Guess who's making her way back to being a TV host: Rosie O'Donnell. On Nov. 26, the night before Thanksgiving, Rosie will host a variety show special on NBC, and it's possible this will lead to a variety series in 2009. Variety (ha) writes:
The hourlong event will include celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits, and a contest both for in-studio and at-home auds, the network said. "We want to show people that variety can be done in a new and inventive way for 2008," said Craig Plestis, NBC Entertainment’s exec VP for alternative programming, development and specials. "We hope to do it in ways you haven't seen before. It's going to be the YouTube of variety shows."
I'm not clear what that means, exactly, but regardless, I wonder if modern audiences will be interested in a good old-fashioned variety show. Would you tune in for this?

nope - i don't think that they are relevant anymore - and not even with rosie hosting. didn't a few other starts try to do one a few years back - like nick and jessica? that didn't do well then and i can't imagine that it would do well now.
She might have a big enough fan base to pull this off.
No. Times change. Sure they were fun in the 60's and 70's but were is the operative word. Aside from that Rosie is an awful person and host.
Rosie isn't a great host, so no.
I was just wondering the other day why we don't have any variety shows today (I was watching one of those "Greatest Teens Stars" on Vh1). It wouldn't work today, there's no innocence in America like there was on the '70s variety shows. And Rosie's not my favorite.
I don't know. I remember watching Donny and Marie when I was a little girl and eating that show up. Who knows. I never in my wildest dreams thought 'Dancing with the Stars' would work and grow in popularity. We need something more than reality shows, and crappy CSI/Law and Order staring at a dead body and solving a crime type of show.
No way, there definitely just isn't a place for them anymore.
nope. a lot of what rosie touches turns to mud, maybe not because of her, but because of how a lot of people see her.
this is rosie's format! the view wasn't right for her. think about how successful her own show was 10 years ago. it was great! i think the show will be a success if she stays away from the politics and just focuses on entertainment.
I'm willing to give it a try, couldn't be worse than half the shows on tv today!
Why can't people realize a variety show just doesn't work anymore.
Rosie is an idiot, I can't imagine she has the same fan base she used to have. They may as well ask Roseanne Barr to be the damn host.
Variety Shows just don't work. The 21st century version of the ever-present 60s-70s variety show is REALITY TV.
I would like to think that if it is funny and smart, it definitely could work. And whatever your view on Rosie is, like her or not, she is a funny lady who is smart, though opinionated...
Variety shows are so very 1960s/1970s and Rosie having a talk show is so very 1996... So unless they are also throwing in a time machine then my vote is no.
She's a little abrasive to for a light hearted variety show.
I liked her when she had her own talk show, but she has been driving me crazy the past few years so I'm not much of a fan anymore. Plus I don't like variety shows. I remember Nick and Jessica's, and it was horrible.
Nooooooooooooooooooo!
It will probably go the way of her self funded adoption agency, "Children of the World" in Verona, New Jersey. Stripped of its license for failing to respond to charges concerning the theft of newborn babies.
