In conjunction with the most recent trailer for the George W. Bush movie W, Yahoo! Movies has put together a list of the five most controversial movies of the past decade. They include:
- The Passion of the Christ (2004)
- Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
- The Brown Bunny (2004)
- Brokeback Mountain (2005)
- The DaVinci Code (2006)
I know that these movies offended plenty of people, for a variety of reasons. Have you ever been offended by these movies or any others?

Calida
I am more offended by the amount of brainless blockbuster trash that comes out every week.
1Hear, hear, jasmint!
2Neither of those movies offended me. The only movies that offend me are worthless drivel and movies that insult my intelligence. Ha.
3AGREE!!
4The only thing that offended me was United 93, and it wasn't the film (I never saw it), just the subject matter. Too soon, Hollywood.
5Meet the Spartans and all that other drivel.
6I'm with phasekitty on United 93. I mean, come on people. Give it at least a decade before you try to turn a profit on a tragedy.
And I'm with the other comments about ridiculous blockbuster drivel that gets made. I mean, seriously, how many more "Disaster Movie" or "Date Movie" ideas need to get made. I'm offended every time that I see a preview for that crap.
7The only movie that comes to mind is GUMMO. It's kind of obscure, but freaking gross. The icky people made my stomach turn. I was offended by the fact that the people I was watching with assured me that there are actually people like that in the world! They were all from podunk little towns and grew up with people like them. ick.
8I wasn't offended by any of those movies, but the only ones I've seen are The Passion of the Christ and The Da Vinci Code. The Passion of the Christ didn't offend because I'm a Christian and I've probably read more than 75 percent of the Bible and it seemed fairly accurate (and no, I don't blame the Jews for killing Christ). I read the book The Da Vinci Code, so I knew what the story of the movie would be and it didn't offend me because it's FICTION. What offended me were those gullible people who walked away from that movie believing that movie was telling the truth about Jesus and Mary Magdalene having a secret love child
Give me a break, it's a
movie!
I was offended by seeing that new Dane Cook movie, My Best's Friend Girl, last week because it was extremely sexist (girls love guys who acts like d*cks, and girls need to act like a sl*ts to be able to experience life to the fullest....ummm no, I have to disagree) and frankly, it insulted my intelligence. I only saw it because I had nothing else to do and I wanted to see a movie with my friend.
9I'm in agreement about the mindless drivel: Date Movie, Disaster Movie, etc. Sadly enough, they still sell movie tickets so they'll probably be making more down the line...
I've only seen 2 of those "controversial movies": The Da Vinci Code and Farenheit 9/11. I have "Passion", but am afraid to watch it. It's silly, I know. Many of my friends have told me how it disturbed them -- the detail and gravity of it all. I'm a wuss, what can I say?
10Although I liked parts of it because I'm a woman, I was mortified watching Sex in the City at the theater. Not having watched the show much I wasn't prepared for male frontal nudity and pornographic sex scenes. After about 20mins. I wanted to leave, but I didn't' want anyone to see me! I live in a small town and I know a lot of people. It's not so much that I'm against it, but I don't watch porno. movies and I was embarrassed. I would have just liked some warning because I almost took my 20yr old sister and my mother would have killed me.
11I agree with the comment about Gummo, actually. My ex tried to get me to watch it and I didn't even make it the whole way through because the characters were completely irredeemable.
12Ditto on the drivel. Something that makes you think, great. But the mindless stuff that's devoid of layers or character, no way.
13I like thought-provoking movies.
14Mesayme - Did you watch Sex and the City on TV? It was way more "pornographic" than the movie. The only thing in the movie that they rarely (if ever) showed on the TV show was full-frontal male nudity.
15None of those movies offended me... I was kinda offended by stupid movies like Prom Night.
16Cali... no. I didn't expect all that. They showed the guy having sex with two women, they showed umm..the redhead and her husband...
All I could think was...lord, don't let anyone from grandma's church come out of the other theaters at the same time.
17I wasn't offended as much as embarrassed. It was something that SHOULD be watched at home!!
Epic Movie was horrible. I hated it, very offensive.
18I can understand why The Passion of the Christ is controversial, but I don't understand why a movie about 9/11 or a movie about 2 men being gay is controversial, I don't get these people...
19I was watching *Trainspotting* with my teen-aged daughter. Of course, this was a while ago. One of the opening scenes was just repellent to me. I said to her, "Should we leave?" She said "Why?" and I settled in. The movie was rewarding in a very warped way.
Mostly I am repelled by sappy movies and bludgeoning.
20And to the person who talked about Sex and the City, come on! My 85 year old grandmother is offended easily and she loved it!
21
Don't know you or your grandmother...
22my grandmother however, would never have watched it.
I was embarrassed. period.
Bad novel to film, movies. For me when my favorite book is transcribed to a bad screenplay I get sad, because not only my ideas of each character is ruined, so is the book.
Its not as good as it once was.
23oh please. its just a movie and everyone is entitled to freedom of speech. get over it!
24I'm offended by most Michael Moore movies because they stretch and edit out the truth, and insult my intelligence. However, I've also been offended by movies like Hard Candy, American Psycho, and Devil's Rejects. It's just too much for me, personally, but lots of people can handle it. To each their own, I guess.
25Mesayme, sorry I forgot about Samantha's next door neighbor having the threesome. I was just thinking about the four main girls, but you have a point there. I think I'm just used to it by now since I watched the show. But I would never let my grandmother or anyone else watch it! The only person I've watched Sex and the City with are some of my friends and my middle sister, but I barely let her see it.
26I'm offended by any movie that insults my intelligence and that of the American population...
27I was offended by SATC - I found it shockingly racist and sexist.
28Cali...yeah, we're not really that kinda family LOL! I'm 36 and I wouldn't tell my aunts I saw it
I did enjoy the female camaraderie parts though.
Advah
...I wasn't gonna go there. Jennifer with the 'rent-a-handbag'
29ugh, not another teen movie offended me. crap like that sucks
30what parts of satc did people find racist? i would be very interested in knowing, perhaps i wasn't paying very much attention!
31I havent seen Passion, and have never even heard of The Brown Bunny. But I would never be offended by a movie! It's just a movie, and even the 'documentary' ones are just someone's opinion/perspective. No one is FORCING you to watch it.
32Catswig - for the racist parts of SATC (and I did think that, even though I liked the movie), I was mainly thinking the line by Miranda where she yells to follow the white guy with the baby to find an apartment, and all of the cracks about Mexico when the girls go for the honeymoon.
And mesayme, why was J. Hud's rent-a-handbag racist? Bag, Borrow, or Steal is a real site that people use.
33I am not easily offended by movies.
34I agree that the SATC movie was rather racist. Jennifer Hudson's character seemed like a throwback to the black housekeeper/nursemaid/mammy characters that were in so many old movies. She served no purpose to the movie besides being Carrie's assistant, and then she left her independent life in NYC to move back to the Midwest to get married.
35I have never been offended by a movie itself, but I agree w/ the people that said the 9-11 movies were too soon. Also, I'm all about the Bush hating, but I think Oliver Stone should have waited a few years. It seems rude to make a movie about a president while they are still in office (even if they are an idiot). Other than that, I'm usually just offended by the bad acting, poor storylines or poor production
.
36I didn't even think about that stupid piece of sh*t W that's coming out. I am by no means a Bush lover, but COME ON! That script was written when he still had a year left in office! Do you know what could (and did, actually) happen in a year?! It looks hastily put together and there for shock value. God forbid this actually happened, but what if Bush is assassinated, or there's another terrorist attack, before he's out of office? That would make his film completely irrelevant. Oliver Stone is going to feel like such an idiot. I also felt the same way about the World Trade Center film.
37yeah i agree about W. josh brolin should have had better taste....
but still it's a movie, don't watch it if you think you'll get offended!
38I have to disagree with Whiplash, Jennifer Hudson's Character was the one who helped and inspired Carrie to still believe in love. I think she was supposed to represent a young woman who comes to the city looking "for labels and love," not a black housekeeper. If you had any actress of any race play that same part the message would have been the same. And BTW, I know TONS of people of all races who can't afford those those awesome handbags!
39Overall, I haven't been offended by movies. There are parts of certain movies that get under my skin.
40Castwig - it's mainly what people said.
The Mexico part, the J. Hudson part, and I
also felt they were being PC by showing exaggerated Jewish and gay characters for not more than 1-2 mins.
41Sorry I don't mean to start the debate all over again, I think a few people also commented on that in Buzz's SATC group/thread last winter (sorry I couldn't find the link).
John Waters movies can be pretty raunchy. Pink Flamingos is intentionally offensive and gross- totally twisted! but that's John Waters!
42"God forbid this actually happened, but what if Bush is assassinated, or there's another terrorist attack, before he's out of office?"
Can you please refrain from saying things like that? That's just not appropriate. Like everyone else said, it's a movie. No one is forcing you to watch it. And the movie has been in the works for awhile now. It was not hastily put together. I won't see it because I feel like it will be living the last horrible eight years all over again for entertainment purposes.
And I agree with everyone else--the 9/11 movies were way too soon. Almost everyone who lived through it was still alive--we didn't need to see it all over again so soon. I can't imagine what it was like for the families to have to see ads and trailers for it everywhere.
43I've never been offended my any movie....
44I don't think offended is the correct word, but my hatred for The Brown Bunny is all-encompassing. The controversial blowjob scene was not offensive. It mostly just made me feel awful for poor Chloe Sevigny. Frankly, that scene is the only thing worth watching in the movie, as the rest of it is so incredibly slow and plodding and trying too hard to be poignant and artistic. Vincent Gallo should strongly consider never directing anything ever again.
45I voted Yes.. but not because of any of the movies above.. the gross out teen movies, Saw/Captivity movies are more offensive to me than Passion of the Christ or Fahrenheit 9/11..
And I am actually really looking forward to W. Pre-screeners actually say that it makes you fell more sympathetic to Bush. Considering I detest the man and his disapproval rating is 70%.. I would like the opportunity to feel sympathetic to the idiot. It looks like a comedy but I think it is suposed to be a drama.. cannot WAIT!!!!
46When I was young I worked at a video chain and let me tell you.. ALOT of people returned The Crying Game mad as hell! That movie offended people who never saw it coming. That doesn't happen these days since blogs and word of mouth travels faster to warn people from seeing a controversial movie.
I remember people walking out of the first 15 minutes of Natural Born Killers and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas too.
47Mesayme - 20 years old and you wouldn't let your sister see it? common! it wasn't that bad! i took my 17 year old sister and my aunt is organizing a girls night to view it again with my 15 year old cousin and my sister!
48It might sound lame, but that scene in Borat, when he and the fat guy are fighting naked was too much for me.
49Actually, that whole movie was controversial for me. I understand is a parody, but I think that some subjects were treated disrespectfully (mmm... hello, Judaism?).
I prefer Sasha Baron Cohen´s voice on Madagascar, or his silly portrait of ganster Ally-G.
Not my type of humor.
I agree about violence being the most disturbing aspect of movies. I had to get up leave while watching Cronenberg's "Crash"--it made me almost physically ill.
