We all know that Hollywood is extremely remake-happy these days, so I'm not even going to resist the Karate Kid remake news because it was probably bound to happen, right? Now moving onto the casting: Jaden Smith is first in line to play the lead role, the Kid himself, in a new version of the 1984 pop culture staple. Variety has more info:
The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.
The younger Smith, who next stars in The Day the Earth Stood Still, is a martial arts practitioner.
That little Jaden Smith is so adorable. Thoughts on the next Karate Kid? Are you annoyed this is being remade at all? If it has to happen, is Jaden a good fit?

Oh jeez...now this is going to far...first of all the kids like 8...and secondly is Hollywood running out of fresh ideas? I mean come on...I'm really not liking this while remake trend that I am seeing...what's next?
1^ I agree. What ever happened to original movie storylines and ideas? Hollywood just seems to be be rehashing the same type of movies every few years.
2Whatever. I'm so over all the remakes. Don't those people get paid to be creative?
3I love karate kid!!! And Jaden Smith is such an adorable kid.
I will definitely watch it!
4i don't think this is a good idea.. jaden is so small and too young for the part... i mean - really?! HE's going to be able to fight off bullies like in the original? it doesn't so believable at all.. i can't help but feel - nepitism played a HUUUUUUGE role in this..
5and btw - really - can we come up with original movies now? i think it's time.. tick tock tick tock
Mm, I don't know what to say about this one. You're right, he is too young, I forgot about that one. And I have been tired of the remakes for a looooong time now. I'm suprised the idea of doing a remake movie is honestly considered in the industry. Almost no one appreciates them lately.
6The orginal was way before I was even born, so I wouldnt mind seeing a remade version, and I think Jaden is so darn cute
7I agree Lavinie he is too little to be able to fight off bullies, but they may make the bullies small as him.
8STOP with the damn remakes already!! I grew up watching that movie and don't want to see any remake.
Are the writers unable to make up their own ideas or something?
9NOOO! I love The Karate Kid!
I agree- enough remakes! If they actually go through with that Footloose remake I'm gonna kill myself!
10Ugh, we don't need a remake. On a positive note, it's can't be any worse than Hilary Swank's version.
11He's too young! And you can't remake a classic like that--it was perfect.
12well first off i don't know if there's really a market for this movie - we know that there were soo many version of the original and that hilary swank was actually the 'next karate kid' - but this is just too much.
i guess we'll see if he's able to carry a movie and if his parents passed along their acting chops to him.
13well this has cash cow written all over it. little will smith is a pretty talented actor though.
14i'd watch it out of curiosity more than anything else.
for those who are sick of hollywood remakes, there are still people making fresh martial arts movies though - www.shantytownshowdown.com
Seriously, nothing against Will Smith, or his kid, they are both good actors....but seriously....what gives a coon the right to take a white boy movie and completely ruin it? Man, go remake the Whiz or something. Fact is, then and now, there is never going to be a black remake that will even compare to a white original.
