As the title suggests, in this episode of Desperate Housewives the town of Fairview becomes a "city on fire." It starts out with a fire at the club where the Wisteria Lane boy band Blue Odyssey is performing. Then we travel back in time to the day before and as we learn about the various storylines, did you notice that each scene in that first part of the episode begins with some kind of fire (Susan sitting by her fireplace, Katherine making crème brûlée with that torch thingy, Anne's husband striking a match, etc.)?
Anyway, we get further proof that Dave's a sicko, Julie returns to Wisteria Lane for a visit with Susan and the plot thickens in Porter Scavo's dramatic love life. To chat about it all, read more.
Susan — Yay, Julie's back! But ewww, it's so weird to see her dating that older, thrice-married guy, Lloyd. Susan is pretty wary of this guy and this worsens considerably when she learns that Lloyd plans to propose to Julie. So, in her ridiculous, histrionic way, Susan tries to botch Lloyd's proposal at the club, but it turns out she didn't need to worry about Julie wanting to get married — ever. Julie tells Susan she doesn't want to get married after watching her crazy mother's history with men and marriage. Susan tries to convince Julie otherwise, though to be honest, I think it makes perfect sense that Julie would have those beliefs (and if they help stop her from marrying creepy Lloyd, all the better).
Bree — Funny gal Rachel Harris guest stars as a reporter trying to expose the dirty truths behind the "perfect" image Bree puts forth in her cookbook. Bree almost succeeds in making her life seem spotless in every way — until Orson's new parole officer leaves a message on the machine for all to hear (and Andrew asks, "Now can I be gay?"). From there, Sandra the reporter only needs to dig a little around Wisteria Lane to uncover all sorts of interesting tidbits for her story (and for the other neighbors, some of whom are giddy to know that Bree was once a "booze hound"). In the end, Sandra says she thinks Bree sets up impossible standards for women with her cookbook, but Bree explains she's so imperfect that sometimes it's nice to do just one thing right, even if it's just a casserole.
Gaby — Virginia's back! After her blowout with Gaby in the last episode, Virginia returns to the Solis home and informs them that they will be the sole recipients of her massive fortune when she dies. Gaby is reluctant at first, but of course she can't resist a massive fortune. The night of the Battle of the Bands, Virginia shows up with a limousine and insists Gaby go with her. Virginia's desperation is meant to make her seem like a loon, I think, but it mostly just breaks my heart. At the club, Virginia tells Gaby she's enrolling the girls in a fancy school an hour away, and Gaby gets another opportunity to tell off Virginia, once again ensuring that the Solises will see none of Virginia's money. This doesn't change when Gaby helps Virginia exit safely from the burning club.
Lynette — Lynette pays a visit to Anne and calls her "sick" for getting it on with Porter. Anne merely replies that she's glad she's carrying Porter's baby, which is right when Anne's husband walks in. Lynette leaves the house, but then turns back in time to see Anne's husband kicking her. Lynette saves Anne and gets her to the hospital. That night at the Battle of the Bands, Porter hunts down Anne's husband and starts a fight with him. Porter and Lynette leave the club, but later we see that he's obtained a gun, somehow. And now Anne's husband thinks Porter started the fire at the club which, we find out in the previews for the next episode, killed six people.
Dave, Mrs. McCluskey, etc. — Dave's psychiatrist tracks him down at the band's show and confronts him about his move to Fairview. Dave does his best to play innocent but when Dr. Heller asks to speak with Mike, Dave leads Dr. Heller to a storage closet (which he doesn't seem to think is odd at all), strangles him and sets the place on fire. Then, Dave saves Mike from the burning club because he's "not done with him" yet.

I had high hopes for this episode (and this season), but I'm kind of disappointed. If it winds up that Dave's wife and child were killed by Mike in the car crash (which it's increasingly looking like it will), I will be very disappointed. Most people could have called that one episodes ago. And this episode made it obvious that Lynette's son is going to be arrested for starting the fire. Also, I would think the psychiatrist would notice that he was being led in to a storage closet. And, why did the employee restroom lock from the outside? The whole episode seemed to not fit together and be predictable at the same time, if that makes sense.
1I agree with the therapist being led to the storage closet, DUH. I think that the show is definitely picking up steam and is more like the first season. It's definitely more juicy with the older children and storylines. BUT OMG Anne and Porter!? EWWWWWWWW. I think that she is just gorgeous, but EWWWWWWWWW. I think that Porter will get off somehow bc hello there is A BODY in the back that is obviously strangled, there is no way that the fire could completely ruin that right???
2Actually, lilkimbo, I think in a previous episode we found out something about Dave's brother being killed in prison by another prisoner. Can anyone back me up on that? Am I imagining things? My husband and I both guessed that Mike (who has been to prison) somehow accidentally killed Dave's brother. Unless Dave was making that story up. Who knows. If that had been Dave's wife & daughter killed in the car accident then you'd think Dave would be pissed at Susan as well.
3And how do we know that Dave's not upset with Susan as well? It's obvious that Susan still loves Mike. Wouldn't getting to him hurt her, too?
4And the brother thing doesn't make sense to me because it doesn't correlate with Dave having a history in Fairview.
5I liked the episode overall! I thought for sure Virginia would die in the fire and the old Gaby would be back--BUTT that would have been too easy I guess! I really thought most of the facts of the episode made sense (maybe the therapist thought that the band was relaxing in the storage room?!? haha) but the lock on the outside of the bathroom door didn't make sense AND I'm pretty sure it's illegal to lock an emergency exit! ha! I also hope Porter doesn't get blamed for the fire!
As for the Dave thing--I thought the same thing as tini. I never thought of the possibility that could have been his wife/child killed. I never thought Dave had a "history" in Fairview though (wouldn't someone recognize him--he rides around on his bike constantly haha!) I thought he just wasn't supposed to be IN Fairview. Even the therapist says to him "Why are you here", and he says "My Wife is from here". So wouldn't the therapist know if he was from there? Whatever the back story is-I CANT STAND HIM!
6The brother thing could have been a red herring. I don't think it was said that Dave has a history in Fairview - just that he has a connection there. And I doubt the strangled body wasn't completely burnt to ash. That is where the fire started, after all. But if they can manage to ID the victim, Mrs. McClusky would know who he was. Also, Jackson did see Dave coming out of the storage room and if that's ruled to be where the fire started, maybe that information will come in handy? Otherwise, what was the point of sending Jackson to the employee bathroom? Oh, and how did Julie know there was an exit there? There were a lot of inconsistencies in the episode and that was just one.
On another note, I want to feel sorry for Virginia, but her being lonely would really only explain why she shows up all the time (and even that's a bit of a stretch, she is really intense), but not her insisting on where the girls go to school.
7The therapist mentioned that Dave wasn't supposed to be in Fairview because of his history with the city. From what I can tell, it's supposed to be medium-sized city. It's quite possible that no one would recognize him.
8And again, I didn't say he was from there. It's very possible that his wife was visiting there when she was killed, which would make perfect sense. He would have a history with the city, but wouldn't necessarily be from there.
9Am I the only one that likes Dave?? Whoever plays Mike is just phoning it in at this point. Bor-ing. Dave is the one interesting male on this show except for the always-hilarious Orson. Speaking of Orson I almost died when Bree opens the door and he's sitting by the fire with a pipe and a book. Too funny. Susan needed to be killed in the fire. I cannot stand her! I need more Katherine, she's my favorite right now.
10Good episode. And yes, the reason Dave is after Mike is most likely because Mike killed his brother in prison. He doesn't have a history with Wisteria Lane, but since Mike is there that's why he's there (also probably the reason he married Edie--to have a way to be near Mike "legitimately")
I kind of thought for a second that when Virginia got knocked down while everyone was trying to get out of the club she was going to die and Gabby and Carlos were going to end up with her fortune since she wouldn't be able to change the will. But that thought was killed when Gabby went and helped her. Guess that shows that Gabby isn't that heartless, although it was funny when she was like well now that I'm saving your life can we stay in the will and Virginia was like no. lol
11It's interesting that everyone is so convinced that Mike killed Dave's brother in prison. Other than the one comment, what makes you think that?
12(I have read several places that Dave's wife and child were the ones killed in the car accident.)
13Sidenote: Although Buzz doesn't recap Brothers and Sisters, I figure a lot of people who watch DH watch B&S too since its right after, so how hilarious was last night's epi with Paul. I couldn't stop laughing!!! Paul and Saul lol...
14I like Dave too, his character is so interesting and maniacal. I think that Dave will probably get away with it to begin with and then the bits and peices will fall into place, he is obviously not a forever cast member, as he BLATANTLY just killed a man

But why should an employ send Jackson to their bathroom?

17Dave locked Jackson in the washroom because he saw Dave coming out of the storage room. If he gets locked in the bathroom and dies there are no witnesses to him coming out of the storage room.
18I agree the therapist storage closet thing was way too ridiculous, but otherwise I loved this episode. Totally agree it's getting back to the old DH en flagrante juiciness! Love it! A lot more twists and turns, such as with the Gabby storyline. I love how she is developing as a stronger, more complex character, but not corny like Susan. And yes, the Dave storyline better not involve the crash. Way too obvious. Buzz:fabulous catch on the fire. Funniest scene of the night: Edie's Cougarific choreography to "Ride, Sally Ride."

20did anyone else notice that the band that the guys were competing against in battle of the bands was Tokyo Police Club? Or at least the song was theres, it was "In a Cave" I had listened to it that day before i watched too haha
21actually no one ever said it was dave the doctor wanted to talk to. i think that dave is out to get carlos but wants to frame mike. that is why he didn't let mike die in the fire. he needs him for his plan.
this is all just speculation and hunches though.
22I thought this episode would've been so much better...i'm surprised that none of the main, or even recurring, characters died in the fire except Dave's shrink. I thought Mike or Jackson would die, or even Virginia.
Maybe I'm just stupid but I thought Dave was surprised that the fire started burning up the club. I know he intended to destroy the body, but not the whole club. Otherwise, wouldn't he try to escape? But I guess that doesn't make sense...there would be no other reason why he would lock Jackson in the bathroom. By the way, that was way too contrived that there was a lock OUTSIDE the bathroom door, and that the club owner (the abusive husband) locked the emergency exit.
23did anyone else notice how skinny marcia cross looks lately? when she's at the club wearing that low-cut shirt, you can see all of her ribs...wasn't very attractive.

25Hopefully they are leading us along to fall for the predictable storyline (spouse of mom/kid from accident) and then there will be a twist that will actually be a surprise. Let's hope the writers could have come up with something less predictable!

27emstee, I think Carlos is the one he is after too. Because Carlos is blind, he doesn't recognize who he is.
