In the most intriguing movie news of the day, Peter Jackson has co-written a screenplay adaptation of Alice Sebold's heart-wrenching novel The Lovely Bones and is looking for a studio to back the project. The mastermind behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the latest King Kong remake has long had The Lovely Bones in mind, according to Variety:
Jackson scooped up the film rights to "Bones" from FilmFour in 2004. (FilmFour is still a partner on the project.) Since then, the filmmaker has insisted that "Bones" would be his next directing project after "King Kong."
It seems like a huge leap to go from such grandiose fantastical box office sweepers like LOTR series to a quiet family drama about the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. The story has clearly struck a chord in him which makes me intensely curious to see what Jackson will do with this. I think it actually might turn out to be great.

Wow, that is really interesting news. It definitely seems incongruous with LOTR, but anyone who has seen Heavenly Creatures knows that Jackson can probably handle this book handsomely.
1I'm sure for anyone who has seen Jackson's masterful and disturbing "Heavenly Creatures," seeing him as the director of "The Lovely Bones" is not remotely a stretch. If anything, it's a thrill!
2This was a fantastic book, and since those turd burglars at New Line won't give him The Hobbit I'd like to see how he handles this story instead.
3Interesting.
4For some reason, I thought this films was already in the making, in the sense it was being filmed.
I loved "The Lovely Bones" and I agree with Bella and Knox that this shouldn't be too hard for him after Heavenly Creatures.
5Although I am always a bit weary of books I love being made into movies no matter who is directing! I hope they are able to stay true to the book.
I LOVE Heavenly Creatures. Didn't realize that Peter Jackson directed it--I've always thought of it as my first Kate Winslet movie.
LilPeaPod, hopefully we won't have to worry about Jackson's interpretation. I think he has a knack for translating details of things vividly imagined to the big screen.
6I loved "The Lovely Bones" too - I couldn't put the book down. The writing was compelling and the character is so unique. Definitely a great book and can't wait to see how he translates it into a film.
7Me too, SU! I will back him!! Haha.. Can't wait to see if this one comes to fruition!
8I'm interested in seeing how they'll turn this book into a movie.
9Personally, I did not care for this book at all and actually think it may adapt better as a film.
10I loved this book and could not put it down. I too am weary of books, especially the ones I love, being made into movies. They're usually never as good.
