Does it get much better than a Gossip Girl episode mostly centered around Chuck? I think not. The guy is entertaining, especially when he's sparring with Blair. This week, the two of them play a little seduce-and-destroy game that reminded me of Cruel Intentions, only to find that messing with other innocent, well intentioned people only seems to exacerbate their own insecurities.

Yes, in the world of GG, it's not easy being a filthy rich kid. In addition to the Chuck and Blair angst, this episode also reveals the family stress Serena and Eric have endured over the years and poor Nate's sad spiral downward as his family collapses into financial ruin. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.
- First and foremost, let's talk about Vanessa saving the speakeasy. For someone who hates to interact with Dan's wealthy schoolmates, it was strange that she'd force her way onto campus to hand out fliers. Really? There's nowhere else you could hand out fliers?
- Also, why would Vanessa head straight over to Blair and decide to blackmail her with video footage of the Duke that no one would really care about? Vanessa is supposed to be above all that and dismayed by the dirty tricks these rich kids play — so why would she herself blackmail anyone? And why mess with Blair? ("I own you now.") That's just insane.
- Eric has a boyfriend! That's all I really have to say about that.
- Blair and her girl squad hold a "hearing" for an underclassman who's committed the terrible crime of wearing leggings. While seeing the poor girl in tears while the others viciously tear into her was disturbing, I have to say I was excited to see someone take a stand against those which are not pants.
- Bart's back in the picture, big time, and Serena is not having any of it. When he hints that her image might hurt his business, she puts on a pretty skimpy dress, saunters by him, and tells him that she's headed "anywhere we can find some paparazzi" and then exclaims, "Oh! I forgot to put on underwear."
- Sometimes Chuck and Blair are cute/sexy together. But last night, I found myself squirming when they interacted. Like when Blair first tells him to have sex with Vanessa and his reward will be to have sex with her. Ew. That's a lot of swapping sex for deeds. Plus Blair basically taunts Chuck by reminding him he has "mechanical problems." Yuck.
- I love when Jenny and Rufus point out to Dan that he never really hangs out with guys. And he proves them wrong with a call to his new bff Nate and throws in a lot of "Sweet"s and "Bro!"s and "I got my boy waiting for me"s.
- I also liked how cute Dan gets while explaining to Jenny the fun of soccer: "So then the ball came to me. And he kicked it to another guy and then he kicked it to another guy!"
- So Vanessa sees the good in Chuck, and Chuck acts nicer when anyone makes him feel human. Which means Bart must enter the picture and cut him down to size with a scathing line or two about what a colossal disappointment he is. Getting a little predictable, no?
- And then things get really nonsensical: Blair tells Vanessa it was all a game when she thinks Chuck likes Vanessa or something . . . and then declares Chuck the winner and tells him to "claim your prize," which gives way to another cringe-worthy Chuck and Blair sex scene with odd stop-motion cinematography.
- Chuck then flips the script, asking Blair to say those three little words — which she vows never to say to the likes of Chuck Bass.
- Meanwhile, at the housewarming, Serena realizes Lily, not Bart, is responsible for all the new house rules and goes on a rampage against her mom. She tells the press she once wanted snow for Christmas, so it was a good thing one of Lily's exes left "blow" all over the shinny surfaces. She later apologizes during a sweet family moment with Bart ("I’m sorry I embarrassed you in front of a national magazine").

I really liked the little truce on the steps between Serena and Dan, and it's hilarious and sweet that the Humphrey family has taken Nate in (where's his mom again? Is she really in the Hamptons?). I don't know how I feel about Blair and Chuck, though. I like them maneuvering around each other, but the sex games stuff is weird, and right now they don't even seem to like each other. What do you think?

They like each other. But i don't see Blair chasing Chuck like he did to her. But let's wait and see.
I think everything regarding Nate kinda boring, as usual. I don't even feel bad about him. But i think it's all Chase's fault haha
1i almost died laughing when serena said that underwear line in the elevator!!!!
haha i was also kind of into the blair/chuck sex game thing. it didnt seem uncomfortable for me to watch at all. of course i LOVED the cruel intentions movie, so maybe thats why
2ARGH! I wrote a long post about Blair&Chuck and their feelings and it dissapeared. So in few words - they love each other, just got stuck in their games and they are who they are due to their loveless upbringing. But they are made for each other and inevitable - as Chuck said.
3I laughed so loudly when the girl on the steps was crying "I didn't know" and Blair snaps "that tights aren't PANTS?!" . Brilliant.
4And we found out quite interesting things about VanderWoodsen family - like their brief conversion to Islam and the fact that kids' ringtone for Lily is "Since you've been gone".
And what cracks me up is the fact that Eric seems like the most mature of them.
5Love how Chuck and Blaire matched =]
Am I the only one who thinks Vanessa is really ugly?
6I loved this epi, I am totally starting to see the cuteness in Dan again, awww He has a BOYfriend now. I thought Nate looked so cute when he was smiling in the last scene at Dan;s house. It was prefect...he didnt have anylines he just stood there and looked pretty
7Does anyone notice Blair gets rejected for sex alot, first Nate, The Lord and now Chuck??
I loved the chuck and Blair scenes (I love cruel intention), im glad chuck flipped the switch on her, its about time she chased him.
can;t wait to see how that will play out.
Oh also, I love Eric! He's so funny and sweet!
8and I think Jessica Szohr is beautiful
9Jessica is very pretty but is a terrible actress + her character is very annoying.
10Papaver** right on!!!!!! Jessica is pretty but I hate Vanessa
11The Archibald mansion's seized, Nate's been sleeping on the floor, there's no electricity, and mom's MIA. And he's out treating Dan to a bottled water. Huh? He still got some money to burn, I guess? Anyhow, I still really like Nate. Hehee. They better give him something great to do to get rid of the bad taste that the "Duchess experience" left. Gross.
I agree wytang, Nate looked so cute when he returned to Dan's house. I wonder how his staying there would play out.
Also Nate's house was like the hot place of the moment. Serena, Dan and Bart had a bit of a get together there, no? Didn't anyone think it was weird that Bart knew where to find S?
12Yes I agree...Jessica is gorgeous but her character is a little annoying.
I thought the move Chuck pulled was Brilliant...I would acutally liek to see maybe a Chuck and Vanessa pairing..that might acutally be intresting.
13I'm getting a gay vibe from the Nate-Dan relationship. Just sayin'. You can have good guy friends, but it was weird how they were so attached at the hip.
The Blair & Chuck scheme reminded me of Dangerous Liasions, which is what Cruel Intentions is based on. I think they even referenced that their scheme reminded them of something...I'll have to re-watch this episode later.
14Now that I think about it, I don't remember Vanessa laying down on a bed at the party. When did she do that (like in the picture above)?
15Why do they have to make Vanessa so naive , I mean honestly and doesn't she know anyone else. Otherwise show was pretty good...
16There was a lot of fun stuff in the episode-
1) For once I really liked the Humphery family interaction- the whole soccer thing, Jenny had the rolling of the eyes little sister thing dead on. And the pointing out how Dan has no male friends was really funny, as was his phone call with Nate.
2) wow, it's really easy to totally break into government seized mansions on the upper east side. Dan just like walked right in. Thought his cluelessness over how Nate would feel about being a Humphrey charity project was sweet and totally Dan-like. But I honestly have to say, I found the end touching- Nate is a DORK, not the sharpest pencil in the box. Now that he isn't uber-rich, he doesn't have as much going for him with the cool kids, except his niceness, and we all can see how that can be a drawback with the rich and famous. The Humphrey household, despite its issues, really IS the best family background Nate could have to look after him right now. It was cool how they all didn't make a big deal about it, and Rufus scored major points for not hesitating to say, " You need to have this kid come here and stay."
3)Chuck/Blair/VANESSA- there's a triangle you never thought would stand! Ok, Vanessa just needs to learn that playing nasty games with the Blairs of the world is not her thing. Not because she is out-classed socially, but because it just ISN'T HER THING. That said, I like seeing the personality side of Chuck. I actually felt like once Chuck got into the bar he thought hanging out with the old dude and Vanessa was cool. He may have even been surprised at himself for feeling that way, but there it is.
4) I really liked it when Chuck called Blair out on collateral damage- Chuck doesn't mind destroying and upsetting people, but it has to have a reason. Blair is just being sort of mindlessly petty and mean. The whole sex angle even- amazingly- seemed to ick Chuck out slighty.
5) I never looked at it like this, but Blair IS constantly being rejected sexually. No wonder she is such a messed up bundle of nerves. Seriously, if anyone needed a lifeguard earlier this season, it was her, not Serena. But Blair's insecurities are interesting, because she guards herself so well. And her lingerie was GORGEOUS!
6)Bart Bass really does seem to be trying, in his own totally self centered, inept way, to be a 'family man'. But the whole chastising of Chuck thing does seem to be getting a little silly. I mean, you would let your son keep a burlesque club, but not a bar in a landmarked building?? Bart is filled with misdirected... not anger, but irritation, and he takes most of it out on Chucak, because Chuck is always still there. Lily might pack up and divorce him and he knows it, so he can't get too snippy with her.
7)Eric has a boyfriend! SQUEEEEE!!! Seriously, I also loved how Serena and Vanessa were just immediately, 'how did you meet? etc.' it was so nice and open and happy for Eric. And his BF looks all arty and deep and listens to the Eels without being depressive.
8)I actually thought Vanessa looked ok this episode. Serena was not as all-important as she's been on other episodes lately, and that was sort of nice. She did better this week as an 'ensemble' cast member than she has previously.
9) I thought the parallel between the end of the 'Humphrey family' evening - ice cream, offering Nate a place to stay, Scattagories, Hits of the 80s Fake Book was awesome in comparison with the Bass/VanderWoodsen family time: sending away the paparazzi, eating the leftover tiramisu or whatever it was and drinking the leftover champagne while talking about your mother's ex-es and trips overseas and apologizing for embarrassing the family in a national news publication. Even Eric ( who is sort of the youthful sage of the show) chuckled right along with his mom and Serena and Bart even cracked a smile. To give Bart and Lily credit, I am sure if they knew what was up with Nate, they would both immediately have offered him house room. But Nate is still classist enough not to want his 'real' people, the rich, to know what's up. He is safe at the Humphrey's , hiding out. All is almost right with the world.
17Note- Enchanted One, I also noticed that! I thought Dan was a schmuck for not saying " Here. let me get those product-placement Vitamin Waters, Nate!" but that might have been tipping his hand too early with the plan to 'rescue' Nate, I guess.
18"Don't forget that weekend with Sarkozy. You made us go to Euro Disney." - That line made me LOL.
19Aghhh, I hate Serena!!!! Poor little rich girl, you have to stay in on a school night, I feel so very sorry for you. What a freakin' hardship, now go act like a brat so that you resume your busy schedule at all the newest name-drop-worthy clubs.
Okay, I feel better now. Anyway, I can't even say how happy I am that leggings finally got their due on a show. They are not pants, and they never will be, no matter how hard Lohan campaigns for a change in their status.
Oh, and I'm with you on the Chuck/Blair ew factor. I want them to go back to cutely snarky. But yay for more Chuck!
20I think it's kinda ironic Serena is giving Bart such a hard time. As far as i remember, Lilly married Bart because Serena didn't want her with Rufus and asked her to marry him. Am i wrong?
21I HATED HATED HATED HATED HATED this episode. IN general I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE vanessa and she's just the most annoying character on the show. why are oyu so stupid chuck!
22Even of the plot awkwardness, I thought the episode really showed how much more interesting the whole series is when there's more Chuck and Blair, and less Serena/Dan/Nate/Jenny drama. Just sayin'. And it also showed that Vanessa is kind of useless character imo; she's only here to help other characters take the front stage.
I also agree the whole bet thing was way too EEEEEWWWW. For some reason I felt the "sexual tension" the plot was trying to create didn't work out at all until the very last scene (even though the "if you thought that was long, you have no idea what you're in for" line almost made me DIE from laughing too hard!). Maybe the writers should have prepared that a bit better than suddenly jumping back on the Chuck/Blair storyline after plenty of episodes where that was completely in the background.
I was glad to see Eric back; his character is super cute and it's weirdly refreshing to hear about a happy kid who's not trying to mess up others.
And the Dan/Nate thing? Sadly I couldn't care less. I just want more Blair sassyness.
Oh, btw... http://tightsarenotpants.com/
23This is great!
24It seems to me like the writers wanted to have some Blair/Chuck interaction and came up with this episode and threw Vanessa in where ever it was convenient. I liked it though. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the show ventured down the Vanessa/Chuck path, but they were more like friends than anything else. (Then again, it IS gossip girl.)
The rest of the episode was fine, but I didn't care much for it. Especially Serena's whole deal. I understand where she's coming from, but I mean, it's nothing new. Again, Eric always handles the situation wayyy better than Serena does.
25Why is Vanessa even there? We already have a mumbling bore with no personality and her name is What's herface, thank you very much!
26We just finished reading "Les Liaisons dangereuses" (Dangerous Liaisons) in my French class and the Blair/Chuck storyline fits the book perfectly! With Blair as Madame de Merteuil (the evil plotter) and Chuck as la Vicomte de Valmonte (who agrees to corrupt the naive Cecile in exchange to sleep with Merteuil). How uncanny! And as a former soccer player, I liked how Dan now plays. Oh, and you gotta love how Serena blew up in front of the reporter. Good episode
27OMFG! First off I don't know where to start so I'll start with the one that didn't appeal to me most. Serena! She managed to be a bratty little rich girl in this episode. Who would get so mad because they were suddenly told they were gonna have a curfew. Honestly? Aren't most of Americas teenagers brought up to have curfews, even the rich ones? And that dress! It barely covered her picachu.
28Dan's scenes were pretty funny. I thought it was cute how he tried to defend the fact that he's had guy friends. I also liked that he wanted to help Nate. Nate is as Gossip Girl said, "Our poor little Nate, he's poor!" That was really funny, but I felt bad for him too.
Vanessa, Blair, and Chuck. First off, I try not to be mean to Vanessa's character, but its so hard. They try to make it look like she gets their world and she can just suddently understand who they are, but she can't. She doesn't even understand herself. To blackmail someone when you're supposedly above it, is stupid, and she didn't even have enough focus. If it was real blackmail, she'd have made copies. And I really don't think Chuck will see anything in her. And omg Chuck! He should have just said those 3 little words and 8 little letters when she asked him too. It would have made me less angry. And Blair, she should just admit her feelings for him, he makes her smile without even being there, and that's a lot for someone you will never love supposedly. BTW! That scene was so hot and heavy, but he just had to speak. I mean he did have a right because she wanted the same from him. Oh well, I guess this game of cat and mouse proceeds.
Oh I also saw the whole Cruel Intentions thing. Sex is a bribe for as long as we maintain it. I think they tried to reference it when Gossip Girl said, "We've all seen this story before, but in the end everyone died." But I'm not sure because only Sebastian died in the end.
29Not a fan of Vanessa. She's weird looking. I saw her on Rachel Ray and she looked really pretty then on Gossip Girl, I never find her pretty. I think it's the hair. She looks so much better when her hair is straight. And it didn't fit her character that she would blackmail Blair. The whole Lord Marcus thing got screwed up in the first place by V. If she hadn't meddled and left it to Blair - Nate wouldn't be losing his house. V needs to go. Her character adds nothing and is completely boring.
30Where's Serena's biological dad??
I love the relationship between Blair and Chuck. It's hott.
31i think jessica szohr is absolutely beautiful, but i've never been happy with her character. i thought they were bringing her in to cause problems with dan and serena, but that lasted about three seconds and for some reason she is still hanging around. i liked the idea of vanesse and nate, but then they just killed it before it got off the ground. if they're not going to do anything else with her, they might as well dump the character because her plot-line this episode was pretty weak.
with the blair and chuck stuff... i agree it was kind of awkward and not that well done earlier in the episode, but i really enjoyed how chuck showed more sensitive side of himself at the end. how he didn't want to hurt vanessa for no reason and wanted to be more than just blair's play thing. even if he can't say it, he obviously feels very strongly about blair, and i'm kind of glad he stood up for himself about the double standard she was pulling. as hot as it is to see chuck persue blair, it might be some nice comedic relief to see it the other way around. though, i'm not sure if i can imagine blair being the one to do the chasing. i'd like to see how this pans out because really i think they're absolutely perfecr for each other.
32When Vanessa was first introduced I thought she would pine for Dan for a while and then find someone outside of the GG circle. I just don't see her character getting involved with Nate and now maybe Chuck?? Just don't see it. I understand why she is the author's least favorite character.
33I agree wit Serenavallentine about Vanessa. They introduce her, have no point for her so she's just around to piss of the viewers, how cqan you be so 'smart' and then so naive later on, the fact that her personality switches for the plot bothers me so much because all she does it cause drama and it doesn't even affect her.
Am I the only one who took note of the fact that when the Vanderwoodsen-Bass's were having their 'bonding family moment' a crucial member of the Bass family was missing? I know he went to love it up with Blair, but considdering how they were going on about family I'm pretty sure it was a blatant move to make Chuck seem like the outsider. Or I'm overanalyzing because insecure Chuck makes my heart squeal, lol, and nothing will rile up that insecurity like your father being a father to someone else's kids.
Dan and Nate, eh, I agree that Dan's explanation about soccer and proving he had guy friends was cute, but everything else was ridiculous. LOVE the fact that they had a padlock on teh seized house but two highschool kids managed to get in anyway. If you're going to put on a padlock *lock it*.
34It's hilarious that Cecily (forgot her last name), the author, doesn't like Vanessa.
35just a thought about vanessa....and i could be totally wrong... but maybe they had more intentions for plot development last season and then the writers strike got in the way? (i honestly didn't watch the first season until recently when my friend lent me their boxset) i know a lot of shows had to re-boot and either completely change the plot or just take out a lot of story to finish up their seasons.
if that's the case though, i would hope they could think up something better for her this season!
36First of all: Loved the way Chuck rejected Blair.
2. There must be something with this Wanessa character soon. Now she is just plain boring like little Jenny and Nate.
3. Where is Erics and Serenas father?
37hahahahahaha theres a website!!!!! hilarious.
38I think the actress that plays Vanessa is SO STUNNING.
39And they did directly allude to this episode being loosely based on Cruel Intentions. Gossip Girl was all, "I know we've heard this story before, and everyone ended up dead," which is an exaggeration because it was just Sebastian, but regardless, that was intentional.
40ok well there WAS a comment about a website, regarding tights. im not crazy lol.
41I love Chuck. And, as much as I love evil, manipulative Chuck (and man I DO love him!), it's nice to see an insecure, sad Chuck. Not that I would want that all the time, but a nice break in the character for sure.
42That being said, I do not want him with Vanessa. Can't they just be friends to prove that Chuck isn't singularly obsessed with sex and that Vanessa can push the chip off her shoulder and appreciate the wealth?
Blake Lively is a terrible actress, but I like her as Serena despite that.
Love Blair! Hope she chases Chuck - in a tasteful way.
Last scene with Nate coming to Dan's house finally made me notice that Chace Crawford IS actually cute. The first time I've ever thought that!
Was that the German Klaus or the Danish Claus? I loved the Van der Woodsen family plotline lastnight - especially the white christmas line. Does anyone know where Serena and Eric's father is? I always assumed he was dead for some reason.
The need to back off the Chuck and Blair storyline for a couple episodes. They are my favorite couple and last night was just icky. I hope Blair's bra is going to be on CelebStyle though because it was so pretty!
Enjoying Dan having a non whiny plotline. Plus he's gone to this school for four years is this really the first guy friend he's ever had?
43well i think that this show is a roller coaster. it's not consistently wowing me - some weeks it's good and others it's bad. this week was better than last, and i kind of like to see the games they play - it's so real to an extent but a little out of reality in others.
44P.S How spot on is the new Chuck promo set to Womanizer? I'd take him over any of the lames on that show.
45i liked this episode but you're right, some of the blair/chuck parts were cringey. i am so not liking dan humpfrey anymore.
