Well, I've been expecting this news ever since the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland project was announced: Helena Bonham Carter will star as the Red Queen in Burton's fantastical tale. The surprising part (but not in a bad way) is the other new addition to the cast: Anne Hathaway. The Hollywood Reporter includes these details:
Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, "Off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.
Of course Helena Bonham Carter fits right into this project, and I think the Hathaway choice is something of a pleasant surprise. What do you think?
In addition to these two queens, we've got our Alice (Mia Wasikowska), a Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and one man to play both Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I wonder who's next?

Just Cavalli
D&G
Sonia Rykiel
Yay I'm so glad Helena is going to play the Red Queen! Anne Hathaway seems like an odd choice, but she will probably do well in this role.
I'm glad that this film seems to stay true to the book more than Disney's original Alice in Wonderland, just like how Tim Burton adapted Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to be more like the book version.
1I cannot wait for this movie!
2Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter attached to a Time Burton project? What a surprise! ^_^
I typically like Tim Burton's take on things, so this should be fun. I'm definitely watching!
3I'm so excited! I love Alice in Wonderland. I can't wait to see what Tim Burton will do, I heard it might be a lot of cg type stuff (I hope not). I like his dark edge, this should be very interesting.
4Helena is perfect for The Red Queen. Johnny is perfect for the Mad Hatter. It's all perfect!
5HBC is so perfect for the Red Queen! She does the loopy, kinda crazy people so well.
6How about Ricky Gervis as the White Rabbit? He's the first name that popped into my head.
7@ineedclarity - that sounds perfect! lol, I never would have thought of him on my own, but now I'm hoping they'll cast him.
8I love the idea of Helena and Anne and Depp but Mia Wasikowska as Alice? umm...IDTS..Alice was such a beautiful character in the Disney classic film. They should of found another actress to play that role.
9hehe as soon as you found out that Tim Burton was directing you HAD to know that Helena would play the queen.
10helena was a dead give away. if she WASN'T in the movie I would be extremely surprised. anne will be a very interesting addition to this. I can't wait!
11"Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter attached to a Time Burton project? What a surprise! ^_^ "
Rightly said. (Err, typed.) But they are a good match, that group. I don't mind it.
But how many of us were making bets that HBC would be the red queen? Is there any OTHER actress you can instantly imagine in that role?
12Oh, and Helena looks *gorgeous* in her crimson red swathe (pictured above). Love her!
13Of course Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are in the movie.
14Anne Hathaway? I don't care for her at all.
15HBC can do no wrong. I love her =]
16great casting choices! i love most of tim burton's movies, so i'll be looking forward to this one. yay for helena, johnny and tim working together yet again :]
17I am VERY excited for the possibility of a darker, more grown-up version of Alice in Wonderland..that book has some interesting themes..(or maybe I just analyze things too much
) ANYWAYS...I am excited
18AWESOME!! I am super stoked to see this movie. I love Tim Burton and The Corpse Bride is my FAVORITE movie!
19i am getting so excited for this movie! yayyy

21Oh man. I'll say it again: I hope this one doesn't get screwed up (*cough* like Willy Wonka *cough*). Did anyone else see the 1985 TV movie version? I ask this all the time, but no one else has seen it.
22For as long as I can remember, Alice in Wonderland has been my favorite movie (NOT the Disney version... or the 1985 version--sorry LiLPeaPod), favorite book, and overall favorite story.
I am SO HAPPY to see how this movie is turning out....there isn't one decision I've heard of so far that I don't see being amazing.
23I'm so psyched that Anne Hathaway, Helena B. Carter and Mia W. will all be in this! Mia was so good on In Treatment, and I like that they're incorporating the White Queen role. Nice.
24I love the picture choise, really appropiate. I was expecting for Johnny Depp and Helena B.Carter to join, they usually work with Burton, but I'm looking forward to see Anne Hathaway as the white queen. I can't wait to see this movie and Mia Wasikowska is the perfect Alice, she has that "I'm innocent but I won't be corrupted easily" face.
25Who is this white queen character? Was she in the book?
26sugarysweet - Yes the White Queen was in the book's sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
27I'm totally loving the casting choices! This should be a really good film.
And Burton's version of Willy Wonka wasn't screwed up, at least not in my opinion, it was just truer to Roald Dahl's book.
28I think Anne Hathaway is a rather promising actress, so I hope she makes the most of this great opportunity.
29Ugh, I adore Johnny, Tim and Helena with all my heart, but Anne Hathaway is just an actress that annoys me. I was hoping the last thing she'd do would be a Tim Burton film. I just pray she doesn't do a Clint Eastwood film now.
30I'll see this film anyway, but I can't stand watching Anne.
I AM SOO EXCITED!!!!
31I'm so excited about this movie! The Disney version is my all-time favorite movie, period. And of course, I loved Lewis Carrol's books.
32Okay, yes I have seen the 1985 movies of Wonderland and Looking Glass, which is why I need someone to clarify this: There is a difference between the Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen, right? The Queeen of Hearts is the "off with their heads" queen from Alice in Wonderland, and the Red Queen is in Through the Looking Glass, with the White Queen, and I always thought they were two different queeens. Anyone know?
Either way, love HBC and Hathaway for these roles.
33erinsugar — It's true, the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are two different characters and the Queen of Hearts is the one who yells "Off with their heads!" So, the text that I quoted from the Hollywood Reporter article seems like it's incorrect, however, in Tim Burton's film apparently the two characters (Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen) will be combined in the character of the Red Queen.
It's confusing, I know!
34i called the Queen of Hearts role as SOON as i heard that they were making alice in wonderland. i didn't expect anne to be in the mix but i guess it's suiting to her right? it'll be nice to see how this cast works together.
35Out of hand wud have been if they'd bleached Christina Ricci's hair blong again (like in Sleepy Hollow) and had her as Alice.
36ooops i meant blond
