Well, here we are, several weeks into the new 90210, and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that it could be better. Much better. Don't get me wrong—I want to root for this reboot! It's been a lot of fun seeing Brenda and Kelly together again on my screen, and there are moments every week that make me feel like things are improving.
But it's not happening fast enough — so I thought it through and came up with five ways to fix this puppy. There's so much potential and it's not too late, if the powers that be would just take these simple recommendations:
No. 5: Increase the wardrobe budget. I have a hard time thinking of another instance when the clothing on a TV show was this distracting. This is 90210! Annie and Dixon (and the rest of us) are supposed to be awed by the extravagant threads these rich kids sport each day! As it stands, they look like most people I know who have gone a little nuts at Forever 21. A few of the outfits have been worth noting, but in general, the clothes should be way more envy-inducing. Wardrobe is key to setting the right tone and context for a teen drama, especially one with a fish-out-of-Kansas theme central to its premise.
No. 4: Speaking of which, focus in on that fish-out-of-water stuff. So far, the show lacks a certain urgency that the first 90210 had (and Gossip Girl has in spades). We need to see how high the stakes are for Annie and Dixon to fit in with this uber-wealthy, fast-moving crowd. But Annie doesn't seem to want for anything the others have, and she's had an easy time fitting in and making friends (she and Silver resolved their "issues" in a single episode!). And Dixon's already got the girl, for Pete's sake.
To see my top three, just read more.
No. 3: We need a "queen bee." Naomi is at her best when she's insecurely wreaking havoc on other people's lives. I loved the energy the show got when the writers finally relieved the poor girl of her lame family drama and put her at the table with Silver and Annie to discuss virginity (or the lack thereof). There needs to be much, much more Naomi ruling the school and defending her territory from here on out.
No. 2: And while we're at it, give us a bad boy. Where's the dangerous yet insanely appealing guy who could drag Annie to the dark side? Ethan is a nonentity. This show desperately needs its Dylan, and even a Steve would help. If we're really lucky, maybe the writers could come up with something as deliciously tortured as Chuck Bass.
No. 1: Embrace (or ditch) the school. If West Beverly High is going to be such a big part of things, then give us some actual school-based plot lines — more focus on Navid's news program, say, or actually explaining what Ryan's doing there most of the time. If it's going to be just a backdrop, a la GG, then they should make it less ugly — those locker colors are not good.

I'm with you on almost all of those, although I'd pick "ditch the school" over focus more on it. Mostly because the focus on the school bugged me when it was on back in the day. I live in fear of another Andrea Zuckerman.
1i don't really think a lot needs to be fixed on this show. i know a lot of people aren't crazy about it, and while its not my favorite show, i'm pretty hooked.
2Agree on all points. I really wish the clothes would get better.
3I totally agree about the clothes, I noticed from the first episode.
4AnnaLynne McCord was gorgeous in Nip/Tuck and I dont see that here. And the clothes make a difference in that.I wanna see trends!
I want to see the girls eat and gain some weight!!! They are scary looking. I am not watching it that much anymore.
5I think that the shows biggest problem is that there isn't much drama at all. We're just watching characters drift through this story without any action or consequence.
And you are absolutely right about Naomi. AnnaLynne McCord plays a psychotic b*tch well, and I want to see her fully commit to it on this show. Sadly, I doubt she'll be poisoning anyone with mercury-laced fruitcake on this show, or convincing anyone to give blowjobs in the school's barn and develop an eating disorder.
Man, I miss Nip/Tuck. I need that back in my life soon.
6I think the clothes are okay. Are they on the same par as Gossip Girl? No, but that's why I watch GG for the clothes, the cattiness, etc. etc. I do like the drug addled teen Adrina whom I believe they should make a regular. Ty the cutie who romanced Annie, they should make a regular. A black family would be nice. Having the one token Black kid ain't working for me. I have enjoyed watching Kelly and Brenda though. And these last 2 episodes have been the best so far IMO.
7P.S. And more of Jessica Walter please as the grandmother. She is a hoot!!
8Less nonsense with the parents! Jim and Cindy Walsh were minor characters and that's where their counterparts should be. There needs to be some teen angst, discord and drama. It is all so after school special. Even this story line with drugs is weak. I dont know, maybe is it because I am not 15 anymore, but this show is so lame. Bring in an Emily Valentine type, something to punch up the drama.
9I agree with these. The clothes are so not right!!! Plus, if I can add a #6, have ALL of the school girls gain maybe just like 10 pounds...Last time I watched the show there was a scene where Jennie Garth was giving that "Silver" girl a hug and I swear I thought she was going to break her in half!!!..very disturbing.
10I've got five things that would make it better:
1. Brandon Walsh
112. Dylan McKay
3. Donna Martin
4. Steve Sanders
5. Andrea Zuckerman-Vazquez
Sweetpeas is right, that's what we're all looking for, though I do think Sweet means the "ACTUAL" people
I would settle for characters that are similar to those, which is what these "5 fixes" really seem to be.
The "Queen" we want? That's Kelly Taylor
More focus on Navid? He's the new Andrea
The "bad boy"? That's the Dylan (And this is what I think the show needs most)
The Steve? He's the comic relief. I THINK that Navid is supposed to be the Steve AND the Andrea, but you can't do that. Steve had NO moral compass and Andrea's moral compass was OFF THE CHARTS, you can't combine those two characters into one.
It also needs "The Brandon", you know? The achingly "Good" kid that is also super popular? The one that tells his friends "You can't cheat on that test! It's wrong!" Or the friend when approached to try drugs "No thanks, i like being in control" But is too naive to realize someone slipped them to him. We need that guy!
We need these characters to make the show zip. That's what everyone is looking for, because let's face it. With GG out, OTH, and all the other "teen" dramas that are there, how many new fans would have tuned in if this wasn't touted as the old being made new again? I don't know if I would have.
I was (And for now still am) A fan of this show, but mostly because I hope that they are still developing characters, still finding the shows footing. I've vowed to give it until the Winter Hiatus and if it doesn't pick up by then, I doubt I'll catch it when it comes back.
12#6 more Grandma Bluth pronto.
13this list sounds more like '5 ways to make 90210 into Gossip Girl'
14i 100% agree with you. as a matter of fact, i ditched the show after the premiere, and it looks as though its still in need of the same, if not more, improvements. its such a disappointment, cause the plan was good. ah well. *off to watch GG*
15I think that Dixon is just TOO good. He needs to be a little edgy, and so does Annie. And I agree that the parents need to be excluded from most of the scenes - there is just too much family and not enough drama. And not enough hook ups! More drama! Maybe Blair should make an appearance at Beverly Hills High!
16Ha! SweetPeasMom, that is a well-made point.
17I agree with SweetPeasMom and Mykie
18. What made Beverly Hills 90210 to me were the characters. They were all based on types: The good guy, the bad guy, the funny/popular guy, The rich spoiled girl, the gentle girl, the smart/studious girl...and Brenda. You can identify with one or many of the girls and see which guys you would prefer, as guilty pleasure.
I enjoyed how they all mesh together, you can identify to one or many of them and most, I was eager to see more of them.
oh yes if the clothes got better i would be waaaay more interested. but at the same time i'd spend more money and time hunting for the items a la gossip girl. so for my bank account's sake, keep it where it is please!! i don't want ANY of that crap they are wearing....
1990210 just bothers me. They had such a chance to make a really decent show and they've totally blown it. Everything is wrong. They are constantly going to be compared to Gossip Girl and never measure up. if they wanted to, essentially, turn it into an almost identical show but on the west coast, they need to capture some of the glamour and originality that Gossip Girl has that got everyone interested and talking.
I guess my point is that it is always going to be compared to Gossip Girl and it really sucks in comparison.
20#5 is most definitely a most. Half of the stuff Naomi was wearing in a few eps I saw at AE!
21Re: Comparisons to Gossip Girl- They are different shows and I don't think 90210 will always be compared to its rich-kid CW predecessor. However, the folks behind GG have gotten a few key teen drama fundamentals exactly right (especially this season, hence improved ratings) that 90210 could learn from to improve.
22I agree with the comments above- AnnaLynn McCord was incredible in nip/tuck and hasd a gorgeous wardrobe to boot. I rreally wish she'd straighten her hair ,but I suppose that would make her look too old. Her parent drama is really annoying and she needs to cfocus on becoming more of a manipulator
23I agree with most of your points Buzz, but I also do think it's being compared too much with Gossip Girl. GG has definitely improved this season, but I still don't think it's one of the best shows of all time. It's just a guilty pleasure. 90210 does need better clothes though...a lot of the looks seem too late '90s/early '00s or they trying too hard to be hip and failing miserably (Silver's head scarves a la Nicole Richie).
I think the lack of well-developed, layered characters are the main problem with this show. Naomi is supposed to be the popular b*tch, but they have been focsuing way too much on her family problems and emoting is not AnnaLynne McCord's strong point. Ethan is a vapid jock...I understand that it's a stereotype that some jocks aren't intelligent, but he has NO personality either. Annie is too shrill and whiny to be the lead on this show, she is not relatable either. Silver, Dixon, and Navid are okay but they also need to be fleshed out.
I also don't like how these shows rush the relationships of these characters. Almost everyone on GG has already slept with each other, for instance. On 90210, Silver and Dixon are already together, and Naomi and Ethan were together when the show started. Who are we supposed to root for to get together? Annie and Ethan? Blech, how boring.
24I know i also compared GG and 90210, but I get confused between Josh Schwartz and Rob Thomas shows. They are interchangeable to me.
25I agree with 2,3 and 5, more grandma and while were at it more Hollywood! Oh, and more sex were talking porn valley here it's going to seep into the school, and it makes for good story lines. I really don't feel that prudes are going to tune into 90210, so go all out or go home!
26What happened to Andrea and Jessie's daughter Hannah? She was in the first episode this season and that was it. I think she needs to be tied into the show the Silver. Maybe this will bring back more alums like Kelly and Brenda. I think David, Mel, or Jackie need to come back or for Jackie make another appearance. At least mention where they are all at like Brandon-Belize, Dylan-Traveling doing charity stuff (now with Kelly and Sammy), Donna- had a baby? with David or what? Steve and Janet? Andrea?
27This show needs to be more realistic and not so cheesy.
i love that there IS NOT a queen bee and a bad boy. those are lame over-played additions to way too many storylines! I am not generally one for wanting a villain in a story, though. I think it gets to be too boring.
28i think that these are great points. remember how out of sorts brenda was when she first came to the zip code? she dressed up, snuck out of the house, and then started dating some guy that had no clue how young she was. besides that - there was something to be said about how all the kids in the old BH had BMWs when those were the cars to covet at the time. they need to step it up otherwise it's just another show that'll kind of fizzle. even priviledged has stuff that we all want but can't have...drivers designer duds, HUGE closet and all that.
29I disagree with suggestions 5 and sort of 3 and 1 as well. I'll just focus on 5 though.
Annie and Dixon aren't rich, therefore shouldn't wear extravagant clothes. Sure, this show is about rich kids, but not society kids. Fashion fits better in a New York centric show, like GG. I think over-the-top wardrobes on EVERY show out there makes it seem ok for the kids watching to blow their hard earned $$ or allowance on all things designer. I may sound old, but they have no sense of value anymore. When I was in high school there was no way I could afford $200 jeans and Prada bags. It gives them a false sense of entitlement. What happens when they leave mommy and daddy and have to work poor paying jobs? How are they going to afford their Juicy then? I think the show is trying to give them a somewhat normal role model in characters like Annie.
30richer wardrobe? you sound like you should be the queen bee in the 90210 and it's not a compliment.
31it seems to me you don't want this show to improve per se, you want it to turn into gossip girl!
32How to fix the show? GET RID OF Dixon! He's a uninteresting and boring kid. He has zero personality, we don't know what he likes other than lacrosse (boring). He mustly has no interesting dialogues, he's always wandering around between Silver and Annie's storylines.
And i have something to add. The good thing about the old show is that we came to love a group of people and the all had so interesting storylines. But this one looks like "The Annie chronicles". It's Annie everywhere. I wouldn't mind if she was interesting, but she's boring and annoying. They should create great drama to all characters.
33i agree with all of this especially numbers 1 & 2. I would like to see them embrace West Beverly again and have real bad boy. In the pilot i was exicted to see how they had the news room (ran by Andrea Zuckermann's kid) and such but as episodes move on it does not show West Beverly like the old Beverly Hills, 90210 did.
