One of the biggest movie events of the Fall has arrived, and while you've read some of my initial thoughts on the movie adaptation of the popular books, I'm curious what you all thought of the Twilight movie.
For those of you who've read the books: Is it what you imagined it would be? Did it satisfy you? Do Rob and Kristen manage to properly embody the lovebirds? What about the rest of the Cullens?
If you saw it but didn't read the book: Were you entertained? Does it make you want to read the books now? Or are you baffled by all the hype?
Chime in below!

i loved the cullens, i can't wait to see more of the in the future movies, too bad "new moon" has them gone most of the story. but seeing more of jacob will be fine too.
i think the movie was pretty good, as long as you don't see it with a bunch of pre-teens who scream everytime Rob comes on the scream. seriously you would have thought he was really there
1I've read the books and enjoyed them. I thought the movie was fun, and the eye candy certainly helped.
Kristen and Robert as Bella and Edward were totally believable to me. I also liked Nikki Reed as Rosalie and Elizabeth Reaser as Esme. The special effects were
pretty bad, though - that sparkle thing was terribly done! But $37 mil. only goes so far. Overall, I thought the movie was enjoyable considering the low budget and the cheesy material. I hope
to see it again soon - I missed some of the dialogue because of the squealing teenagers around me.
2cheesy
3I loved it.
4I haven't read the books but I liked the movie..I don't want to read the books; I tried to a while back but couldn't get into them.
5I love vampire stories, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, but the movie was a little too cheesy. Hopefully they'll have more money and input next time around, so they can avoid the bad special effects and give some of the other actors some lessons.
6Too bad the writing (in the books) is a bit juvenile- I would otherwise have liked to read them.
7New director next time!! And let's hope that Taylor Lautner does some growing...
8I loved it...not nearly as much as the book, of course, but they did a good job adapting it to the screen.
Kristen and Rob had great chemistry. I loved Alice (can't wait to see her more in the sequels) and Charlie.
Bottom line, I think if you've read and loved the books, you will most likely enjoy the movie. Some important details and some of the romance is left out, but obviously they couldn't fit the whole book into a 2 hour time frame.
I also think if you've never read the books, you may find it entertaining, but you're missing out on SO much. And I think there might be some confusion--one of my friends who saw it without reading any of the books didn't understand why people were laughing at certain parts. So to really "get" the full effect of Twilight, you HAVE to read the book.
9I really enjoyed it. There were some unintentionally funny moments in the beginning bot good overall. I look forward to the next one. In the meantime, I think I will go see this one, one more time.
10it was very cheesy but my friend and i enjoyed it. not gonna lie though, we did laugh the entire way through - some of it was sooo bad! the sparkling...come on it looked like he was just sweating haha. and the dye job on carlisle and rosalie was horrible! peter facinelli is a hot, hot man but the blonde hair does not work on him. and we couldn't figure out why they felt the need to add in random scenese when they had 500+ pages of book to pull from. didn't make any sense to us (although the scene in the kitchen where they were cooking was one of the funniest of the whole movie in my opinion lol.)
i surprising really liked kristen steward as bella. bella was never my fav character but kristen played her with more guts i thought, making me like bella more. and the girl playing jessica was absolutely hilarious, every scene she was in had us rolling. i liked all of the cullen's, thought the casting was really good for them.
all in all i thought the movie was like the books...those who like them love them, those who hate them really hate them. i kinda fall in between...i like the story but the execution usually makes me cringe, and i def. felt the same way about the movie.
11I thought the movie was just awful. I really liked it when I was reading the book, but I thought they did a horrible job with the film.
12I actually really liked it. I thought it was better than the book because it cut out out a lot of exposition and needless day-to-day stuff, like Bella going to class. This is what I liked:
1.) Robert & Kristen had great chemistry, and they were perfect as Edward and Bella.
2.) Billy Burke did an excellent job playing Bella's dad, Charlie, and I liked the rest of the cast too.
3.) The baseball sequence was much better than in the book! I loved the use of the song "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse in this scene.
4.) The scenery was gorgeous.
5.) I liked that the beginning was more condensed and cut out a lot of Bella's endless descriptions of Edward's beauty. And I think it was very faitful to the book to the most part.
6.) I like that they added in scenes with Laurent, James, and Victoria because they just randomly appeared in the book without much explanation. The ending with Victoria looking at Edward and Bella dancing was odd, but I guess that it is setting it up for the next book?
Dislikes:
1.) Terrible direction and camerawork in some scenes. The constant close-ups and awkward camera angles were distracting.
2.) The scene in the woods where Bella tells Edward that she knows he's a vampire was painfully cheesy and unnatural. I don't remember that scene in that book either...I thought she figured out that he was a vampire in the car on the way home from Port Angeles (which I'm also sad that they cut short because that was one of my favorite scenes in the book).
3.) The first half of the movie moved at a great pace, then it suddenly seemed rushed. Bella & Edward needed more build-up to their relationship.
4.) I think they should've swapped the field trip for the blood typing scene, which was a pivotal scene in the book.
5.) The scene where Edward sparkles in the sun - poorly done.
6.) Bella's stuttering in the hospital was laughable. It was like the sketch of SNL during Weekend Update where Fred Armisen plays that clueless guy who tries to explain something but just ends up stuttering the whole time.
7.) The make-up was dreadful.
13The book was great, the movie was... well if it weren't for the eye candy I would have been upset.
14I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the movie...
15The book is better (as are most book to movies), but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I want to see it again so that I can watch it for what it is. I kept looking for scenes in the book. The scenery was amazing. I was most disappointed in Jasper...not at all how I pictured him!
16I know I'm in the minority on this, at least judging by the screams and sighs of the teenage girls in my showing, but...
I think that the actor who plays Edward is a horrible actor. His smoldering stare and his loving stare look exactly the same. I also think his face is strange looking and not at all attractive. He's not built very well, not in correlation with how attractive Edward should be.
As far as the movie, I liked it, but some of the scenes and sound effects were so hackneyed that the audience laughed during what should be dramatic scenes.
17well - i've seen the books but never ever thought to read them, and last night my fiance and i decided that we should go see the movie and i LOVED IT.
HANDS DOWN BEST MOVIE IN A LONG TIME.
i know that a lot of folks here are dissing it and saying that it's not that great - but i loved it, and i've been moved to get the entire series so i can read more. i HATE not knowing what happens...if the lovers are destined to be or not.
if you haven't seen it already - GO SEE IT.
i can't wait for the 3 sequels to come out and i can't wait for the score to come out too since i have the sound track but i really want to learn to play 'bella's lullaby' on the piano, just like edward did.
18Booooo! That's what I think about Twilight. This movie wouldn't be holding up the way that it is if all the teenage girls didn't support it they way that they do. They love how the main character looks, so therefore they'll be in all awww each time they pay to see it.
19i haven't read the books or seen the movie...i can't get over her name is Bella Swan...really? lmao. I don't know how I feel about this as I usually love vampire themed things...maybe I'll see for video.
20I actually really liked the movie. Though I do admit I felt a little older than some of the girls there (I'm 24).
I haven't read the books yet --- seriously considering getting into them though because I am interested in the storyline.
But yes as others have said some parts were unintentionally funny.... the "sparkle" I was like uhh what? haha and laughed for a good bit. The special effects had me laughing as well, though that is the budget's fault. All in all I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
21I just read the book and was NOT impressed. I doubt I'll ever see the movie now.
22It was definitely a mixed bag for me. Loved Rob and Kristen, who had great chemistry and carried the movie. The actors who played Charlie and Emmett were also definite highlights.
On the downside, the majority of the high school kids overacted every scene which quite obnoxious and on the other side on the spectrum Carlisle Cullen underacted. His voice was completely monotone and had no feeling to it. I also agree with others regarding the lacking special effects and horrible "sparkle scene."
I'm hoping New Moon will get better effects with the larger budget, maybe they'll be able to grow Jacob a few feet as well since he definitely needs it.
23cringeworthy if i had to sum it up in one word.
24i've read the books and thought they were whiny and not well written at all, but now when i watched the movie, i was just stunned. i mean i'm not going to lie, when robert pattinson first came on the screen i gasped a little for breathe, but after oh dear. it just seemed very rushed and its 2 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES!? like it just seemed like all of a sudden they were in love, when in the book you at least see how it becomes that.
movie-wise it was badly directed, mostly badly acted, and badly written.
i didn't expect much out of this movie and only saw it this weekend because of a friend and i think it was a complete waste of my time/money.
Well I am of the school of thought who found the books to be utterly unsophisticated and two-dimensional. I only read them because I wanted to know what all of the fuss was about. So, surprising, I think I found the movie to be better than the book. I'm not saying that the movie was Citizen Kane but I like Hardwicke's style and I thought she always does do somewhat f a good job of getting into young people's heads. I did find Stewart to be a one-note and I feel bad for Pattinson--the part is just so flat
25Book is pure drivel. People compare this to Harry Potter? WTF?!
I read it thinking it would get better because my friend said it was a good read. Horrible prose..with a creepy stalkerish infantalized relationship with Bella. Seriously? Young girls or grown women think a man who watches them while they sleep and stalk them is hot? A female protagonist who is totally weak and has no life and is nothing unless she has a man in her life is someone girls would like to be? Honestly the mindless crap writing that is Stephanie Myers makes me want to barf, I want my money back for the book. And watching the movie on DVD may be a good idea if there was nothing else on the sheleves at the Video Store...at least I wouldn't be subjected to Bella's though about how Edward is SOOO stunning and how UNWORTHY she is of him. *GAG* I thought as a sex we had moved past this.
Whatever...sure I am going to get torn apart by some rabid Twilight fans talking about how its escapism...and ya da ya da ya da. Escapism can still occur with good writing and a female character that can keep herself alive for over 5 pages without having some idiot stalker rescue her because he's been following her and watching her all day.
26I love the vampire genre, but honestly I can't get excited about either the books or the movie.
For the star-crossed vamp/nonvamp love story angle, give me Buffy and Angel any day.
27Totally cheesy but fun. Parts of it were VERY poorly directed and acted, but Bella and Edward were pretty good. Edward did have some moments that were pretty bad acting, though, especially early on, and the scene where she tells him she knows he's a vampire was almost unbearable, but then, I thought it was rushed in the book, too. A little too easy suspension of disbelief. I laughed when the vampires faced off on the baseball field, and Rosalie and Angela were miscast, IMO.
28I thought it was absolutely awful. One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Super cheesy dialogue, bad acting, unimpressive special effects and a story that was not very well-explained for the non-book readers. But because it was so bad, I found it hilariously funny so I really enjoyed myself.
I haven't read the books, but I'm going to give them a shot because I imagine they HAVE to be better than this horrible movie. We'll see.
29I loved the books sooo much but was really disappointed with the movie.
First, the acting was terrible and overdone....everything seemed so cheesy and exaggerated...some of the best and most natural came from charlie and billy
Special effects were horrid...this has already been said but seriously Edward is supposed to be so graceful and smooth at everything and this was not portrayed at all in the movie. I swear in one scene when they were climbing in the trees his face looked like he was falling backwards then they cut away.
I am still excited for what they can do with New Moon now that they will have a much better budget and maybe some more time to redo scenes when its obviously needed.
30I LOVED the Twilight series. They are the best books i have ever read! About the movie... Haven't seen it yet but i will tomorrow. From what people are saying I'm a little reluctant to see the movie. I've a lot of people say how bad the special affects are and they laughed at the special effects most of the time. But, i am still excited to see the movie.
31I hope the nobody will be screaming! If there is it will probably be my obnoxious friends and myself screaming when Pattinson comes imn to the scene.I swear he is the ABSOLUTELY HOT!!!!!!
I think from the previews that Stewart will be good as Bella. But, I think that Pattinson's English accent might ruin it but i dont know!
But i cant wait to see the movie!
I went into the movie expecting the worse and actually ended up enjoying it. There were some kinks that I think need to be worked out...but I really enjoyed Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson...especially Pattinson...I thought he did a great job as Edward...
I am just glad they left out all of the extra cheesy things from the book like Bella's constant fawning over Edward...I like that she came across stronger in the movie than she did in the books...
32I hope that the movie is a good!
33I'm in complete agreement, CYL.
34I'm prepared to be attacked with books.
I think the books are horrible. Yes, they're addicting, but are they well written? No. It's stupid. I have to say that Twilight was very good and if Stephenie Meyer stopped there, it would have been good. But no. She went on. In the books, all we learn about is how Bella can't live without Edward. She'd rather die than be away from him. She's a clumsy girl who can't live without a man. I mean seriously, does this girl have a backbone?? And then all we hear about throughout the books is that Edward is perfect, and dazzling, and in the sunlight he sparkles. HE SPARKLES. Seriously? Oh yeah, and he stalks Bella. CREEPER! And then in New Moon, Bella just mopes around about losing Edward and later Jacob comes in and since she has a man in her life, she's back to normal. Then we get Eclipse, which is semi-good. But then we reach Breaking Dawn and it goes downhill, or wait. It dives right off a cliff.
You know how Stephenie Meyer set up all these, I guess you could call them "Rules", in her earlier books? Bella would become a Vampire. They would have to face the Volturi eventually. There's this conflict between Edward and Jacob. Bella will have to go through the new born phase. She'll have to break ties with her whole past. Those rules are gone. Broken. Disappeared.
The beginning is ok, but then we get to the wedding. This girls right out of high school. You'd think Stephenie Meyer would want to set an example and have her wait a little more, but no. She gets married right after graduation and they go straight off to a private island. It gets way too detailed for the Tweens reading the series. Breaking headboards? Biting Pillows? Bruising Bella? And then of course the weird weird weird weird stuff happens and Bella gets pregnant. So it's a Half Vampire Half Human baby. It just goes bad. Bad bad bad. When reading it, I was forcing myself to turn the page. It switched to Jacob's point of view. But it's more just moping around for him. It gets graphic, and just plain weird later. Bella gives birth and becomes a Vampire. And then she skips the newborn phase. She stays connected with Charlie. And then the whole Jacob/Edward thing? One look at Renesmee (WTF?) and it's over. Seriously? Jacob is like 18, and Renesmee IS A BABY. And then we have this growing conflict with the Volturi. So we get to the "Battle" and expecting to see a full scale war, no. Bella uses her magic Glad Wrap shield and nothing happens. They see Renesmee is good by seeing a person like her, and then it's over. They leave. The whole book breaks all of Stephenie Meyer's preset rules, and it's just bad.
Hopefully, the movie will be better than the book, because I'm not sure what can be worse.
35Mugglecrazed....You really should have had a SPOILER ALERT for that detailed account of the entire series for people who may have not read the books and were looking forward to enjoying them...I'm glad I already did before I read your um interesting? (annoying?) "synopsis."
36Cheesy but I LOVED IT...aww to be 16 again LoL
37I´m from Germany. And our cinema is thanks to the US-Base in the town, the only cinema in Germany which plays Twilight. So i could say i´m very happy that i had the opportunity to watch it on this weekend.
38I read the four books and i was a little bit sad about the movie, because I didn´t like the actresses of Rosalie and Esme. First the weren´t like i imagined them and second I didn´t like the actress of Esme in Greys either. But ok, that's collateral damage.
The whole movie was great. There were so much beautiful pictures of the wood. The soundtrack was great either. It didn´t disturb the movie, it was more silent than a usual soundtrack is.
It was a really great movie and i´m thinking about to watch it another two or three times...
My friends and I have read all the books (and we're in our 20's..) and we decided to check out the midnight showing. It was full of teenage girls and I knew that if I was in high school I'd be wearing my Team Edward Shirt and squeeing too. The movie was not as good as the book but after seeing the trailer and realizing that the movie wasn't exactly like the book or how I made it look in my head I could go with the flow and just enjoy the story being told. I can't wait to see how the next movie is going to be and if the momentum will continue.
39I actually liked the movie for the most part. I wish that it would have been longer because I feel that it was too rushed. Sure it was cheesy - but it is a book/movie about vampires, what do we expect?
I thought Robert did a good job as Edward (he looks much better as Edward than he does in real life) and I like Bella's dad and Jessica. The girl who played Jessica was hilarious!
40CYL, you could not have said it any better
41I loved the movie. I thought they did a great job with the adaptation. I didn't mind the missing stuff nor the additions and changes they put in. I thought it was well done and flowed quite nicely. It was much better than some other adaptations I've seen.
The special effects weren't that great, but it's understandable with the budget they had. They'll get more funding for New Moon, so it'll be better.
I hope they split the next one more half and half than 2/3-1/3, like in the book. I want more Alice/Edward/Volturi than Jacob!
42I haven't seen twilight but i have the read the books i hope that it is good!
43The movie was GREAT! can't wait to see it again. and again and when it comes out on dvd april 09
44i thought the movie was okay. it skipped too much, and i took a friend who had never read the books and she was sorta confused. the acting and dialogue were super cheesy. and the make-up? ugh. i enjoyed the books, so i hope the 2nd movie does better.
45I went into the movie with low expectations and came out satisfied. I actually saw it twice already, and the second time around it was better. It didn't feel as rushed. I was definitely able to criticize alot of things about the movie, but I was able to sit back, relax, and enjoy what was made. As for New Moon, that movie is going to be such a disappointment. Sure it's going to make alot of money because of the devout book readers, but the movie is going to suck. Most of the book is just Bella goofing around with Jacob and missing Edward the entire time. The whole time all anyone is waiting for, which is the only reason why I kept reading the book, is because I was waiting for the day when Edward returned. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Jacob's character. It's just that Bella and his relationship is pretty much static for about 300 pages of the book. So to have a movie where more than an hour would "technically" need to be devoted to them, would be boring and would not sell to viewers.
And for people who compared it to Harry Potter. Well, I'm sorry but it's not. The only way it is similar is the fact that it is a book designed for young readers, and its a series, and it is going to be made into movies. Twilight's following is mostly female and young age. Harry Potter is for boys and girls, young kids, teens, and parents. Harry Potter at least has some depth to it and new mysteries/experiences. The Twilight series is the same thing over and over, a book solely about the relationship between a girl and a vampire. Oh theres some werewolves and cool vampire scenes thrown in. That's about it. Did I mention that I love the Twilight books?
46I didnt see it, BUT i had friends and coworkers that did and they have all read the books and they hated it. said it was cheesy, the acting was terrible, the Spec Effects were terrible, and that people laughed at points they shouldnt have because it was so bad.
47i'm still not sure how i feel about the movie... the screaming girls during the entire movie did not help, nor did their comparisons of the book and screaming "
48OOPS hit post too fast...
but like i was saying, the girls in the theatre and their comparisons/comments "OH THIS IS IT!!" to each and every part. i was so pissed and annoyed, but obviously it caters to a younger demo.
thought most of the acting was cheesy, special effects were horrible... not sure about half the cast. sorry, i couldn't get over "mike dexter" playing carlisle and not a fan of nikki reed so expected more from rosalie. though, jasper cracked me up even though he didn't have many lines.
also felt the last half was completely rushed.. i just hope with new moon, they get a different director.
49I am reading the books - and they are not exactly good literature. They are about the same badly written books as "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and "Gossip Girl". They are NOT well-written and they certainly have some questionable themes that CYL already pointed out. Girl who is dependent on a guy that stalks her and treats her like she is fragile. I read these books not because I admire the characters but because I find it a nice cheesy read- like reading People mag or US Weekly. I know my time is better spent reading the wall street journal or the Economist but I can't help reading gossip and style mags. That is how it is with Twilight. I am an intelligent strong woman who is not being influenced by these books so I see it as harmless fun but I DO have a problem with teenagers reading these books and being so taken away. I know that Edward and Bella's relationship is unhealthy and the type of bad relationship one has when they are dumb and clueless before they finally grow up and move onto a mature relationship based on trust and compromise. Teen girls are more likely to be swept away by an Edward in real life- at least the book Edward has the excuse of being a vampire- in real life he would be an abusive controlling boyfriend.
That being said, I found the movie to be OK. Not stellar and certainly not winning any awards but it can be DVD material. I do think the Bella on screen was way more interesting and she had a backbone compared to the whiny selfish one in the books. Bella is by far my least favorite character- I read the books because I find the vampires interesting and even Jacob has more character development to him. Kristin Stewart definitely made her interesting and endearing. Wish the author could have done the same for her Bella. And Robert Pattison -cute but not a good actor. He was laughably bad. And WTF was up with Jasper? No way. The females, Emmette, and Carlisle were better vamps.
