Ohhh-kay. This week's Grey's Anatomy has left me confused, like I tumbled down the Seattle Grace rabbit hole and came up in a world where nothing made any sense. Whether it was the departure of Hahn, the arrival of Meredith's old backpacking buddy, the trouble everyone had relating to the new heart surgeon, or Izzie's struggles with Denny's memory, there's a lot to try to make sense of. Want to try to puzzle through it with me? Just read more.
Gotta start with Izzie. She's still seeing the ghost of Denny, and not least because she's working on her second heart transplant patient in a row. This one, at least, is a man who knows from ghosts: He's a Native American who believes his body is being haunted by the spirit of his first heart donor. While he kicks Izzie off his case (he's got enough ghosts of his own), he also advises Izzie to get rid of anything she still has of Denny's, which is how Alex comes to burn that maroon sweater in the fireplace. And yet . . . when Izzie retreats to her room, Denny's still there, and when she touches him, he's real. Now, there was a little part of me thinking, "Denny's real! Izzie and Denny! Love forever!" But the much bigger part of me was thinking, "Huh?" Leaving aside the rumors that might have been bandied about and squarely denied — if Izzie can touch Denny, then there's something wrong with Izzie, right? She says so herself in this episode. Is she dead? Dying? Going through some kind of prolonged mental breakdown?
Then, we have our newbies. Starting with Virginia Dixon: I get that these are surgeons, not mental health professionals, but really, nobody recognizes the symptoms of Asperger's? I loved the way she sticks it to Bailey in the end, saying she knows she was manipulated. And I appreciate that Grey's is trying to do a story about a disorder that affects so many people, but I'm afraid this could be one of the things the show thinks it can do better than it actually can. And besides that, if Dixon is a character whose central trait is her inability to connect, will we be able to connect with her?
Then there's Sadie. First of all, Melissa George looks a lot like Katherine Heigl, which the Grey's conspiracy theorist in me couldn't help but focus on. Second, I do want to know what Meredith was like before she became the whiny, lovestruck surgeon we've come to love/loathe, so I'll be curious to learn about the "adventures of Death and Die" (er, I assume Meredith and Sadie). But that whole thing with her taking off her top and slicing open her shoulder? Not sure I'm liking where that's going. Also, does it make any sense that an intern would just show up in the middle of a year?
Some other stuff happened, too:
- Hahn's departure is certainly not explained. All we really get is Callie sobbing in the ER because she's been channeling all her psychic pain into reconstructing legs for a man who will never get to use them. I wash my hands of that story.
- Owen Hunt continues to be a redeeming factor, but he's also . . . a little scary? Talk about psychic pain. That kiss with Cristina was both incredibly hot and borderline violent.
- The sketchy intern surgery clinic is more or less found out, thanks to Lexie's multitude of band-aids that lead people to believe she's "a secret cutter."
- Derek's dispatched to tell Sloan not to put "Little Sloan" in "Little Grey," which is best for Mark's response: "OK, that's just creepy. And inaccurate. Big Sloan!"
Lots to discuss, so let's get to it. What's wrong with Izzie? Are Dixon and Sadie good additions? And wouldn't burning Denny's sweater in the fireplace just make the whole house haunted?

I was slightly confused by this episode as well, but it was highly entertaining... I love Sloan and Hunt, but does hunt like christina or not? Also, Denny? He is hot, but his storyline is OLD.
1GRRR They are taking this Denny thing too far....WTH is going on? and poor Alex....he can never catch a break... I love Alex and Izzie together and now it looks like it won;t happen.
2Also, asbergers or not, I would not trust that Heart Surgeon. Her act seemed a little over the top, you know?
3I liked Virginia Dixon's character a lot, and that addition would be fun.
4I'm not sold on the other one yet.
However I trust the show and will go with its flow.
I HATED last night's episode. For one, stop with the Denny story! It's over. So freakin' over. All I could think was "go away, Denny, come on, go away" the whole time. And um, Izzie? You're making out with thin air. Didn't you just tell Alex last week that you wouldn't go crazy? Just sayin'.
Also, the whole "death" and "die" thing just sounds ridiculous, no matter whose mouth it's coming out of. And while Melissa George is okay, why does she always look like she's pursing her lips? Anyone else get that?
Don't think I like Owen Hunt. He's creepy. When he was about to kiss Christina he looked more like he was planning to bite her mouth off. He freaks me out, and isn't super redeeming so far.
The interns thing is weird, and it looks from the previews that someone's getting hurt next week. Uh, yeah, did anyone NOT see that coming?
Also, Callie crying in the ER? What is wrong with these people that they can never have breakdowns on their own time?
5I've been waiting for your review just to make sure I'm not crazy. I've got to say, this is the first episode for Grey's I didn't really like or enjoy...despite the Denny factor. I really really love Denny, but I feel like their dragging this out because the fans love him. In talking with a co-worker, we decided Izzie is either insane and this is how she'll be written off the show (because I really think Katherine Heigl is done with it) or she's actually having these moments with Alex, but is still insane and imagines Denny. I think that thought is a stretch, because I don't think Shonda would come up with something like that.
The rest of the episode was annoying. Please, if anyone has been an intern, let me know if you'd take to suturing eachother. I just don't believe it! And next week's episode looks even more ridiculous.
My problem with Callie is the actor, not the story. I don't believe anything she's going through and I really didn't feel anything toward her.
Sadie...oy. Please let her only be on 3 episodes and serve as a wedge between Christina and Meredith so that they can get some seperation.
And yes, Dr. Hunt though a little rough, gave me something to look forward to this week.
6Oh, but the Little Sloane conversation was hilarious. Only real redeeming moment for me last night.
7I'm reserving judgement on the Dr. Dixon storyline, since I think it could go either way it this point. But the whole Izzie/Denny thing -- what the hell is going on?! I mean, I loved Denny and Izzie, but the writers need to move on and find another good plotline for Izzie. And poor Alex. He doesn't deserve two crazies in a row.
8Yes!! little Sloan/little Grey/big Grey provided some much needed comic relief.
Dr. Dixon could be interesting in that she, like Hunt, works the opposite of how Seattle Grace operates (har har). So the contrast could be interesting. Would I want her as a heart surgeon? Uh, I don't think so...if something abnormal happens she freezes? No thanks.
9The Denny thing is really taking it too far. I loved Denny and Izzie, cried like a baby when he died, and was kinda interested in the ghost of Denny checking in on her, but seriously... now she can touch and kiss him @@?!?! It's getting a little too soapy in the Passions sorta way.
Other then that this episode was ok. I think the line from Sloan was the best of the night. McArmy is hot and kinda creepy for sure. I feel like at any minute he may snap.
And has anyone else noticed George's storylines are decreasing? Last week he was working on the fake body and this week he was in one scene for like a split second...
10My only response to last night's episode is, wtf?!
I'm really hoping we get a better explanation of Hahn's departure. I mean sure, we kind of know what went down, but that can't be it. It's so sad. I really enjoyed her character.
Love Denny and Izzie, but I have no idea where this story is going. I'm having a love/hate relationship with it. On the one hand it's great to see Denny, on the other, let him rest in peace! Also, I think it's showing what a great actress KH is, but I hope it doesn't mean anything for her character. I would hate to see her go.
Also, the Christina/Derek thing at the begining of the episode was great. I love when they make Christina a human with emotions.
11I think Denny's whole "I'm here for YOU" line is a sure sign that Izzie about to meet her demise.
12The Izzie/Denny story is KILLING me. I am the biggest I/D fan but when he was alive, & yes I liked it when he came back earlier this season when she showed him her prom dress but now this is not right. He's dead and she is not (yet?) but God it is breaking my heart 'cos as much as I loved them together this cannot turn out well so it needs to stop. Although JDM being back on my TV every week makes me HAPPY!!!
Owen is scary & stuff but OMG I think he is HOT & I think he likes Cristina but doesn't want to. He feels the need to connect with someone and she is probably the only one but at the same time he's all scarred and stuff, anyway yes HOT kiss & he is just so so so HOT!!!! I don't know why but I am seriously crushing on him, I hope they don't turn him into a violent guy
Nothing else to really say, they were the main 2 stories I cared about!!!
13buckley9383 - that was my first thought too!
14I burst into tears whenever Denny is featured. I love him! I also noticed that he said "I'm here for you" like 3 or 4 times. Maybe he's there to take Izzie to Heaven with him.
15you can't kick off one female and bring in two... Izzie is gone and Sadie is her replacement
16I agree Buckley....he kept saying it too..."I'm here for YOU, for YOU Izzie" it was getting annoying. But last night was a really frustrating episode, but it's definitely making people talk!
17Last night was a really great episode, but in all of this, I'm just worried for Alex. Why are the writers torturing him?
Oh but MCARMY - I can't get enough of him.
18It pains me to say this...but I think Grey's Anatomy might have jumped the shark.
This Denny thing - WHAT are they doing? I can understand her seeing him, and even talking to him too. But kissing him? Making love to him? (which is what it looks like from next week's episode preview)ENOUGH! I will reserve complete judgement until I see next week's show but I am very skeptical this storyline is going to continue to be interesting.
And now Hahn - a world class surgeon - QUITS without giving notice because of a stupid fight? What professional woman would do that? I get that she was written out, but for the sake of the story at least give her a REAL exit. Lame!
And this new addition - Sadie - let's just bring her on with BARELY any back story! She was a friend of Meredith's and out of nowhere she's an intern now at Seattle Grace agreeing to the obnoxious secret intern society of cutting each other open? Give me a break!
You fail me Grey's.
19Hunt is great. Love the new Dr. Dixon. The new intern took her clothes off way too fast. I mean it was her first episode for pete's sake. That kind of action should be reserved for the male charcters only. Much more to see there. And Izzy is dying and Denny has come back to take her with him. I hope I'm right about that. I'm so over Izzy.
20well there certainly were moments that were worthwhile and others that just don't make sense to me.
izzy - so are we to think that the rumors about a brain tumor are true? i think that it's possible seeing as how they touched upon the whole imagining a guy story when derek and meredith were doing all their surgeries last season.
callie - that was a hard one for her, and i really was thinking that christina would bond more with her after that scene in the OR. we'll have to see.
christina and hunt - what an odd guy he is, but it's nice to see that she's not just melting into him and that she's going to play the game a little
i think that 'little grey' and sloan are going to have something there - he was looking longingly at her in the bar...
sadie - i really do wonder what they are going to do with her since it sounded like the story line that she had originally was changed. it's def interesting to see her come it with NO explanation and to just start in with the crew like that.
21also, OK, I just have to throw this out here. If Denny is real to Izzie, but presumably is not real to anyone else, is she just making out with air? We do briefly see her talking to air/herself in this episode, but it's all before she touches Denny. Wouldn't people start thinking she was nuts pretty quickly?
22LaurenG22 have you ever met anyone with Asperger's? I have 3 friends who have it and 2 of them act similar to Dr. Dixon. All 3 of them are incredibly smart as well. It doesn't make them stupid, it just effects their social interactions.
This episode was okay. I don't like McArmy. He's ugly and scary.
I liked Callie crying and Sloan protecting her. I like those 2 together. He'd really does need to keep his Big Sloan our of Little Grey. I don't think Lexie's that dumb though.
I love Mary McDonnell but I don't think he character will stay for more than the 3 episodes she's taped. I also didn't like 'Sadie' but I feel like she may be the one who sticks around if anyone does.
I don't get the Denny thing but I'm not complaining because JDM is gorgeous so anytime I get to see him I'm happy!
23Ahaha Buzz I was thinking that too! I was just waiting for Alex to walk in and be all 'WTF?!'
24Are they seriously bringing someone back from the dead? It's SOOOO lame!!!!!! Next week Izzie is going to have sex with a ghost....right.
25This whole episode was SO bad. I was just open-mouth shaking head watching going "what is happening?"
Merediths old friend is PSYCHO and definitely weird. Uh, she cut herself and hoped these interns could stitch her up. Um, odd.
The whole Izzie thing I gotta say just is so dumb, my mind was asleep when she was on. So Alex is gonna walk in and shes gonna be doing what exactly?! Grinding the bed? Exactly Buzz, kissing air?!
Lame. I love Denny. Like seeing his sexy mug, but this is just ludacris.
Not happy.
26elle619-I agree with your comment 100%...last night I felt like I was watching an episode of Days of Our Lives or General Hospital! As much as I LOVE Jeffrey Dean Morgan & loved the Izzie/Denny storyline, it's getting waaaay too soap-opery. Next they'll be saying she has an inoperable brain tumor or something...ugghhh!!! This storyline is getting stupid/ridiculous & the writers need to move on!
27I also agree with buckley that by Denny saying "I'm here for you" means Izzie is probably dying, which I really hope doesn't happen! I feel so bad for Alex! He's finally being sweet & I love him & Izzie together...damn give the poor guy a break! First Rebecca goes mental & now this?!?! He's never going to want to fall in love again!
As for the rest of the episode, it was ok. I'm not digging the new characters or the whole intern secret society thing but let's see what happens. Dr. Hunt is very sexy & the kiss at the end with Christina was kinda scary but also hot! I like that she walked away from him & that they aren't just putting them together right away, I'm excited to see how it all works out...McSteamy def had the best line of the night though LOL!
As far as Izzie goes- I can definitely see them going down some brain tumor, serious mental illness, etc path. It would have to be something because otherwise it wouldn't make sense and this is a (mostly!) realistic show.
Couldn't stand Sadie. Hope she goes. Loved the scene with Dixon and Bailey in the elevator. Bailey did try to manipulate her and spoke to her as if she was stupid. Bailey deserved to know that it hurt Dixon. Great scene with the both of them I thought.
I really liked Christina coming to Callie's rescue in the ER. I really like Sloan and Callie's relationship- whether it's sex buddies or friends. They seem like true friends.
LOVE Hunt. I think a lot of people are forgetting his backstory. He jumped so violently when Christina surprised him because he's been in combat for several years and watched his whole unit die. It'll take him a while to recover and connect with someone. I don't think he's violent. I think he's a basketcase of emotions and finding his reality again. I'm really interested to see how their story line progresses. Plus, whenever he looks at/kisses Christina like that- I melt.
28i only saw the last 5 minutes and i'm not even sure i want to watch the whole thing! i agree on the denny thing- its getting ridiculous. when i flipped on the tv the first scene i saw was her with him and i was like o not again! i mean i thought we were finally going to see her and alex have a chance and now this? and yea we all knew they couldn't explain hahn leaving very well since that was just a sudden thing- so that was a stupid waste there! i'll reserve other judgement til i actually watch it but i can tell already i'll be pissed!
29Buzz - I thought the same thing! Like someone was going to walk in while she was tongue-kissing thin air. We know that no one else can see him at the hospital, and Alex obviously couldn't see him when she was saying goodbye before she went home. Honestly, I know a lot of people find Izzie annoying, but she's one of my fave characters, and if she dies and they leave with robot-Yang and whiny-Meredith and Lexie the secret cutter, I'm gonna be pissed. I'm starting to think that Shonda Rhimes has gone crazy herself.
30God. The interns are stupid. Cutting each other? Please. When Sadie joined in, I disliked her even more. There isn't enough backstory to make her character likable.
I'm sick of Denny and Izzie. They were endearing before, but now with the reoccurrence of Denny, it's getting old fast.
The Callie crying scene...aw. I'm glad she has Sloane's shoulder to cry on. Mark definitely did have the best lines on the show.
The only scenes I love were Mark's, Christina's, and Hunt's. I absolutely LOVE Hunt! He is such a dynamic character. That kiss between him and Christina...I got extremely giddy. I just melted at that scene. The look on Hunt's face is so expressive. He doesn't have to say it out loud; it's seen on his face.
31Couldn't agree more Buzz! I really am interested to see where this story goes.
Also, here's a thought...In real hospitals, they keep things like suture kits, and local anthesetic on pretty tight lockdown/inventory...I don't think the whole "intern secret socitey cutting club" would actually occur.
32Loved the Little Sloan/Little Grey's line last night and absolutely HATED the return of Denny. I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one. Enough already! I liked the addition of Dr. Dixon to the cast; her "showdown" with Bailey was quite good. Not sure yet about Sadie, but I did laugh a lot at the opening scene with all of them in bed. Hunt seems to be having as much trouble connecting as does Dixon; I'm anxious to see how these characters develop. But seriously, if Denny doesn't go away soon, I might be one viewer who does.
33"Owen Hunt continues to be a redeeming factor, but he's also . . . a little scary? Talk about psychic pain. That kiss with Cristina was both incredibly hot and borderline violent."
I thought it was brutally hott! I want someone to grab me and kiss me that way.
Everytime I see Denny I burst into tears and start having flashbacks about the episode in which he died. I love seeing him but I kinda wish Shonda would let him rest in peace. Its also a little draining for me to have an emotional breakdown every Thursday night, lol.
While I dont really get where they are going with the whole Izzie seeing Denny thing I am curious to find out
Sloane is the unsung hero of this season. He has the best lines and best dialogue! I used to think he was just cad man candy but I am seriously loving his character now. And not just cuz he's beautiful.
Christina and Owen fascinate me. I think he is sooo brutally hot. Even though I dont get the whole damaged man thing he has a combustible quality that even when I don't like what he's saying or doing...I still wanna do him lol. I just hope him and Christina's relationship gets of the ground and that he comes clean and doesn't play with holding mind games with her for too long. I cant have that happen (again) to my Yang. He desperately wants to connect with her but has no idea how to do it. And the scene with Owen and the patient who ended up dying was really beautiful. He's a great actor. I cant figure out if I wanna hug him or slap him though lol. Guess that's his appeal.
I though Sadie would be more interesting. This episode left me feeling kinda blah with respect to her. I do hope we get to hear more about Mer b4 she became the whiny doc we all know and love. I wanna hear stories about her being bad!
34LOL same as everyone. Love the Little Sloan/Little Grey line.
Callie crying... um... could have done without it. It took SO long for someone to even touch her for comfort. That was the worst drop off for a character.
McArmy is good. I want to know what his issues are. he said he's not the same from the last time he was there. (like a week ago) So we'll see what happens.
Alex is fantastic. Poor Alex. Izzie get over your issues. See a psychiatrist. she should have gone after he died. Geez. I'm going to be so angry if she's not dreaming or crazy.
And where was george. He had one line and was out.
DID NOT LIKE Dr. Dixon AT ALL!
35amloveaffair - I am so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Dr. Hunt is NOT hot. He doesn't do it for me even a little bit.
36don't really like "die." lameee nicknames. i was really confused in the first few minutes adn it took me a while to reailze she was an intern there aha. why does ale get all the crazies? poor boy
37i agree with the people above that say that izzie might be suffering from something, either a brain tumor or some form of dementia. maybe shell go down the rebecca path, which will be so sad for alex! but this episode was too busy, with the little sloan part def being the funniest.
also, i dont think a whole team of doctors will ever drop everything to operate on a homeless guy. i mean, everyone deserves medical care, but in rel life it just doesnt happen.
38methinks someone has a brain tumor. good riddance katherine heigel.
39Brain TUMOR IZZIE! Poor Alex..two psycho gfs..the man will never commit to another woman again. He really is quite sweet and caring underneath his tough exterior.
And yes Dr. Hunt..borderline hot and scary that kiss.
Loved Sloan and "inaccurate" about the little sloan part... I enjoy Derek and his friendship.
40The whole Denny/Izzie storyline is so much like a General Hospital storyline where Nikolas had like some kind of tumor and could touch and feel his dead fiancee Emily. So my guess is Izzie has a tumor. Come on. If that is true couldn't they come up with a new original storyline. Geesh. Very diappointing and not interesting at all to me.
41i miss George... :0(
the whole Izzie/Denny thing is whacky. Though it makes for some great quoteable lines, hahaha. i'm thinking brain tumor too.
No wonder Alex is all messed up. But seriously, the storyline has gone from Izzie begging him to open up, to him begging her to open up, in the course of like 3 weeks. i feel like Izzie, i can't deal with him being a jerk one minute and a sweetheart the next, lol.
don't like Dr. Dixon. don't miss Dr. Hahn!
i still love Grey's but it's getting borderline ridiculous.
42I could tell the first time I saw Sadie that she would be a character I dislike, and so far so true.
43The Izzie/Denny things seems like such a low blow, they're trying to drag us in by bringing Denny back and therefore giving Izzie more likeability. But she kissed his ghost for christ's sake, his GHOST. Get her some other guy, don't try tomanipulate the audience with all this ridiculousness.
when izzy was "with" denny at the end talking, i kept thinking they would cut away and it would be alex when they went back to him. i wish that would have happened instead of what did.
44amloveaffair, I never once said or hinted that people with asbergers were dumb or incompetent. All I said was that I would NOT trust that doctor.
45it's okay, I wasn't accusing you of saying that but it just seemed like that's what you meant. Just because she's weird doesn't mean she's a bad doctor.
46Yes, I'm confused and i thought it was just me because i haven't watched in a while. The whole Izzy thing is perplexing.
47BuzzSugar, whomever is behind that pseudo, I just want you to know that in one little article, you've just synthetized everything I felt about Grey's episode while watching it. It's amazing how well you can transcribe the feelings that I didn't put into words. Thank you !
PS : McArmy has serious problems and he should see to solve them before forcing him again on Christina (allright, not entirely "force him" because she was a semi-consenting adult, but still, that's how it felt).
48I think Izzy's going to become schizophrenic. Seeing and hearing things that aren't there? It sounds like something the writers would do. And it would explain why Shonda Rimes said no when asked if Izzy would develop a brain tumor. Schizophrenia is the answer!
49Come on, "I'm here for you"????Clearly Izzie is gonna die!, Katherine has been a little mean with comments about the show. Maybe it's her time? I dunno but clearly Shonda is ready to do way with a major character...
