Upon taking a listen to Fergie's cover of Heart's "Barracuda" for Shrek the Third (which opens this Friday, May 18, by the way), I'm a little perplexed. Fergie definitely rocks out, but the song sounds completely the same as the original "Barracuda," so I wonder why they didn't just use that one? You can hear both versions of the song to compare for yourself, so read more
Here's Fergie's version for Shrek the Third:
Here's the original, by Heart:
Side note: Might I point out the startling physical similarities, too, between Fergie and Shrek? Okay, I'm done.

aw, i'm sad it sounds the same. i'm disappointed like an idol judge.
1Hm, should be interesting (I can't play it at work). I typically don't care for covers but if anyone can pull off a Heart song, it is probably Fergie.
2Huh.
Old-school Heart is one of my guiltiest pleasures
, so I was VERY reluctant to hear this. But
you're right, Buzz. This sounds EXACTLY like the original. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was just an alternate take, with Ann Wilson singing as usual.
I have to say, Fergie rocks out pretty awesomely here, and I dig it. I'm impressed. Then again, when I was at my little cousin's bar mitzvah last week and the DJ played "Fergalicious" and "Glamorous" back to back, I realized that I kind of like both of those songs, in the same cheesy way that I kind of like the Spice Girls. Then again, I was pretty drunk on margaritas.
Can't believe I just admitted that!
3I'm with you, WhiplashGirlchild! Heart is definitely one of my guilty pleasures and I love them! They should have just used the original...
4Thumbs up for Fergie. Different? No, but well done!
5This just pisses me off. First no pictures of Heart at the Rock Awards, and now they use a cover by Fergie?!
6What is wrong with using the originals? Geesh.
I never see the point in doing a cover if you're just going to do it exactly the same. Nevertheless, it ain't bad, definitely got me dancing.
7Heart would totally be included in my soundtrack of life from growing up in the 70s. Love them!
8Wow, it does sound just like the original. Props to Fergie for hitting those insane high notes, but as a fellow Heart fan I wish they had just used the original. Or, perhaps done a duet?
9Wow.I love me some heart, and am so-so on Fergie, but I am truley impressed by this. She sounds awesome. with all the cheap music she does, it's easy to forget that she actually does have a great voice. I don't mind that it sounds the same. That way, when I'm singing along I'm still on cue haha!
10Oh my goodness, Fergie is actually singing?!! What?!
11Wow, she should do more stylized songs like this. Her voice is actually a little less annoying when she's rocking out.
12it sounds exactly the same as the original but i don't think i have ever heard her voice sounds this good!
13omg. fergie didnt spell in a song?! :0
wow. lol!
14i still like hearts better, but she didnt do bad
Her name sells the song...we are, (in my opinion), moving into a culture where we have lost all of our musical roots...the young kids today have no idea who Heart is. The musical industry has to appeal to the younger ones now....they have no idea. It's sad really, all the great musicians were "back in the day". I love my mom's music, (Joplin, Hendrix, CCR). But, in retrospect, Fergie did a very good job...
15Fergie's version is edgier, and it works... I think she should be using this voice way more often... then again I also think she's got a face made for radio and her work with the BEP's is something she should be proud of.
16haha, almost the same indeed.
17I love it! I just rediscovered my Heart's Greatest Hits CD the other day (hee hee embarrassing) and so this is perfect timing. Sidenote, I actually saw Ann Wilson perform in the Vagina Monologues here in Seattle. Second sidenote, I am putting together a "Working Girl's Monday Morning Mix" and this is totally going on it~thanks Buzz! One last thing, feel like I can finally understand the lyrics now in the Fergie version.
18Ok, I might be biased because I am a Heart fan, but..... Um,Fergie? Just because you can hit the notes, doesn't mean you should. WOW,that sucked. Besides the fact that it was a poor-man's version of the perfect original, the orgasmic like sounds were disturbing. Oh, the guitar riffs? Sounded like a car motor. My God, was that craptastic. Somewhere Ann Wilson (for that matter, Nancy too) is having heart failure.
19I guess Heart fans can just be happy they didn't get JT to cover it.
