The book publisher Random House recently announced that it will be releasing thousands more of its books in digital format over the next few months. The idea is that while the market for regular ol' words-on-paper books is struggling, electronic books have grown by leaps and bounds over the past year, thanks to Amazon's Kindle (Oprah's favorite gadget), among other things.
Still, the overall number of people buying electronic books is still estimated to be pretty small — which got me wondering how you're reading books these days. Have any of you jumped on the e-book bandwagon? Do you download or rent audiobooks? Or are you content with paper?

The old way.
1Good old paper for me.
2Digital and regular books.
3At home I read the paper regular ones but if I'm going on a trip or just to read on the bus it's easier to take the digital ones.
Good old paper for me, though these days it's all textbooks. I'm saving up for a Kindle sometime in the future, that would be so convenient for travel. My MIL has one and adores it.
4I was told a decade ago that we would all be using digital by now, but I can seem to let go of my paper books. Besides who really wants to look at a screen all the time.
5Paper. I HATE audiobooks. I can't stand anyone's voice but my own lol. I like the idea of ebooks, but I can't get used to them. Although I've never tried the Kindle which is supposed to be easier on the eyes and such.
6I like the feel of paper between my hands. And the smell of new books. And the way they look, all lined up and piled up in my office!
And since I fall asleep reading every night, and drop the book to the floor, it's better if it's not made of electronic parts!
7I don't like disembodied speaking voices, so I'm not an audiobook fan, although I'm sometimes subjected to listening to someone else's in the car!
If I can get my hands on a real book, as in a paper book, I will! There's no replacement for holding one, turning pages, really bonding with it. Especially since I read a lot in bed, and for hours straight.
8I read enough online text online as it is, never mind whole books!
However, I WILL download a classic book as a PDF file to enjoy slowly, when those are available. But PDF format books are the only ones I like. They are pretty neat.
If I had a choice I'd only read paper books, but some of the readings for my classes are extremely long so I'll read them on my computer instead of wasting paper printing them out
9I've got a huge collection of audiobooks that I'm listening to slowly on the way home from work...it's a long drive and after getting out at 3am, music just doesn't work.
It's how I discovered the Twilight Series:)
10I love REAL books. Unless I'm cleaning or driving long distances....then I listen to the Harry Potter books on tape. Jim Dale does the voices and he's amazing. He's the same actor that does the narration in Pushing Daisies. awwww Pushing Daisies.
11I agree with JaeB. There is nothing like turning pages!
Besides, print is probably easier on the eyes.
12The paper feeling has the e-books one pretty much beat. I don't mind reading stuff for class on screen, but when I'm reading for enjoyment, I want to cuddle up with a book - and the e-readers don't quite seem… cuddly…
13PAPER! por favor
14Paper, for sure! I hate those e-books - just doesn't have the same effect.
15there's nothing like curling up and reading a good PAPER book
16i'd hate to lose that
Nothing beats saving a paper book in hand, but I will sometimes download an audiobook to listen to for long car trips
17I can't wait for the Kindle to be available in Canada ... I am a book addicted girl, and the cheaper prices on Kindle books appeal to me but I am not sure I can deal with the non-tactual sensation of reading my book on a device.
18the healthy, tradition, right way - paper
i love my eyes, so no digital, i have a
visual memory and coprehension, so no audio, and i likethe feel of a book in my hands.
19Agreed with pretty much everyone here.
Nothing like a real book. The only things I
read online are fanfictions (occasionally) because, obviously, they aren't available in print.
20i just love real books. I love when you get a new one and crack it open for the first time. Oh I love reading!
21Paper. I never could get into audio books, and I just love the feel, smell, etc. of a good old fashioned paper paged book in my hands. It's the romantic in me, I'm sure. It just evokes good feelings to sit curled up with my nose in a book.
22My mother has a Kindle and it does give you a book feel and she loves it. She reads so much that it makes a lot of sense for her and if I could afford it, I would probably love it, but I would still need to feel the weight of a book from time to time. I love Harry Potter audiobooks!!!
23The best thing about books is that when you're done, you can pass them along to others, trade them in at a used bookstore, or donate them when you're done reading them. Digital formats can't be passed on without limitations on rights, and it's not the same as giving someone a copy you've already worn through.
And I may be crazy, but I love the smell of old books. Used books are the best!
24I'm getting a Kindle for Christmas from my husband. I couldn't be more excited! I hate paper books--too much clutter. Wasteful! And I'm sorry, but everyone who wants to "cuddle" or "bond" with paper books sounds like they're totally affected. It's a book. It's not the second coming.
25Paper books, of course. I love the way they feel and smell, I just love holding it in my hands. The only audiobook I own is Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (and So Can You!)" and it was loaned to me by a friend.
26I have bought more books - and checked out more library books - in the last couple years than in the previous decade combined. I hope real books never go anywhere. The tactile satisfaction of turning a page, bending a spine, smelling the paper - that can't be duplicated.
Audio books are nifty for long car trips though, I must admit.
27I like my books the old-fashioned way.
28i'm still an 'old fashioned' paper book reader, but i have to say that i did subscribe to eReader at the airport this past weekend to get the book that i wanted to read on the plane
since none of the bookstores in the airport had a copy.
29just can't let go of the paper books-would like to have a kindle for convienance if i don't have time to get to the store and buy one and just because it's fast, but it is too pricey. plus i can get used books in good condition for much cheaper than downloading them. i love the way a good book feels!
30For me, nothing beats holding the actual book in my hands. I get distracted while listening to audiobooks and I don't like reading large amounts of text on screens.
31I read regular and listen to Audio. No digital yet, but i dont think i will because there is nothing like the ruffle of pages, the smell of books, that makes me happy
32I'm usually reading 3 books at any given time. I have the paper one I'm reading, the one on CD I listen to in my car during my drive to work, and the one that I listen to while I'm doing housework.
Right now I'm reading New Moon (bk 2 twilight series), listening to Lucky Man (Michael J Fox biography) in my car and listening to The Tommyknockers while I do housework.
33There is nothing like turning pages and feeling paper in your hands. I read books the "old-fashioned" way.
34I got the Kindle about a month ago. I had the same reservations most people do - I liked the feel of a book in my hands, flipping pages, the smell, etc. However, the Kindle is amazing and I don't miss real books at all. No clutter, no dead trees, cheaper books...awesome.
It was the thing that I was most thankful for at Thanksgiving dinner.
35I can't imagine staring at a screen any more than I have to. I'm on a computer all day for work and a little bit each night to check news, bank statements, get recipes, etc. I understand the Kindle is more environment-friendly but I can't see myself ever replacing my books with yet another plastic, digital device unless I start traveling more. Plus, at $349, the Kindle is a little out of my budget right now...
36I will always prefer to turn a page rather than scroll down when it comes to reading. But, if anything, I would love it if every book came with a link and access code or something that would allow me to access the text online. I've learned from using e-textbooks that the "Find" feature is something physical books are in want of.
Aside from that, I love turning a page, smelling brand new pages, getting paper shavings on my lap, buying things I really don't want so I can make a bookmark out of a receipt, I love the typeface and art that you can only get from Folio Society editions, books are one thing that I won't ever let go of, no matter how "convenient" computers can make reading!
Not big on audio books since they force prose into the confines of a human voice. While they can be read to sound exquisite, many works can lose much of its rhetorical complexity when translated to voice.
37Paper. I love the feel, the fonts, the smell of real books, and feeling like you're actually making your way through the book when you see all the pages you've read or still have to read. You can't beat that.
38I would rather have dead trees then something that is not biodegradable like plastic. You can recycle paper.
39Paper books definitely. I imagine reading a novel on screen would hurt your eyes. And yeah, just the feel of books is so much better. I agree with Phil though - it would be awesome if texts (the classics anyway) were available online just so I could use the "Find" feature!
