I've been swatting away the buzzings of "Oscar watch" and "best film of the year" in regard to indie drama The Wrestler for a while now, just waiting until I could see a trailer and hopefully understand what all the fuss is about. The film stars Mickey Rourke (whose "astonishing performance" here has some calling him a "comeback kid") as an aging professional wrestler with a ton of regrets. He starts to try and take control of his life, however, when he befriends an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) and attempts to make peace with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood).
I'm honestly amazed by the praise this film is getting, and while I think the trailer makes it look poignant, I'll have to see the movie in its entirety to fully see what has gotten people gushing so much (100 percent at RottenTomatoes at time of posting this). The Wrestler opens Dec. 17. To check out the trailer for yourself, read more.

I'll see it. I want to know what the hype is all about and by the looks of it, it looks like something I could definitely watch.
1I thought the trailer looked a hell of a lot better than most of the trailers, most of the movies, even, that we've seen this year. It actually has further raised my anticipation for this movie. And what struck me first after seeing it was that the directorial style that Aronofsky seemed to adopt for The Fountain looked to translate over to The Wrestler. Definitely a positive (despite the lukewarm reception to The Fountain). After The Fountain, I have tons of faith in the high potential of Darren Aronofsky and don't have any reason to doubt that The Wrestler will be a quality movie. Hopefully the gushing critics are right!
I always love a story about a character that's down and out and looking for redemption. The character Mickey Rourke (who did look great in the trailer) plays seems to me as a type of character that could be featured in a good Aimee Mann song, something similar to the character of John in The Forgotten Arm.
2well i LOVE the cast of this movie since im' a big fan of ERW. i hpe that i remember to see it when it comes out.
3Believe the hype. This film was amazing.
4i can't wait to see it, it really looks amazing.
5Poor Mickey Rourke. He looks rough.
6I'll always have respect for Mickey Rourke because of Rumble Fish and Diner- he's so incredible in both. And I'm SO excited to see this!
7I think Mickey Rourke is a fantastic actor who got a little lost along the way with the roles he chose. I'm happy to see him doing a film that looks worthy of his talent, and look forward to seeing this!
