The fifth season of Desperate Housewives is set five years in the future, and while it's a pretty big change-up for the show, all the old DH elements are still there (sexy secrets, mysterious new neighbors, unruly kids, etc.). It's a refreshing change of pace to shuttle all the Wisteria Lane residents into the future and then gradually dole out bits and pieces of what happened during those five years. Truthfully, without this little tactic I'm not sure I'd be interested in the show anymore.

Did you catch the premiere? What did you think? To chat about it, read more.
Susan — So, here we go. Susan and Mike were in a car accident that they both survived, but that the other car's passengers (a mother and her baby) did not. Susan is deeply haunted by this, still believing that they "killed" the mother and baby. Apparently the stress of the whole thing took its toll on their marriage, and Mike left Susan. Now Susan has a hunky painter named Jackson who's totally into her, but she can't bring herself to enter into a relationship with him, claiming she doesn't deserve to be happy. Maybe I'm a sucker for drunk singing scenes, but I kinda loved it when Jackson took to the stage to sing about how he wants to be Susan's boyfriend.
Bree and Katherine — Uh-oh. What happens when two Type A ladies go head to head? Perfectionistic backstabbing, that's what. We all probably saw this storyline coming from a mile away but it's fun to see it play out anyway. Katherine is upset when she discovers that Bree stole Katherine's recipes to put in her new cookbook, so when a TV crew comes to interview Bree, Katherine embarrasses Bree by making her spin sugar on the spot, a technique Bree hasn't yet mastered. In a flashback we learn that Danielle took her baby away from Bree, effectively breaking Bree's heart. Since then, it seems, Bree has thrown herself into her career.

Gaby — OK, I know it's wrong to make a kid run after a car, but I could not stop laughing at this part; good old Gaby still up to her manipulative tricks. In many other ways, Gaby has changed considerably. Now that she's accepted being a mother to two kids (with a supportive, but blind, husband), she's been fully de-glamorized. No more cute little outfits or styled hair. In many ways, this Gaby is way more humble and grounded than she ever was before. But this doesn't mean she's happy. She thinks her youth and beauty are gone, and she worries about her little girls not being beautiful. To make matters worse, Gaby overhears some other mothers snarking about how permissive a mother she is, saying her daughter is overweight because Gaby never tells her no. Sidenote: can you imagine being the kid who gets cast as Gaby's chubby daughter?
Lynette — Ugh. Tom Scavo could be written off the show and I'd be happy. How selfish is he? His twin boys, now teenagers, are wreaking havoc left and right, and walking all over Tom and Lynette. Tom, perhaps experiencing a bit of a middle-age crisis, has bought a cherry red convertible that he cherishes more than anything (or anyone, really). When Lynette sees Tom buddying up with his "awesome-ass kids" instead of laying down the law and punishing them, she gives the boys the keys to Tom's car for Homecoming night. This (a car!) finally gets through to Tom that their kids are irresponsible and don't adhere to the rules, so he yells at them when they come home.
Edie — Edie's back, ladies! And she's married a mysterious fellow named Dave. Though he appears calm and polite, Dave apparently has dangerous rage issues — though apparently there's only one person (presumably someone on Wisteria Lane) who should be worried about those rage issues. . . but who?

I do feel bad for the little girl playing Gaby's chubby daughter, she's young she'll probably grow out of her weight and then no one will recognize her! And in the mean time she was the best part of the show last night.
Lynette's story was pretty baa, and Susan who I usually love was just sad... they should bring her daughter back to liven her up a bit!!
1I went into the premiere with very low expectations, but ended up loving it! For the first time in a long time, I am interested in all of the story lines. I am definitely curious to find out who Dave is after...
2My very first reaction to seeing Edie's husband, Dave, was that he was remarkably (incredibly) blond, LOL. Of course, they is always my initial reaction to seeing Neal McDonough...it never ceases to amaze me, LMAO.
All the elements are still there. And truthfully what is a Susan/Mike storyline if they are happy.
I also laughed at the car scene with Gaby and her daughter. I also cringed when the other mothers used the dreaded statement that the little had "such a pretty face"...CRINGE.
I saw the Katherine v. Bree showdown coming...and probably see a Katherine show/cookbook in the horizon.
I know Tom is horrible at parenting, but he is truly the only stable male on the show. I need him not to be kicked off.
I'm can only guess that Mr. Blond aka Dave is probably after Susan for killing his wife and child...I hope to be wrong and thoroughly surprised!!!
3I am upset about Gabby's story line. I know this is a "fable" and all but are we just supposed to forget that Gabby previously fell down the stairs, lost her baby, and was subsequently told that she could not have children??? Now suddenly she has popped out two with no difficulty? Hmpf.
4Tiabia- I read some previews and Dave has nothing to do with Susan and Mike from what I remember.
5Gabby's daughter is exactly why I won't be having kids. BRAT!
Susan (as usual) is the worst character on this show. She could be violently killed off and I wouldn't care one bit. I can imagine her bringing up the deaths again and again until Mike almost went insane. No wonder he dumped her.
I love Bree and Orson. They are my favorites. And Andrew!
6Why can Susan and Mike never have a happy ending? Other than that, I liked the episode last night. I give it a 7 out of 10.
7And no way is that girl 4.
Susan's character is annoying as hell..always has been and always will....and I agree..please let her charac die a painful violent death? Sat on my Gaby's new kids? Oh I am horrible and crabby this morning..lol
8Thanks for the info CJaneTyp!!! That would have been too predictable.
9And CJane, I also agree about Gaby falling down the stairs. But I guess the great thing about DH going forward 5 years, if that they have a whole lot of backstories to fill in!!!! Almost going to Lost "flashback" route!!!
10Advancing the story by five years provides tons of room for both present and past story lines to unfold. I wasn't expecting a lot from last night's premiere and was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up really liking it. Having been an overweight child myself, I'm anxious to see how the story line with Gabby's daughter plays out and I'm looking forward to seeing what other "mischief" the teenage Scavo twins will get into. It feels like a good season already.
11is it me, or has marcia cross turned into a cat? stop the botox!
12I stopped watching this show, but watched it again to see if i was wrong for snubbing it? I wasnt, and the chubby kids bit was icing on the cake. That and the amount of plastic surgery these actresses have recieved...
13When Bree's daughter came to take her son, didn't Bree say she had nothing left because the kids had grown and Orsen was gone? I was confused when he was in the next scene.
14I believe at that time Orson was doing time...as requested by Bree!!!
15I thought the episode was fun, for one reason and one reason only. In fact it's the reason I WATCH TV.
I was able to suspend reality for an hour and just lose myself in all the silly goofy story lines. I mean it's all so far-fetched it's fun! Yeah, okay so Susan and Mike, the two of them are not put together to be happy. They just aren't! I don't see it happening. Bree is meant to get into one mess after the other while on the outside looking perfect. Lynette is the quintessential mom of the "00's", meaning she's got too many kids, spreads herself too thin and can't possibly be on top of each little thing that's happening. If Tom were MY husband though, I'd deck him. LMAO Still can't stand Edie, can't stand her one little iota and I'm hoping she's the next one to be killed off. LOL
My favorite line of the night was given by the little old next door lady, who after berating and belittling Edie introduces herself to Edie's new husband by saying "I'm her best friend on the block!" HAHAHA
And Gaby. I too laughed guiltily at the little girl chasing the car, but I couldn't help but be PEEVED at Carlos! Friggin' control freak. LISTEN TO YOUR WIFE, she sees these girls, takes them everyone, don't you think if there were a problem she'd know it? Friggin' dumb***. LOL
Overall, the season looks promising. As for TV, it's all just for entertainment, I don't take any of it seriously, so I allow myself to love it.
16Great episode, but I was rather bothered by the women still having wrinkle-free skin. Aren't they meant to be in their late 40's? LMAO!
17I'm just glad Gale Harold is on the show...I missed him after Queer as Folk ended
18So bluesarahlou, you loved Gale on Queer as Folk, too!!! YAY...he was such a hottie on that show. I think it was my first official crush on a gay character!!!
19I thought this episode was okay, not amazing but not bad.
Susan - Can't Susan & Mike ever be happy? I'm glad Mike is alive, but I think that its dumb that Mike left her because SUSAN felt guilty for hitting them. I could understand if she left Mike if HE was the one driving the car, but I guess Susan drove him crazy with all of her whining about it.
Lynette - This storyline was boring for me...its obvious that her kids were going to be delinquents. Where are their other two (or 3?) kids? I hate Tom now, he's like a child himself. He repulsed me last season after he refused to have sex with Lynette without her wig. My dad hates Tom now, so if he thinks Tom sucks than he must REALLY be terrible.
Hold on, I'll post my other thoughts later...
20Ok so after the finale last season and the fast forward thing I was really pissed. But after this episode I think I might like it lol
Susan- I (probably like others) thought Mike had died as a result of the accident and was terribly sad. Then it shows he's alive and they split up.. What the? Gah why can't they just be together! Geez!
Bree- I felt really bad when Danielle came and took the baby away.
... I would have loved if
they had actually shown Bree smashing the pie in the face of the photographer!
Gaby- The car thing -- had me rolling! OMG that was hilarious!!! And then I felt bad for the kid ...but omg that was awesome
Lynette- Tom pissed me off bad.
Eddie- Never have liked her, probably won't ever, but she brings good drama. And her husband? yeah wonder who he is after....
Um... overall loved it! And I'm glad it's back on
Buzz, are you going to do recaps for Brothers and Sisters? Because omg! that was an awesome episode too!
YAY for new tv!!
21Edie - We knew that she was going to back. She's like a cockroach, she will outlive us all. And her man, Dave, has crazy blone hair. It looks like albino hair.
Gabby - The car part was really funny, even though it was kinda funny. I hate that they gave her daughter the most stereotypical Mexican/Spanish name ever...Juanita. Don't like it. I feel bad for those actresses, because they are actually chubby in real life and probably had to deal with a lot of teasing. They just look so unhealthy, I hope they grow out of it for their sakes (not mine). I remember hearing that one of them is Demi Lovato's half-sister...I wonder which one. As for Gabby not being able to have kids before, i think they said that her chances were low of conceiving but not terrible. I've heard of many cases where women get pregnant after they stop trying so hard and just leave it up to nature. But two kids does seem to be pressing her luck. I can't believe Carlos is still blind, I thought that somehow he was going to be "miraculously healed."
Bree & Katherine - That's sad that Danielle took Benjamin away, but it was HER baby. Bree and Katherine's storyline was fun, but it was weird seeing Katherine being so submissive to Bree up to this point. I wonder where they could take their storyline, because it seems like it could get boring after awhile. And WOW, Marcia Cross needs to lay off the Botox. None of them look any older for that matter...
22Am I the only one who thought Lynette's kids were totally aged? Five years ago the twins were like in second grade. Now they are old enough to drive?! Those twins were definitely not eleven, were they?
23Great recap Buzz--but I love Tom! I think their story line may be boring to some people because they are actually happy--and that's why I like them! Like others have said I wish Susan and Mike could be happy!
I also was sad about Danielle taking the baby
Overall, I thought it was pretty good! And,
Gaby's daughter is def. not four in real life!
24
yay, I am psyched for this season. I am really intrigued by Edie's new hubby. Did he go
searching her out, seduce her all to get revenge- yikes! I hope something happens and Carlos gets his sight back 'miraculously'. Could the new guy be there for Tom or Lynette- something from
Tom's past with his dead ex and daughter who was sent away? Very intriguing.....
25"So bluesarahlou, you loved Gale on Queer as Folk, too!!! YAY...he was such a hottie on that show. I think it was my first official crush on a gay character!!!"
I really did! Loved that show...didn't start watching it until it was on dvd and I would plow through like 5 episodes per sitting. Although it was really awkward to explain to my roommate at the time that I wasn't watching gay porn (she walked in on a particularly graphic scene).
26I should stay on topic
I liked this episode. I was really wondering how they'd pull
off the whole "skip ahead 5 years" thing, but it seems to be working. I agree with a previous post, that gives them a lot more material to work with, especially the backstory stuff.
And I'm with you Party...Lynette's kids aged A LOT in 5 years...
27i thought the show was dull...
What I found most interesting is how dressed up Susan seemed to be. Gone were the tshirts and jeans...it was pencil skirts and designer tops and heals...and lots of makeup. Any thoughts?
28it was such a disappointment!
soooooooo tired of Susan's dramas with Mike!and where's her daughter? she's way sweeter than her mother!
i must be retarded to buy that crappy story line of Lynette's family like how Tom treats his kids and how 5 years CAN age kids sooooooo much!
where the heck did Gaby get the two kids when she was told couldn't have children any more? i'm not a fan of Eva but Gaby was my favorite one!
Eddie's husband is such a creepy dude! every time his face showed i got chill.
Bree's friendship part is kinda blah.those two strong women can never be friends can they? but her daughter's coming back makes her much less flat.
29Wow, some of the comments seem to be attacking the actresses more than the characters...lol
30I don't know why, but I just really love the episode yesterday. I can't believe I am saying this, but I find Gaby's character the most interesting and touching (the scene between her and Carlos esp). But she's still a b*tch, making the poor girl run (it's a pretty good idea for exercise!!)
I could do without Lynette's storyline, but her twins is pretty goodlooking:)
Don't mind Bree and Katherine's storyline, but Bree's daughter really is an ungrateful b*tch!! I wish they would do something about Bree's gay son though, so much potential to develop there now that her daughter is gone.
I don't know what they can do with Susan's storyline, maybe there's something going on that we don't know yet.
Totally creepy Eddie's husband, loving it!
Gale Harold rocks!
31I hope they'll dig out more from Jackson.
i watched this show for the first couple seasons, and now i'm not so into it...but i guess they have to do something to keep viewers watching. i thnk that there's a lot that they can do now that they've fast forwarded a bit...and maybe it's the pick me up that the show needs to attract a new audience.
32My favorite line of the night: "Know your brass!"
33Ok i adored this epidose, but the two lines that had me rolling on the floor were:
"edie: i have a husband
susan: really? whose?"
"gaby: i had two children!
edie: what like for breakfast?"
loved loved loved it!!
34thanks for the quotes, #34! i loved susan's snappy response to edie!
