Just when I was afraid Fringe was getting too formulaic — already — the show delivered an episode that broke the mold. The mystery isn't tidily wrapped up at the end, the good vs. evil of Massive Dynamic isn't even a subplot, and Peter Bishop's actually given a reason to stick around! I wonder if the powers that be just wanted to give us a few episodes to get used to everything, because this is what I was expecting when I heard about Fringe. Did anyone else enjoy it? Just read more.
- First of all, I had to laugh when within the first 10 minutes, Peter's talking about one of the things that's been driving me crazy: He really doesn't have a reason to be on the show. He tells Olivia he's just Walter's babysitter, he can't do anything to solve cases, blah blah blah — basically what we've all been saying. But by the end of the episode, that's all irrelevant, cause there are creepy things going on with Peter now, too.
- Let's talk about The Observer for a second. Lame name, cool character. Sure, he's sort of an X-Files-style quirk-basket (11 jalapenos!), but I want to know more about him. He might have replaced Nina Sharp as the supporting character I most enjoy.
- I guess we sort of know what "the cylinder" was (and isn't that a geometrically inaccurate description?) — or, at least, I assume it's related to the project to make a missile that could shoot through the Earth's core. But we still don't know what it was doing at the construction site or where it went later, which at least is a little more mysterious than the other Fringe cases have been so far.
- I want to believe Walter is a good guy, but after he shoots Astrid up with whatever it was that makes her pass out, I'm less sure. His attempt at apologizing is hilarious, though, as he offers to let her inject him as retribution but adds that he would probably enjoy it.
- So, Peter has a purpose, though we're not sure what it is. Someone knows, though, or has a good enough idea to kidnap him, shove wires up his nose, and extract a bunch of information he didn't know he knew. His scene with The Observer, where he seemed to be talking to himself, was pretty creepy. But I listened to Walter's monologue at the end no less than three times, and I still don't understand how that information made its way into Peter's brain.
- Even though I like the global conspiracy stuff, it was nice to have a break from Massive Dynamic. I kept expecting them to have a magical cylinder extractor that would pull out all the information embedded within the object — but no dice. Whew.
- Annnnd Agent Scott's back! I'm not as surprised as Olivia was, but still, I'd tune in again just to see what happens now that he's in her apartment.
- Speaking of Olivia, I'm really starting to like her. She's been criticized for being dull, but she's really just the girl next door who gets too wrapped up in her work to eat anything but cereal for dinner.
Did you like this slight departure from the Fringe formula? Do you have theories about what's up with Peter? And did you gasp when Agent Scott came back — or shrug?

I thought this week was pretty good too! Olivia's character did something besides scowl, there was lots of Walter, and no tidy MD wrap-up. Some of the bits with Walter were a little unsettling though. The shooting up of his assistant and his tantrum with Peter when he'd been arrested were a little scary. I think I like it better when he's just the sweet, sort of crazy guy, although this is certainly more interesting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps getting better.
1Thank goodness Walter didn't say "Oh ya I worked on this cylinder 20 years ago....." I like that its a little more myterious and sets up the new guy. I like the direction it is taking..
2Totally agree, tlsgirl. This episode was great! They mixed it up, gave Peter a purpose, and made Walter interesting. I mean, he was cute & sweet & funny, but now he has another side, which I love. And I really like Olivia. The whole cereal scene made her relatable, and you just had a better understanding of her character, the way she thinks, how she lives - work is everything for her, she doesn't have time to go to Stop n Shop!
3After last week's episode I nearly gave up on this show, but I actually enjoyed last night's episode a lot. It makes me hopeful for the future of this show.
4This episode was amazing.......I was getting a little worried last week..."the observer" was amazingly creepy...LOVED IT!!!
5I've loved all of the episodes so far. That said, I'm pretty glad Massive Dynamic wasn't involved (at least not talked about) as that had been getting a little stale. I'm loving the concept, the crazy "science" and just getting lost in the mysteries.
6Hah. Yeah, the Observer's "hot" sandwich: Nothing cold! All items must be room temperature or warmer: jalapenos, an entire shaker of pepper (and hot sauce, maybe?). I figured the explosion that immediately followed his meal may have been some super-sonic gas bubble passing from his system into the earth beneath him.
Funny that Peter mentioned his uselessness. Frankly, he still seems *semi* useless -- but at least with credentials he can now be PAID for doing a whole lot of nothing. Makes me feel better. (The money angle was irking me. How were he and his father paying for their expenses without a paycheck?)
7I absolutely love this show!!
8I was losing interest too, but this episode has reeled me back in for sure. I've been a JJ Abrams fan since Alias, so I really wanted this one to be interesting.
The scene between The Observer and Peter in the woods with all the back and forth was fantastic. That totally freaked me out. And what the heck kind of weapon did he shoot Peter with??
9i watched the show for the first time this week- i'm a little confused but intrigued- i might try to catch it next week. the problem with jj abrams shows is if you miss a week or two you are done!
10Loved it =]
11The crane was a MD crane though. Fringe just keeps getting better and better, and yay, got picked up for a full season.
12I tivoed it. I am really enjoying the NEW X-FILES SHOW. But the again I enjoyed the original up until the last two seasons.
Truly it is X-Files with a bit of LOST thrown in for good measure. Nothing new but well acted and funny, just like X-Files. Hmmm...wonder if Chris Carter is p-o'd?
13I think this episode kind of addressed all the complaints people had:
- massive dynamics becoming the Dharma Initiative
- Dr. Bishop having made every fringe science object on the show
etc etc
I also like that they are starting to build a real connection between Walter and Peter. I have to watch because I want to figure out what is "wrong" with Peter.
