OK, admittedly this is basically a playlist of songs that have "America" or "American" in them. But it's fun! And it doesn't hurt to hear "America" over and over in some great songs on Election Day!
A few of these tunes will get you to dance a little while waiting for election results, like "American Boy" by Estelle and "Kids in America." You can mature over the course of "American Girl" (Tom Petty) to "American Woman" (Lenny Kravitz), and check out both Jay-Z and Elvis Costello's American gangsters. And of course, we end on one of my favorite songs, "Young Americans" by David Bowie.
What are you listening to today (after you vote!)?

well at least you have some good songs in there
i think that it's going to be a
really tough day come the time when the polls on the east coast start to close. we can only hope that things will turn out to be OK for the US. we might need more upbeat music to keep us
going!
1Love James Brown.
2very eclectic. awesome
3I made my election day playlist last night!
On it is Stars' "Soft Revolution" from Set Yourself on Fire. The band dedicated this song to Obama when they played it for their set at Coachella this year:
Also on is:
4Tegan & Sara - "Freedom"
Sonic Youth's "Teen Age Riot"
Ben Folds Five's "Army"
Radiohead's "Sit Down, Stand Up"
Radiohead's "Idioteque"
Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-changin'"
what about "I'm Afraid of Americans" by David Bowie?
5Listened to Twista's "Hopeful" on the way to the polls, Mr. Fingers' "Can You Feel It (Martin Luther King Mix)" while in line and Madonna's "4 Minutes" on the way out.
6Any respect I had for Gym Class Heroes has instantly died. I had no idea they sampled this "Breakfast in America" song for Cupid's Chokehold! Their follow up single "Clothes Off" was ALSO based around a huge sample.
7No respect for you!
Also, vote, vote, vote, get out the vote!!!
What about "Proud to be an American" and "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy".
8Oh, wait...we want to seem "cool".
billyart101 — It's not about being "cool," these are the songs that I wanted to put on the playlist. They're songs that I like, it's not a comprehensive catalog of all songs ever written about America.
9Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief"...hopefully it won't happen again
