The Shield, the show that opened the door for so many of today's great basic cable TV series (Damages, Mad Men, and The Closer, to name just a few), will come to an end tonight. The Vic Mackey era closes with this 88th and final episode, "Family Meeting."
The episode is being described as "brilliant," and a few writers have already called it their favorite drama series finale ever. That's a pretty big statement, especially because several other series have set the bar so high. My favorite is still the sob-inducing finale of Six Feet Under, but this Spring's finale of The Wire is up there as well, and on a sentimental note, the bittersweet finale of Gilmore Girls will always get to me.
What about you? Which series finales are on your list of the best?

I remember back in the day I cried like a baby when Third Watch finished.
Friends too was pretty emotional.
1Six Feet Under definitely!
2Six Feet Under, without a doubt.
3Dawson's Creek! I was dying to find out if she picked Dawson or Pacey!!
4even though it was pretty infurating how it just ended, the sopranos finale was good t.v. but SFU takes the cake!!
5I thought Dawson's Creek had the most perfect ending ever. I couldn't have asked for anything better.
6I thought the ending to Charmed was perfect and wrapped everything up well. I was composed until it got to the last couple seconds, where they scrolled over the "family pictures" in the Manor and I realized that it was truly over.
The Friends finale was depressing because I didn't want it to be over, but I felt that it was pretty uneventful. Of course, Ross and Rachel were going to get back together! I just wanted something a little more...
The Gilmore Girls finale was great, I cried at several points throughout but I think Lorelai/Luke fans were upset that they didn't get a "proper ending." Thankfully, I'm not one of those people but I know some people were mad that all Lorelai and Luke did was have a kiss towards the end.
7Six Feet Under has the best show finale ever! I cried like no other. (plus an aunt of mine was also diagnosed with brain cancer the same summer).
8Also Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Buffy better than Angel. I like how both went out with a fight.
Six Feet Under, hands down.
9The Sopranos was irritating as all get out, but definitely a good finale, even though I still want to know what happened. I also thought Sex and the City was a good finale, although I guess it's not so final anymore with the movie having come out.
Possibly the most infuriating finale to me was Dead Like Me, because there basically was no finale. The series just ended, and it's totally bugged me ever since!
10I LOVED the ending to Dawson's!
11Definately Six Feet Under, I still have trouble not crying when I hear the song that was playing over the last few minutes of the show.
12Buffy and Angel had great finales too.
freaks and geek left me satisfied, even though it ended after only one season
13Buffy all the way. And Angel too. Very Joss.
14NYPD Blue. While I wasn't a fan of the show, I thought the way it ended with a long shot of the squad room and it basically being just another day on the job was an excellent ending.
15Avatar was amazing. 2 whole hours. It was epic. I laughed, I cried, it was amazing.
Also, Boy Meets World. That episode was amazing, and by the very end I was bawling.
16Buffy and Angel were great. It were perfect endings for the shows.
17The romantic in me liked although the final of OC and Alias.
Ryan looking at his younger self was a great idea and Summer and Seth together- awesome.
Sloan buried alive was so great and Sidney and Vaughn finally together.
OBVIOUSLY Six Feet Under. The only way you could disagree with that is if you haven't even seen the series. =)
18It was perfect, the music was perfect, it just suited the theme of the show. Most beautiful 9 minutes in TV history!!
Six Feet Under – no doubt
Also:
19Life on Mars (UK version – you guys HAVE to watch it)
Third Watch
The Sopranos
The Office – UK
The Wire!!!
Arrested Development
Yeah, Buffy had a pretty awesome finale, but it didn't quite make up for a crapfest of a 7th season.
20Definitely Six Feet Under.
21I totally forgot about Alias, but the bit with Sydney's dad totally made me tear up. I loved his character!
22It's a tie for me between Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Six Feet Under and the original 90210.
All three had perfect wrappers on them, resolved the "unanswered questions" that had been around for the entire series run, and ALL THREE made me cry uncontrollably. LOL
23I loved the way Angel ended, had a big emotional boo-hoo when Buffy did, and watched The Shield last night. I think The Shield's finale was incredibly well-written, and although I initially wanted certain questions answered (does Lloyd get caught? What happens to Danny?) I think the important ones were. Solid writing, Emmy-worthy acting, and Mackey getting what he deserves made it a fitting cap to an excellent show.
24Felicity's series finale was probably my favorite. It was bittersweet that she ended up with Ben, because I was rooting for Noel. However, the finale kept me glued to the screen. It was fabulous. I miss that show.
25I also loved the series finales of The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls. I was very disappointed with the series finale of Everybody Loves Raymond. It was awful!
26Buffy, Angel, and Charmed all wrapped their series up nicely. I agree Dead Like Me just ended... I actually liked that show!
I'm curious to see how they end ER this year. I've watched that off and on for years... more on when the original cast was there though.
27If you consider "Serenity" to be the finale to "Firefly", then it was a fantastic ending. "The West Wing" had a very graceful ending, and "Six Feet Under" was freakin' epic. "Wonderfalls" wrapped up well considering its unfortunate cancellation.
28what? ar you kidding? i watched over 130 series now, i can't remember any ending except for Friends and Sex and The City as I wantched it 20 times, and Veronica MArs which i watched 6 times...
29Six Feet Under!!!
