Fans of Avenue Q, The Dark Crystal, and the general concept of inappropriate things coming from the mouths of puppets may want to pay special attention to this news: The Jim Henson Co. is working on a film noir comedy-slash-murder mystery movie called The Happytime Murders.
In the world of The Happytime Murders, puppets and humans co-exist together, but puppets are viewed as second-class citizens. According to the Hollywood Reporter:
When the puppet cast of an '80s children's TV show called The Happytime Gang begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet — with a drinking problem, no less — takes on the case.
A drunken, disgraced private eye . . . puppet? Investigating the tragic murders of other puppets? Sign. Me. Up.
Even better, according to the Reporter, there are tons of awesome influences at work for this project, from Avenue Q to LA Confidential to Pulp Fiction. Jim Henson's son Brian is signed up to direct.
There's been lots of cool Muppet-related news lately, but this just might be my favorite. What do you all think? Anyone else share my enthusiasm for foul-mouthed puppets?

I'm sure my roommate and his girlfriend will love this. They've been watching The Muppet Show DVDs.
1I definitely want to see this!
2I'd love to see this, muppets are some kind of crazy obsession of mine.
3Reminds me of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." I'll definitely see this!
4how EXCITING! i love avenue Q's concept of puppets and people, and this "second class citizens" idea is awesome.
5Is it just me or does this have a little tinge of of that episode on the Angel tv show called Smile Time? There are some foulmouthed demonic puppets, controlling kids with subliminally planted messages in their puppet tv show and then Angel becomes a vampire puppet and beats the crap out of Spike, lol. Anyone? Maybe it's just geeky ol' me then, lol...
6I love Avenue Q; if this is anything like it, count me in!
7never saw avenue Q but I LOVE the Dark Crystal! I think I need to watch it today!
8i'm totally loving the thought about this - i think that it would be really cool to see something like this come from the muppets. i'd definitely see it.
9I am SO IN! I love the Muppets and irreverence, so this should be perfect.
10This sounds AWESOME! Awww it makes me want to watch Muppets Take Manhattan!
11This sounds AWESOME!! If it turns out even an ounce as good as Avenue Q I'll be happy. I reckon this won't be a musical film noir!
12Sounds like Roger Rabbit meets Greg the Bunny. I'd check it out.
13Whiplash, it made think of Who Framed Roger Rabbit too! I this movie will be good, I love the Muppets and irrevent comedy is great too.
14I want to see it too!
15It may not count as a "puppet" movie... But why no mention of TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE - Is it because it's from the guys who bring us "Southpark", & is therefore rather crude? After all, I can't look at puppets the way I used to without thinking of Team America.
I don't know what Avenue Q is... I did see Roger Rabbit (pretty sure it was animated & had no puppets) years ago; Fraggle Rock to me as a kid was as good as the Muppets.
Oh well, I love film noir - Especially murder mysteries! Bogart did 'em best. But I also love the "Thin Man" series, starring William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick & Nora Charles. If you haven't seen them, I suggest you give them a look-see.
16ooo, I want to see that. :]
