When a book has a large, passionate fan base, adapting it to film can be a tricky task. Certain scenes are usually cut from the book, making it nearly impossible to please everyone.

Twilight has been an interesting case. Fans have been ringing in across the Web (including here) now that the movie has hit theaters. It seems like some people who weren't that into the book actually thought the movie was pretty good, though of course there are plenty of fans of the book who were disappointed with the film version.
So tell me: Which did you prefer?

A Book most def!, it's gives you freedom to imagine things how you would like to see them rather then be forced to see it their way in a movie.
1Movies NEVER live up to the books. I've seen many movies and read the books (Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Along came a spider, Misery) and while they all may be GOOD movies, they are just not up to the level of the original books.
2The Harry Potter movies are awful compared to the books. Actually, they're just awful in generally.
Twilight as a book is way better as well.
The same goes for anything Nicholas Sparks wrote, the movies are always way better.
3The story of the book is good but the writing is terrible and only gets worse over the course of the series. The movie is enjoyable. I look forward to the next one and hope the screenwriter can approve upon what she has been given.
4Book!!--movie leaves out all the stuff that makes you understand how they really fall for each other!
5The movie--that way, you don't have to hear the tiring, incessant gushing of Bella about Edward and it makes her a much more sympathetic, likable character.
6Having seen the movie and being utterely amazed at how awful it was, I can only hope the book is better. But I can safely say that I now have NO interest in reading it or anything else by Ms. Meyer at all.
7freakshow.... i don't understand you. you say the movie was awful & you dont even want to read the book...yet your icon is edward/rob.... just saying
but also, i thought the book was ultimately great, but the movie did the best they could w/ the budget. i think over time it will only get better w/ each film
8mademoiselle, he is in other films, you know.
9The only movie I ever thought was better than the book was Into the Wild. But even then I loved the book too - the movie wasn't actually "better" - more like a very complimentary companion to the book.
For Twilight, I prefer the book, although I agree that Meyer's writing is sub-par. For me, Twilight is just guilty pleasure reading.
Actually you know what movies ARE just as good as the books, if not better? Anne of Green Gables! (But only the first two movies, not the more recent Continuing Story")
10I have to agree with Mademoiselle. They did what they could with the budget and director they had. I definately think that the next movies are going to be great. The book is a guilty pleasure that I have read over and over again. The movie was good but definately not as good as the book.
11The book was more compelling but I loved the movie too. Edward and Bella were perfectly cast IMO and the soundtrack/score was great. I'm excited New Moon got the green light!
12I'm reading the book now and plan to see the movie after. I usually do it the other way around so that I can enjoy the movie without picking it apart in my head but my guy bought me the book yesterday and I'm already halfway done. Good read. Hopefully good movie.
13Book!! The only movie based on a book that I've seen that was as good as the book is "The devil wears Prada"
14neither. the book has horrible writing and the movie is just horrible. people need to realize they are only in love with edward and Twilight in fact is just teen babble.
15I thought Twilight was better as a movie because it cut out some needless exposition, like I said before, and it got rid of some Bella's incessant gushing that annoyed me to no end (as shannoninsf said). It just seemed to work better as a movie, because the story is good even though Stephenie Meyer's writing style sucks.
I also have to add that I don't find it to be true that the book is always better than the movie. In some cases, the movies are better.
For instance, the only book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy that I actually liked was Return of the King, but I loved the movies much, much more. They cut out a lot of needless crap from the Fellowship of the Ring (book 1) in particular.
Same with The Devil Wears Prada and Anne of Green Gables, I thought the movies were as good as the books. I also liked A Walk to Remember better as a movie...the book bored me to tears and the ending was different from the movie (I think, it's been awhile).
The Harry Potter movies are obviously not as good as the books because it is ridiculously difficult condensing books that are 300-800+ pages into 2 1/2 hour movies at most. Some of the casting was questionable too (I still don't like who they picked as Lupin), but they casted the parts of Harry, Ron, and Hermione very well so that is the important part.
16Neither. The books were rubish and I have no intention of seeing the movie.
17i like the book much better, edward and bella's connection can be
18felt much more in the book, but i still enjoyed the movie.
I can't really say because I just started reading Twilight. I thought the movie was ok, definitely nothing compared to Harry Potter. So far the book seems interesting. I am only on page 89 and I have already had enough of Bella repeating how beautiful Edward is.
19I'd have to say book, but only because Twilight is the ultimate of all fairytales. So much couldn't be adapted because it was hard enough trying to picture it. Just think how hard it was to adapt what they did! Book readers were disappointed because our imaginations made it look way better than a film adaptation of it ever could. All in all, I think that they did their very best and I enjoyed it but like all book turned movies. You can't be as satisfied with the movie than you are with the book.
20I like the book better. I like the plot of the book, but I don't like how she writes. The movie was enjoyable but it did not meet my expectations. Plus, they made the movie kind of cheesy. In general, movies based on books are never great.
21I watched the movie and really enjoyed so I went to buy the book but there seems to be two versions, the original and the theatrical release (which is way cheaper).. is the second totally different from the original book? I skimmed over both and the first few lines and the last few lines of the books are the same. Does anyone know?
22the movie was okay, i loved it because it was twilight but they cut out many scenes. the book was the best ever i loved it beyond words =]
23they're both fairly horrible but the book is better just because that movie was that bad
24Liked the movie...LOVED the book.
25i loved the book! anyone know of any edwards around haha?
i enjoyed the movie, but it was definately cheezy at times. i think it makes it hard to like the movie if you haven't read the book.
26No, people were let down because the acting sucked.
27Never read the book, haven't watched the movie. But have read the summary of it and it sounds oh-so-romantic and cute that I'll start by reading the book first. I Hope I'm not going to find it in the Young Adult section of a bookstore...I'm a little too old to be going there browsing for books ...
28For Twilight neither but in general the book is always better than the film. For example The Kite Runner film was a huge disapointment after reading the book.
29Movie, because in the book i didn´t like that Bella did tell Edward so often how much she´s into him.
30Hope the strong character of Bella in the first Movie hold on and she is like that in the second etc. This mourning in the second was a little bit to annoying.
i never read the book before the movie and i thought that the movie was AMAZING but now i read twilight in about 4 hours, and i had to rush out to get new moon which i also read in about 3.5 hours...so i'm hooked to the book as well. i've even told my fiance that he has to find a bookstore that's open today to get eclipse and the 4th book, and then i'll have to wait for the 5th that's kind of in the works (if stephanie decides to finish it after it's been leaked)
31im not an obsessed freak about this whole thing....umm i just started reading the book so i have no vote rlly...
32Book was horribly written..even for a fairly tale, fluffy romantic fun book. Not sure if I will watch the movie since I must be the only person who bought the book read it and wanted to refund it for my money back...though the movie could be better since I don't have to hear Bella's annoying thoughts about how perfect Edward is and how unworthy and plain she is. Confidence issues much? Co-Dependence issues between the characters...kind of turned me off. THEIR relationship does NOT represent what an ideal man and woman relationship should be to me. But that's just me
33I agree that books are more often than not better than their movie counterparts. Something about having the freedom to pick and choose how everything looks in your head definitely makes reading the books a more interesting endeavor. As for Twilight (and Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, for that matter), I have only seen the movies and I think they're great. A part of me is hesitant to read the novels... so I don't think I ever will. I enjoy these series as films and I'd rather not confuse my brain. Ha ha.
34Book, hands down.
I did love the movie though...but it just couldn't compare to the book.
35Neither.
36the movie doesn't come close to the feelings fans have with the book. however, if you are a fan of the series and were disappointed like i was in the movie, then try seeing it again. i saw it again today and liked it much better. i have calmed down over my two major gripes being lack of character development and buildup to the love story. i still wish there had been more of each to convert skeptics and nonreaders who think this is just a series for silly teenage girls, but i was much more accepting the second time around.
37the relationship was very codependent I agree with you CYL. But to be fair alot of media don't portray ideal relationships between men and women. I love Sex in the City but Charlotte and her views on relationships where a bit dated. Bella was flawed and very human in the books and while she didn't always handle everyhting well, she was only what 17? Im 21 and I still wonder why was I that stupid with that particular boy. This being said I still loved the books and at least they werent as poorly written as the Gossip Girl books.
38I enjoyed both...IMHO the books are always better than the movies and of course it's always better to get lost in your own imagination, having said that I like the fact that in the movie Bella came across a little stronger and not as weak and gushy like in the book...
39well, i just watched the movie and had no expectations whatsoever... i just thought it was the IT movie right now so i watched just so i could getinto conversations with a fundamented point of view... BUUUUUUUT i'm a sucker for love stories, so i just loved the movie. Everything about it was cute and believable and i don't know... i can't wait to read the books!
40it sucks to read your comments and know that Bella is super weak and dependant in the books... i've always hated that...
damn!
41I loved the books alot more than the movie, but I did like the movie because I wasn't expecting it to be like the book. Like many others I hope New Moon is better on film.
42ugh the movie was awful, so cheesy. the books are way better. I hope the next movie is better.
43neither. Both stunk.
44I haven't seen the movie, but I just finished the book...in about a day. I was almost instantly hooked.
45I've seen the movie and read the book and I like both, but I like the book better because the relationship between the two characters is deeper and stronger in the book, atleast to me. But I think the reason I really liked both the book and the movie is because I'm a hopeless romantic, and I love cheesy love stories lol. I love my disney princess movies, The Notebook, Tristan and Isolde, Romeo and Juliet...need I go on. All of these stories are unrealistic, but the idea of them, that we'll all find our own Edward is great.
46the book was way better even though the movie was a bit cheesy, i pardon them cause of their low budget. Robert made this movie worth watching.
47I agree with you Alyssa. Edward and Bella's connection is much stronger in the book. In the movie, it seems like they rushed into a relationship and it wasn't very believable that they were in love...it seemed more like lust. I still thought the movie was relatively good, though.
48this is the best book ever written!!
49love both tHe bOOk and the mOvie =]
xx
Definitely better as a book but I really liked the movie too
