Wow, this is intriguing: Nicole Kidman is set to play "the world's first post-op transsexual" in The Danish Girl, which will be based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Greta Wegener. The Hollywood Reporter has details:
Their marriage took a sharp left turn after Einar (Kidman) stood in for an female model that Greta ([Charlize] Theron) was set to paint.
When their portraits become wildly popular in 1920s Copenhagen, Greta encouraged her husband to adopt the female guise. What began as a harmless game led Einar to a metamorphosis and landmark 1931 operation that shocked the world and threatened their love.
Kidman has often struck me as a thoughtful actress, and someone who is interested in stories of metamorphosis in general. I have faith in her ability to carry this film, though I'll be very curious to find out what Theron does with her role. I haven't been this fascinated by a film project in a long time. And, of course, this is exactly the type of transformative story that the Academy eats up with a spoon. Curiously, the director attached to the project is Anand Tucker, who has a relatively short filmography (Hilary and Jackie and Shopgirl being his only two directorial projects of note so far).
What do you make of all this?

Well, I really like Charlize Theron, and she usually does a fantastic job (like in Monster. Wow), but Nicole Kidman is just so stiff lately. I feel like all she plays is the unapproachable ice queen. We'll see. The movie sounds really interesting either way.
1Sounds like Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron making out. I predict many Google image searches in many guys' futures.
2hmmm i'm really intrigued by the sound of this project. i think that there's going to be a lot of buzz about this movie since it's based on a true story and it has to AMAZING actresses in the lead roles. i think that sometimes having a less seasoned director could make things better so we'll have to see what the outcome is.
3This might be weird or really good.
I love both of them so I will more than likely see it. I'm sure with them in the movie, the story is pretty solid.
4Wow. I'm definitely curious about this one. Both actresses should be able to play their roles well. Looking forward to learning more about this film.
5Oh wow, colormesticky, you are SO right. I didn't even think of that.
6I can't take Nicole Kidman seriously as an actress anymore, her face has just gotten too weird and waxy, I find myself transfixed and perplexed by it to the point that i forget to even watch the movie!
This film sounds like she might be required to display some degree of emotion, which is kind of hard to do when you've lost the ability make facial expressions.
I have no respect for any actress who allows their vanity to take over to the point where they lose
the ability to use their talent, and back when she could move her face she was a very talented actress.
7:oO ... yeiiiiii.. dream come true....
8wait, so is nicole kidman going to pretend to be a man for half the movie? HOnestly, I'm not a big fan of hers, but I really like charlize, so we'll see what this looks like as it actually gets made.
9As long as they make out I am in.
10Wow! I didn't even see colormesticky [+] comment before posting... guess I fall into that category
11The story of these two is FASCINATING. I read it in a Sociology class in college, and we spent 3 classes discussing it. I am really intrigued by this and can't wait to see it. I wish they would have gotten someone other than charlize though. I've felt ever since Monster she only takes on these roles that *might* garner her Oscar noms. Just seems a bit heavy handed to me, but it's probably just me. LOL
12I love Charlize Theron but I'm sorry Nicole Kidman ruins every film to me. She's too stiff onscreen. I respect Charlize ever since i saw what she did in Monster. It wasn't just makeup her acting was brilliant. I find Kidman so overrated and atleast Charlize made it on her own we wouldn't even know who Kidman was without Tom Cruise and now she's just desperate to get her career on track so she's going for the Oscar-y role.
Theron is more of a chameleon and better at expressing emotion. Kidman for me is too stiff and wooden and I don't respect what she did to her face. If she were a real actress who cared about expressing emotion she wouldn't do that. Charlize Theron is a true natural beauty and underrated actress.
13Wow, Deja vu!
14I happened to see Nicole on Oprah today...and it is CRAZY how little of her face moves...
the amount of botox needed must be amazing!
15I read the script about a month ago and the story is incredibly well written. It focuses a lot on the loss and guilt Charlize's character (Greta) feels (it is because of Greta that Einar first cross dresses) and how Einar quickly finds contentment as a woman.
16I would have expected Charlize to play the dude.
17I'm both intrigued, and turned off at the same time. I'm just not sure.
18I agree that Kidman can probably carry it, she carried "Fur", and that was no easy feat.
Theron seems to pick her roles on whether an Academy nomination might be considered.
Sounds delicious. Charlize will be amazing in the wife role, but the pressure is on Nicole!
19I disagree Jinx. It's Kidman who picks roles for an Oscar nomination. She tells her people to search through scripts that will get her the Oscar nomination. Samantha Morton said it. And she is the one at the Oscars all the time when she isn't even nominated. Theron never goes to the Oscars unless she's nominated. She doesn't care about the spotlight as much as Kidman does. Theron picks roles that challenge her. Before she was seen as eye candy until she proved herself in Monster. I see nothing wrong with her wanting good parts. She wanted a small part in the Road just because she liked the story. It's a very small part but she just wanted to be part of the film. I don't see Kidman doing that. She has to be the star.
Monster was a very small film and Theron thought it was going straight to video not the Oscars. It almost did. It's Nicole Kidman who is the more ambitious one trying to be the biggest female movie star in the world and the top actress all at once. I don't see Charlize trying to do that. She's like any other serious actress just trying to get roles that aren't girlfriend parts. It's Kidman who is doing films like Cold Mountain, The Hours, Australia, Birth, Fur, Nine and not to mention this role, which is far more Oscar-y than the one Charlize will be playing.
20why would Charlize play the dude? Kidman is the one that looks like a tranny with all her plastic surgery. And this is a tranny made to look feminime, so Charlize trying to look feminime is natural because she is a natural beauty. Kidman is not.
21This movie sounds interesting...can't wait to hear more.
22Isn't the woman's name "Gerda Wegener" in real life?
23both of them are Wooooooooo
