A few weeks back, it was the circus that got a melancholy treatment on Pushing Daisies, and this week, it's magic. No cute bunny rabbits and white handkerchiefs here — just a whopping dose of death, daddy issues, and the dastardly Dwight Dixon. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.
So Ned's half-brothers are magicians ("illuuuuuusionists!"), which has Ned hitting the Tums pretty hard. It's understandable: If my magician dad ditched me, only to go find some other family to love instead, I'd probably have some intestinal distress when forced to watch said loving family perform magic tricks, too. Ned tries to get himself up for the Two for the Show show ("I love magic. As much as I love other forms of popular entertainment."), but despite the "sequins and drama and the promise of bloodshed," the fact remains that magic just makes Ned think of the father he lost. And he realizes Maurice and Ralston can go about their magic business so easily because they don't know the truth about their father leaving; the Great Herrmann protected them, letting them believe their dad was attending to "manly man business."
Of course, the Great Herrmann ("Call me Great." "No.") meets his demise when a trick called Cementia goes horribly wrong. While the first suspect is Herrmann's assistant, it soon becomes clear that the real evildoer is the Geek, a magician who desperately wanted Herrmann's attention and possibly to be his successor on the Conjurer's Castle stage but never managed to be anything more than an opening act. And I gotta say, I'm with Herrmann on this one; all that glass-chomping and animal-regurgitating just made me feel queasy. Anyway, Ned and co. unravel the plot (removed shoe magnets, switched blocks of cement, etc.) and send the Geek off to the slammer.
Meanwhile, now that Ned can reconnect with the family he never knew he had, he wants Chuck to do the same. With the help of a little bug microphone pinned to Olive's sweater, Chuck can ask Lily all the questions she has about being a mother. After that hilarious but sad sequence of Chuck desperately trying to get Lily to admit to being a mother (as a telemarketer, cheese saleswoman, and life insurance peddler), it was touching to see her get some answers.
And just in time, too, because that rascally Dwight Dixon is poking around again. He already knows too much about Chuck's family, he's cozying up to Vivian, and now he's exhuming Chuck's coffin only to find it empty — making Chuck's "no body, no murder. Makes for a great urban legend, though" seem awfully prescient.
Some other thoughts:
- I had to pause my DVR because I was laughing so hard at Olive accidentally calling Maurice and Ralston "magically delicious little devils" to Emerson.
- Lily's bird drinks martinis!
- What on earth was that black feather getup of Chuck's?
- Some of the special effects in this episode (the red velvet curtain, the random sperm interlude) seemed a little odd to me.
- So wonderful that Alexandria is getting a copy of the Magic Book of Magic, too. Unlike the Geek, her loyalty deserves a reward.
Anyone else crack up at Chuck's suggestion that they play "ding-dong, ditch" at the aunts' door? Wondering what Dwight is up to now that he's found the empty coffin? Hoping this show lasts long enough for a happy ending? Discuss.

Loved the episode esp Chuck trying to get her Aunt now mother Lilly to admit to being a mother. Although I was also wondering what ther heck the black feather get up was about. The sperm thing was slightly odd but defintely the opening scene from look Who's talking. I was almost expecting the next scene to be Kirstie Alley running into a bathroom stall. I do not like Dwight Dixon at all and someone needs to stop his shenanigans.
My votes for most touching moments of the night were when Ned sat down to tell his brother (half brothers) that their father left them and had no manly man business to attend to. I also loved Ned reminding Olive that she need not be angry about the cruelty to animals while there was a not dead dog and a not dead pig at home to feed and love.
1Great recap of another excellent show. I can only hope that this show sticks around.
2bransugar79 — that was my same thought about the sperm! I wrote something like Look Who's Talking About Pies and Dads in my notes. Heh.
3I loved it. I think the black feather were from someone's costume? I loved that the twins prefer to call themselves "illusionists" . It made me think of Gob Bluth. And what exactly is this Dwight after? Is this really just about watches?
4Oh no, I just read this on another site:
Last night's episode averaged a series-low 4.86 million viewers, Nielsen estimates said, and pulled an all-time worst rating among adults 18-49.
Last nights episode was great, I thought it was hilarious when the great Herrmann told Ned that the boys were needy and to set the ground rules right away. I was also wondering about the feather neck thingy Chuck was wearing and the curtain pull was really getting on my nerves. I hope this show doesn't get canceled.
5BlairBear, it's so sad! The only good-ish news is that ABC put out a press release about how it beat Knight Rider in adults 18-49 for the first time ever. The fact is, that's only true because both shows' ratings were so bad...but it's at least sort of heartening that ABC hasn't given up on promoting it, I guess(?)
6BlairBear, that's so sad to hear. I'm convinced that the Nielsen boxes need to be redistributed. I just think there are in the wrong households...there must be a better way to count ratings and viewers.
7Buzz, Ned's dad didn't ditch him at a magic show, he ditched the twins at a magic show. Ned was left at boarding school.
The episode was cute.
8Francoise - exactly like Gob Bluth! Another great (and, sigh, canceled) show.
I loved last night's episode. The special effects were somewhat distracting, but that's (mostly) okay with me.
I wonder if the aunts will find out Chuck isn't in her grave (doesn't seem like DD will share that news) thereby opening the door for a reunion between the three.
IF this show is canceled - which I hope against hope won't happen! - I really want to know how it would have ended, given a proper run. Would Ned be able to eventually touch Chuck (please say yes!)? Would Olive find love with the espresso machine/homeopathic salesman? I must stop now before I start obsessing...
9Don't you think ABC will give it another shot considering it was Emmy nominated? Has 'Dancing with the Stars' ever been nominated for an Emmy?
10I was so happy to see another episode, but I didn't like seeing gloomy Ned. Emerson fills the role of naysayer; we need Ned in full-on romantic mode, like he was at the end!
11Oh emms! You crack me up, you hopeful, naive poster! If Emmy nominations determined show longevity, we would have a much better schedule on television than there is now...
12The rating are probably low because any people didn't realize it was back on after they took it off for two weeks!
This was a great episode, it reminded me of a Numbers that appeared around Halloween, about a illusionist murdered during her act.
There were so many great lines (actually on every show I've watched this week too), I loved the one about the static heart pump. My boyfriend and I both giggled at the line "learn a new magic trick or play with my monkey", I guess our minds are in the gutter.
The ending was so cute, I especially loved the glass partition.
13juiceejuice — thanks! my typing got ahead of my brain. fixed now.
14Natasha Alexis are yuo a big GH fan or is it just a coincidence?
15I hate that I have class from 6-8 pm and have to miss Pushing Daisies! I watch it online, but I feel like I'm contributing to it's low ratings and being a bad fan.
I hope it doesn't get canceled!
16I'm still confused about Charles and Lily.
But wow, Ned is such a sweet boyfriend.
17I wasn't impressed by last night's episode, I hate to say it. I think I was just not in a good mood last night though. I think I like Season 1 better
But I love seeing Lee Pace on my TV screen every week
18I just heard they're not going to be ordering more episodes (aka canceling) the show! How sad
i love this show!
19Sorry guys- I think it is definitely canceled
They are going to air the 13 episodes that they
have and that's all. I am so sorry I agree, I think only lard-butted idiots must have Nielson boxes- if we had one, I am sure it would reflect better shows!! This show is so innovative and
fun- and we can watch it with my 8 year old, and you just can't say THAT about Fringe or Gossip Girl or other things we like to watch!
Anyway, this was a sweet episode- I also loved the part with Ned telling his brothers that their dad had no manly man business to attend to and when he explains that it was a while ago and he thinks they ought to know and can handle the shock. I also was giggling every time they said 'Cemetia' for some reason.
I really hope that they filmed some sort of wrap-up episode just in CASE they got canceled so everything can work out in the end . We will just have to love it while it lasts
20I agree Reesiekitty, that this was definitely one of the more family-friendly shows on television. It's such a sad show to see leaving
