After a brief vice-presidential interlude, we return to Seattle Grace this week only to find it in a shambles. None of the Chief's recommitments to teaching really matter when the ceiling is literally crumbling all around you, right? Frankly, as far as Grey's Anatomy tragedies go, a little flooding doesn't really rate. But this episode still had some good moments that forced our residents to reevaluate where they've ended up, so to talk about it, just read more.
Now that Meredith and Derek are together-together, I suppose we can get used to a whole lot of domestic problems like this week's: Derek's moving in, so he assumes Izzie and Alex are moving out. Granted, it's understandable Derek would want some privacy with Mere while the McDream Mansion is being built; the man's been living in a trailer in the woods, so moving into a college-like housing situation probably isn't ideal. Imperfect as they are, Meredith's roommates are the closest things she's got to family, and it was good to see her stand up for them. But that's not before Alex shoots down Izzie's idea of them getting a place together and Cristina steals Izzie's perfect apartment out from under her nose.
Seriously. "You should have been more clear?" Sometimes I think Cristina lacks a soul.
Meanwhile, Alex spends the episode with a man who believes he's a walking dark cloud, a medical Charlie Brown who keeps having things go wrong. Unsurprisingly, he takes the brunt of the flood — literally in the gut — when the ceiling collapses in the middle of his surgery. That, however, leads the team to find and remove an unexpected tumor, saving the man from future misery and convincing him it's time to say hello to that cute girl at the supermarket. That prompts Alex to decide it's time to say hello to that cute girl he lives with, but even at her most vulnerable "why do I have no person?" moment, Izzie doesn't fall for it. Yet.
Some other thoughts:
- I have decided that if I could have a superpower, it would be a photographic memory. It's the one thing that makes Lexie awesome ("Dude, a Lexipedia"), and she uses it to propose a surgical technique that could end a man's seven years of constant pain. But then she declines Mark's offer to scrub in on the surgery because she's helping George, which is still the biggest problem with Lexie.
- Meanwhile, it's George's day to retake the intern test, which is a little hard when water keeps dripping all over your No. 2 pencils. It was good of the Chief to offer to stay with him and proctor the test.
- Speaking of the Chief, when is he going to learn that listening to Bailey is always the right decision?
- I loved Cristina's "no, really, punch me" pain tolerance test — and how Alex takes it as an invitation to slap anyone he sees. That felt old-school.
- Meredith's patient depressed the heck out of me. It's bad enough that she's dying; it's worse that she's so desperate for human interaction that listening to Meredith's whining is a relief.
- Just a few small developments on the Callie-Erica front, mostly that Mark won't stop teasing them and that I don't like Callie's super-straight hair.
- Line of the night for me: "What would you prefer, Meredith, chocolate cake, or an STD?"
What did you all think? Happy the roommates are staying? Glad Callie threw something at Mark's head? Frankly, any episode where someone throws something at Mark is pretty OK in my book.

Question where the heck was my Kevin McKidd?
This episode was "meh"
1I liked this episode a lot, but I'm dying for some Kevin McKidd action too. Also, Mark and Lexie? Maybe? It's a better pairing than her and George.
2mark needs to keep it in his pants for awhile
3I agree with CaterpillarGirl.. This episode was pretty boring in comparison to some of the episodes in the past. However, it is just the seasons beginnings so hopefully things start to look up and get a bit better.
4Mark & Lexie.. agreed is far better than Lexie & George. But I love George, so I'm partial to him.
5I'm really digging the Izzie/Karev thing going on. Really. Love it. Mark & Lexie... fo sho... but give it some time before jumping into it. Love that the roommates are staying.
6Great recap, Buzz. Love the description of Alex's patient as being "a medical Charlie Brown." Thanks for making me smile! Last night's episode was uneven, but overall, I enjoyed watching the interplay between and among the doctors, especially Alex and Izzie. She's a much stronger character this season and I find that I'm not as annoyed with her as I was last. Bailey and Christina, as always, steal the show for me. Chandra Wilson is just simply the best.
7I love Mark and Callie's relationship. I don't know why, it just always seems so perfect. Not as a couple, obviously (even though Callie/Erica still seems a little... weird). And I completely agree that Callie + straight hair = nono.
Izzie + Alex =
8Oops, comment got cut off. Haha.
As I was saying, Izzie + Alex = ♥
Actually, anything Alex = ♥.
It was a pretty good episode.
9This episode was better...
The shrink/psychiatrist was kind of creepy in the beginning... Why so serious? I don't really like her...
Honestly, I didn't think Izzy was clear to Christina. I thought she was giving her the apartment.
What happened to Izzy and George? George was her person. I'm probably blanking out about something that happened last season. Are they still recovering from their relationship?
I actually cried during this episode... for Meredith's patient.
10Miss McArmy for sure
Izzy and Alex always seemd like a good pairing...I loved them in season
1..while things lasted.
George is just so whimpy as a character I find it hard for of the girls even Lexie to dig him.
Lexie and Mark...YAY!
11I just love Grey's Anatomy. My favorite part of this episode was when Karev was telling the patient the outcome of the surgery. You expected it to be bad and then it wasn't. Plus the whole "saying hello" thing was so sweet.
12i liked this episode too. i laugh i cried i enjoyed it. I cried when the man with the 7 year pain was telling Christina why he was relived. I think that was one of my fav moments. I think in some ways i can relate to Christina when she says she does not feel pain. I think i have a High pain tolerance its all bout the mind. I hope that Alex sees that there is nothing wrong with being with Izzy. Cant wait to see what happens next week!
13Am I the only one who doesn't find Alex attractive? Yuck!
I liked this episode for the most part. It seems better than last season so far.
14Where did the Army hunk go!! And yeah some Lexie and Mark action is much better than Lexie and George.
15Lexie and Mark are gonna get it on, I can tell. But I love Alex...even when he's being a huge jackass. I dont think I ever gave up on Alex + IZzie. Maybe he'll make her less annoying.
16I liked the episode, but we all know I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to TV. LOL
I think though that Callie should have lit into Mark about his teasing. I get that she talks to him and I'm fine with that, but she should have said "I'm going to quit telling you things if you're going to turn around and use them against me" because essentially that's what he did, he put her in the middle between him and Erica. Bad move for a supposed "friend". And Erica's line about "I think I don't like him because he's seen you naked" made me cringe. I just don't get any chemistry between those two.
I thought about a Lexi/Mark pairing too, but I don't think it would work. I think the reason for seeing them is that Mark is beginning to be everyone's "safe" guy, the one they talk to. First was Mer last season, now Callie and Lexi, just watch, it'll be someone else next week.
I agree about the Chief. Bailey is the smartest person IN That hospital, and her story about "poop water" (Still laughing about that) should have prompted action. When's he gonna learn that if Bailey says JUMP you don't question, you just jump! LOL
Overall, I thought this was (In some places) back to the fun and goofy grey's. The whole slapping thing was definitely old school.
17That was a LAME episode...
18I thought it was a decent episode. The Lexie skipping out on scrubbing in made me cringe, and haus I agree with you about the lack of chemistry between Callie and Erica.
I'm also hoping for Alex's "black wifebeater of hotness" to make its triumphant return.
Coupled with more Kevin McKidd, that will definitely make this season better.
19I was SO mad at Christina....that was really harsh. She knew Izzy was maybe getting kicked out, so why Izzy "give" her the apartment? I agree with Buzz, sometimes she has no soul! And she should honestly be more accepting of her interns already...it's getting old.
20This episode was just boring...I barely paid attention to it.
I missed Kevin McKidd too!
Am I the only person who doesn't like Alex and Izzie together? Guess so.
21Izzie wasn't clear at all with Cristina
22californiagirlx7, you are not alone. I HATE Alex and Izzie together. Mustly because i don't like Alex. I'm so tired of this "bad guy, but deep down he has a good heart" routine.
23My favorite line of the night was when Christina went to talk to Meredith's shrink....and the shrink called her out on her own issues. "....You are a TERRIBLE shrink!" I laughed out loud at that one.
24Shrink line was awesome I totally agree. Seriously, Alex and Izzie, just make it happen already!!! Has anyone seen a sneak peek for next week?
25I really felt bad for Alex and Izzie. I was totally on Meredith's side in the roommate thing, though. Maybe if you agree to move in with someone, you should discuss the roommates' status before you just decide to kick them out without talking to them about it. So not cool. And it's not like everyone has millions of dollars like and can just go somewhere else at the drop of a hat.
Rioja I agree with you that Alex and Izzie just get together already!
26What about Lexi and Mark?
Oh, I think there's chemistry between Callie and Erica. I'm glad that a show--any show-- has finally decided to go with chemistry and let that inform a storyline regardless of the gender-makeup of the pairing. The way they look at each other is pretty hot. I really like Sara Ramirez's ability to have Callie be totally terrified, and then realize it's Erica, and have Callie soften right there and stop freaking out. And the Erica-watching-Callie scene was awesome! You could totally see Erica ready to be hurt when Callie walked into their date and was clearly freaking out. And then how happy she was to be just like, don't worry, let's slow down, and how relieved and happy Callie was, too!
For Alex and Izzie, I did want them to get together, but he's been such an a-hole. But after his confession in the bar, I think, maybe okay, but he's kind of emotionally abusive (whatever his personal pain and reasons), and he has got to deal with that before he and Izzie get into something, or it will be a REALLY unhealthy relationship.
And the little side-story of Yang in the derm office was awesome! I love her!!
