episode. I just kept getting giddy at the nod to Wonderfalls. The whole Ned and Olive plot was so much more intersting to me than the whole Chuck and her Dad thing although Emerson's less dead comment was hilarious. I so wish Ned and Olive would end up together although that may just be because I love Kristen Chenowith so much. It was such a bonus to hear her sing Eternal Flame. And when Ned grabbed her hand when they won awww it broke my heart. But seriously this can't be the end of the Dwight Dixon business because something is up with that guy and I think someone is going to end up coming out of the wood work to find out what happened to him
16I can't believe they canceled. It's such an awesome show. Ugh. Anywho, I read somewhere that they might have DC Comics make a comic strip to tie up all the loose ends and there is a movie in the works? That can't be possible, can it?
17I have heard that. I have also heard that fans are trying to reach out to TBS to maybe pick up the show. I don't know how that would work, seeing as Pushing Daisies is apparently one of the more expensive shows to produce. But man, that would totally make me love TBS if they could do that
.
18Anyone else seriously bugged by Chuck's lower eyelashes? Lay off the mascara there, makeup artist. It looks wonky!
19Huh, I haven't heard anything official about a movie, but Bryan Fuller has said he'd like to continue the storylines in a comic. Here's the story.
20I laughed so much with this epsiode. The costumes were great. I also liked that Olive got more screen time since I think that Kristin is adorable and her voice sounds like an angel. Olive and Ned work well together, "find the saboteur, find the killer," a little better than Ned works with Chuck, who can be too perky sometimes. The plot about Dwight and his connection to Chuck's father is very interesting and so is the connection to Lily who is trying desperately to keep secrets hidden, as is her daughter, the supposedly-dead Chuck! I have watched the show since the beginning and I will miss it terribly. The show is very unqiue compared to anything else on TV. The quality is wonderful and I hope that Bryan Fuller will succeed in making the show into a movie. Everyone should watch this show, even if it will get cancelled! It makes you remember how magic and romance and mystery can make a wonderful story.
21Thanks for the link, Buzz.
Can I just say how disappointed I was that Eli, DSM, and Pushing Daisies were canceled? I have especially enjoyed Eli Stone & Pushing Daisies consistently as they are some of the few shows that have grabbed me with their artistic sets and imaginative story lines. Such a bummer! I don't want to settle for any of the other shows that are on during the same time slots.
I did not think Beth Grant was particularly wonderful in this episode. She just kind of stumbled through her lines without much genuine delivery.
22amybdk,
I'm right there with you in being so disappointed in the looming lose of Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone. All of them of such GREAT programs. I can't even sit through Private Practice anymore, knowing that that program was given a full second season and not the two better shows that it's sandwiched between.
23Another wonderful episode. This show is fantastic!
24tiabia,
I KNOW! Private Practice has been my guilty pleasure (sort of like Gossip Girl). Something that's not that wonderful but is sort of fun to watch. It is by no means better than any of the others you mentioned!
Those ABC a-holes!
25I have read that Fuller is trying to shop the show as a movie, so that would be AWESOME. I will be very sad in a few weeks when the show is gone. Emerson's one-liners, Chuck's sunny outlook, Olive's singing and Ned's...well everything. *sigh*
26I adore pushing daisies, i just can't believe abc cancelled it. yes, cancelled. i know it dosen't pull in huge numbers but it holds its own. maybe hbo will take it on and really give it the press it deserves. a movie would be amazing, but i think pushing daisies is best served as a tv show. know what i mean?
if your a fan go here: http://pushingdaisies-tv.com/ to see what you can do to bring it back!
o and i picked up on the muffin buffalo from "wonderfalls"
27ya dwight was there to kill chuck he never got lilys note.
28I love this show and am so sad that it got cancelled. There were some great one liners and the cast was just great.
29Buzz he stated both a comic and possibly a movie! Great episode.
30I have never been this attached to a show that was on the chopping block before... I think I may actually shed a tear when Pushing Daisies ends. I have done my part though. I've signed petitions and I've written to ABC about it. If you want to try and save the show, you all should write in too
31Awesome episode. Olive for the win!
32Love this show SO MUCH! So when I heard it was CANCELED... Or has that been some kind of error? Apparently, Eli Stone is dunzo too.
33BTW, Kristin Chenoweth will be on Martha Stewart today, if you gals can set your DVRs. She will be talking about her new movie 'Four Christmases,' which loos pretty funny. I am very sad that the show is coming to an end so soon. The stories are more intriguing than ever and I look forward to Wednesday nights. What else was showing better eratings? A sports car that talked on NBC?? I was waiting for thePushing Daisies to come back after the shorter-season last year. Hopefully I will get the DVD for Christmas. I have dropped many hints!
34What ABC probably should have done was rerun PD, DSM, and ES during the strike-extended summer months. I'm pretty sure they would have picked up viewers.
35Love this show, loved the episode. Wish have more of Kristin Chenoweth's singing!
36I need this show to stay alive... there is nothing on TV like it.
Thanks for the link heymary. I have already written letters to NBC, TBS, ABC (begging them to reconsider), and a couple other networks.
37This was such a great episode!! I really might shed a tear when my dear Pushing Daisies is gone. Maybe some webisodes, at least?
38It really is being cancelled?! I give up! \(--)/ What is it with ABC axing great shows?! Ugh!
39I'm so bummed that this show is being cancelled...I love it. I'm going to miss seeing Lee Pace on my TV every week
That stupid writers' strike screwed up so many shows. It's part of the reason why Olive's love interest, Alfredo, and the sewer guy Oscar Vibenius (played by Paul Reubens) haven't returned yet. They kinda just dropped those storylines.
