Yeah, I know, we were just talking about Grey's Anatomy. But hold on tight, cause this story is crazy.
You know Erica Hahn? Hahn, Callie's confidant and lover, who came in to whip the cardiac surgery department into shape after Preston Burke's departure? Well . . . she's off the show, effective this week.
Brooke Smith told Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello that her character doesn't really get much closure — "My final scene is just me heading to my car." She said Shonda Rhimes seemed upset about the decision, almost like "some decision came down from above." She'd only gotten compliments for the work she was doing, she said.
I'll admit the Hahn/Callie storyline wasn't my favorite, but I think Smith is great and had rooted for her to join the show. This all seems rather fishy to me, somehow, though it certainly sheds new light on Grey's adding both a new bisexual character and a new heart surgeon, no?
Update: Melissa George's character, Sadie, might not be bisexual now, either.

Ah this all makes sense now. Bringing in head of heart surgry to fill Burke's void. Maybe it is because they got veiwer feedback that the whole Hahn storyline wan't very popular?
1I like Brooke Smith but not the character of Hahn. Meh.
2I think this goes back to the same comment that I made on the new Grey's docs post. I think Hahn was a better character before they gave her a front and center storyline. However, the way ABC has kicked her off like this is just ridiculous, though.
3I never bought into the whole callie/hahn thing but this news does seems very abrupt... and i agree now it makes sense that they need another cardio surgeon. hope grey's picks up some steam because it was starting to lose me.
4I think I'm the only person who doesn't care for her, but it's sad that she was so abruptly kicked off the show.
5yeah, i was getting tired of her story line. she's too rough.. was never much of a fan of dr. hahn, its sad to see her kicked off.. but i won't miss her character.
6Terrible decision by ABC, but I'd like to hear from Shonda Rhimes and ABC before forming a strong opinion on this.
Brooke Smith is simply an incredible actress, and she acted her character as well as she could. The problem was her storyline was so poorly written, and Sara Ramirez's role in it was poorly acted and unconvincingly written.
It's sad that this had to happen to Brooke Smith is such a powerful and delightful presence on screen.
I have a sickly feeling about the nature of her termination.
7This has officially turned into a poo storm for ABC.
Not only has Brooke Smith been canned, but according to Kristen Dos Santos' post, all LGBT storylines on Grey's Anatomy are being either sacked or toned down.
WTF is happening with ABC? Is Kevin Walker on Brothers & Sisters going to go hetero? Is Marc on Ugly Betty going to fall in love with Amanda? It sounds like execs over at ABC (the network owned by Disney, btw) are showing their true colors.
I'm done with Grey's Anatomy.

8Sure I wasn't a fan of either the storyline or Hahn, but this is just harsh. She should have gotten a proper write-out.
9'Hahn, Callie's confidant and lover' ... so they made Callie get cheated on, wanting to have a baby and then a lesbian. That's so frickin' ridiculous. What is she next? a serial killer? stupid.
10i really can't stand dr. hahn, so i'm glad she's on the show. however, i too am upset that they just fired her like that
and why are they toning down the lgbt story lines? that's a step backwards
11Probably someone got cold feet about the whole lesbian story. To this day it seems to me that male homosexuals are more accepted on TV then females.
12I don't care that much about her character but I felt she had really opened up and showed a new, vulnerable side to herself in the last episode when she said she was gay. So it seems like a shame to me that she is leaving now.
Um, random? I didn't like the storyline because Hahn and Callie don't have any chemistry, but seriously? I understand if they're reacting to viewer feedback, but if they're doing it because of some de-gaying of the network that's BS.
13Well, Hahn always annoyed me in that pompous, holier then thou, attitude. It seems odd they went the lesbian route to begin with.
maybe it means Callie is back with Steamy!
14huh - that's just really weird what they are doing, and i'm sure that we're going to hear more about it as time goes by. are they afraid to play up the story lines and that's why the characters are going? it's just odd to me that they would be so scared to have these types of plots in the mix...but i guess sometimes you just can't fight with the powers that be.
it'll be interesting to see how things happen with hahn leaving and now the new girl coming in, when we're still so certain that callie is on the fence about things.
15I didn't like the whole Erika + Callie = love ...it wasn't my piece of cake. and greys was getting quite boring. Hopefully it picks up this season.
16I'm a little shocked by this... I thought Hahn was a good addition to the cast. Wonder who will come in now as the best heart guy now?!
17I have to say that I was personally sick of the Hahn/Torres storyline, thank god she is gone. I loved her character, but couldnt care less now.
18Its very clear a case of dropping a gay affair story.Racism is all over Hollywood no matter what people say or pretend.Especialy on gay women. And its another show of how unprofessional everybody has become. This actress was cheated and dropped realy badly.
19how is it racism? are Gays a race now? i wasnt aware.
20i didn't like hahn much at all or her and callie together- they just lacked chemistry i thought. however, they definitely could have gone about this in a better way and at least given her a storyline reason to leave the show. i mean when people hated gizzie, they killed the storyline, not the characters.
21there's noooo way she can leave! this is crazy!!
22Oh HALLELUJAH! I can't stand the character and I did NOT like the relationship between her and Callie. It wasn't believable in any way, shape or form. I am glad to see her go.
23They totally wasted Brooke Smith. She was great as Hahn, and then they gave her a storyline with an actress she had no chemistry with. I'm sorry to see her go.
24Katia, I don't think that's it at ALL. I think it was a non-workable story line.
25I actually didn't mind the storyline and I liked how Dr. Hahn would only warm to Calli and no one else. I liked that their relationship seemed awkward cuz it was both their first times. I like how last episode Hahn was so sure and Calli was confused. I liked all of these issues and how they were explored. However, Shonda's statement to say "Hey, guys, hold on. We still have a Lesbian, its Calli!" Well sure, but if you look at the last episode, Calli was pretty much set up to be Bi. It just seems very very fishy to me too and with the addition of not three, but FOUR new characters, I think I"m done. Heroes is bad enough trying to follow every plot and sub plot, I didn't want that kind of stress from Grey's. And its horribly harsh what they are doing to the actress. To me it just goes to show how they just want to brush LGBT issues under the rug, like it doesn't exist or never happened.
26I don't like this decision at all & I especially don't like the fact that it's so abrupt & there won't be any closure to it! While I didn't necessarily love the whole Callie/Hahn relationship, I did think the storyline was handled realistically from an interesting/different viewpoint from what you'd normally see on TV...and I always liked the Hahn character a lot. She's tough & doesn't take anybody's crap & I really enjoyed her interactions with McSteamy. Brooke Smith is a great actress & I'm sure she'll be missed.
27That's so random! I can't believe they're not even writing her off!
28Glad she's gone, I couldn't stand watching her character.
29I really like Hahn. I thought the storyline with Callie just didn't seem very believable but I am very sad Hahn is leaving
. I think they just took her storyline with Callie way too quickly. They went from being friends to
lovers like woah fast, but I also don't agree with just quickly taking her off the show too...
30I really liked Hahn, but hated the Callie/Erica storyline. It seemed so forced, so unnatural. Brooke Smith did an amazing job with the character; I'll miss her.
31The relationship between Callie and Hahn seemed gratuitous to me. No chemistry and not well written, which is an unfortunate waste of two talented actresses. I can appreciate that they made an effort to humanize the gay issue a few days before gay marriage was being voted on in California, but it just didn't feel well planned or executed.
32I don't really like her,
33but this just seems weird to me.
I thinks she adds a good dynamic.
wow, i'm so suprised that a lot of character don't like Hahn as a character. I think she's actually great, it is the script that's a bit thin about her characterization. and i'm kinda shocked that the lesbian relationship story line bothers so many people. This is important stuff! I always think Grey's, as a dramedy, is great for introducing gay/bisexual characters. Also, there are far more annoying characters than Hahn (yes Mer, I'm talking about you...Izzie, you're next). I mean discovering one's sexuality is big stuff, so I'm sad the ABC suits have to cut her out from the show:(
34wow, I've been so rapped up with the election that I didn't even know about this. Sad, I really liked her character.
35I don't know how to feel about her sudden departure.. was never really on board with her character and I can't get over picturing her at the bottom of the well in the basement with the basket with a bottle of lotion in it..(silence of the lambs).. I am usually able to get past recognizing an actor from a previous movie or show..but for some reason every single time I saw her..I would think about the scene.
My bad.
36I don't like her character. I won't be heartbroken if Erica Hahn leaves, she just doesn't fit in IMO>
37Gays watch Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters and Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money.
38If they want to intimidate their audience, keep on with this tactic--if it truly is a tactic--otherwise I respect the creative flow.
However if ABC is reacting to possible suggestions that they're "too gay" or something and scaling back, then I'm going to have to take offense.
Give us a really juicy gay story line in the next year or so, and I won't be concerned.
Thanks!
I think she was a good addition to the cast. Shame though.
