The first promos for American Idol season eight have started to air, and it appears Fox is taking two pretty different tactics when it comes to marketing this season.
One promo features the most recent winner, David Cook, flashing back through his Idol journey, which seems to fit with the network's plan to make the show more emotional this year. The other features . . . a girl in a bikini.
Check out the two promos and let me know: Do you think Idol should play up the emotional strategy or the sexy strategy in selling this eighth season? Or should the producers try something else entirely?

I chose 'wait is this show still on' even though I know it's on, I can't understand why. I've never watched more than a few minutes of it because it's awful.
1I would go with the emotional approach, although I have pretty much severed by ties with American Idol.
With American Idol being such a "behemoth" of a show, I think a lot of networks expect their shows to pull the kinds of numbers that this one does, and therefore good shows get cut. American Idol has created an almost unattainable goal for original television
. Ok, I'm done ranting.
2I really dislike AI, yet I always end up watching the final few shows, maybe because of the emotional tug at the end. Guess that's why I like the "Dreams Begin Again" approach of the first promo.
3I only watch AI for the auditions at the beginning of each season. It seems to me, though, that the emotional aspect is what keeps people watching more than any sex appeal the show's contestants might have.
4I second amloveaffair completely. Make it go away!
5I don't think they were going for "Sexy", they were going for "funny".
6I've never liked the show, but what most people seem to enjoy are the bad performances and bad auditions. So, focus on the "funny" just like always. Don't all of the seasons at least start out strong?
How about we just have a show about David Cook?
7I voted "Wait, this show is still on?"
8I've never watched American Idol nor Latinamerican Idol.
But I loved the parody they did in Psych about this show.
David Cook is an awful singer.
9I thought that they were equal. The first one was creative, but cheesy, and the second one was kinda funny but the sexy thing is overplayed. I really hope next season is better than the last one because I was bored to tears in the beginning.
10i liked the commercial with David Cook on it, he's an amazing singer [contrary to what SOME might think]...the new contestants are gonna have a hard time following up on my beloved DC.
11ok - jokingly i chose 'wait this show is still on'? i hate to say it but amid everything they try - i'm still bored. i watched more of it this past season than ever, but that's also partly because there was NOTHING else on tv at all!
12Coincidentally, the David Cook commercial came on Fox just as I started writing this! Being just slightly biased, I would rather see David's commercial (or as Allyace said, how about a show about David only?)
