Does anyone remember Helium? It was a very awesome Boston band in the late 90s — think Sleater-Kinney meets Bjork meets the Strokes — whose members included Ash Bowie of Polvo and a girl-crush-worthy lead singer named Mary Timony. Many of us who adored Helium, however, have been a little disappointed with Timony's solo output to date: Mountains was like a bad trip after a Renaissance faire, while The Golden Dove was an improvement but still a bit silly.

So, I was delighted to hear this track off The Mary Timony Band's next album, The Shapes We Make, which comes out May 8. On "Sharpshooter," Timony returns to her roots, laying her spooky alto over a simple but rip-roaring arrangement of Brit-rock guitars and acidic percussion. To listen, read more
