Lipstick Jungle wasted no time diving straight into the drama in its season premiere, dealing with unexpected death, teenage antics, overbearing mothers, and breakups that don't seem to stick. We met two new characters — Wendy's mom (Mary Tyler Moore) and Victory's assistant/publicist (Rosie Perez) — and said goodbye to an old one or two. So, how did this return trip to the Jungle work for you? To see my thoughts, just read more.
- When Kirby and Nico took those pictures way back when, I figured they'd get leaked to the media — and then I was disappointed when that didn't happen. Well, I take it back. What the writers actually gave us was so much better: Charles sees a print of one of the photos and buys it for Nico, filling her with overwhelming guilt.
- So that sets Nico adrift, looking for something that will make her feel close to Charles and forget about Kirby. And she must really have been desperate, because on the advice of Victory's new assistant/publicist, she gets a collagen shot "down there." That's the one part of the episode that didn't work for me; I think it was supposed to be comic relief, but it just came across as sad, especially later on. Or maybe I'm just a prude.
- Meanwhile! Charles ends up at the hospital for heart surgery — at which point, given the opening funeral scene, I was pretty sure he was a goner — and while Nico is pacing in the flower shop and saying cheesy things about "literally breaking his heart," his horrible student turns up . . . pregnant. I of course spent a long time wondering how much time had passed and trying to figure out if it was possible that she's suddenly that pregnant, but whatever: Charles is a cheating, lying fool. Not that Nico isn't — but come on, I can't even imagine opening up your husband's desk and finding out that he was trying to build a case against you for your affair because he's gotten his fling pregnant. Sheesh.
- Thus, all the giggling at the funeral, then Nico wandering the streets of New York alone. Does this pave the way back to Kirby? Or will she take some time to heal?
- Meanwhile, Maddie sure seems to have grown up in a hurry, sneaking into bars with a fake ID that claims Wendy would have had to give birth to her in the third grade.
- I'm curious to see how Wendy's new resolution to do it all and do it better will be challenged by her own mom. What we've seen so far is that Wendy's mom sacrificed her parenting for her career — but she's still feeling unfulfilled ("He said I should go back to Connecticut and open a yarn shop"). I think that must be Wendy's worst nightmare.
- Victory's plotline, meanwhile, is pretty light: She wants a new store to free herself from Joe Bennett; Joe Bennett owns all the good real estate in New York. Mostly dull, but I still get a kick out of Joe Bennett, so that's fine. And Rosie Perez's character pushing her gigantic breasts as close as possible to Joe Bennett's face at the funeral was classic.
- Line of the night: a tie between "He left me for someone who sleeps in nightgear" (Nico) and "Did you Google something that I haven't Googled?" (Joe)
Overall, I don't think Lipstick is totally there yet, but this episode did a good job of building on last year's finale and put some interesting things — Nico's widowhood, Wendy's mothering issues, Victory's icy relationship with Joe — into motion. What did you all think?

yea i knew at the very first scene with the funeral that nico's husband had bit the dust. mary tyler moore looks like she has paid one too many visits to the plastic surgeon and it was distracting at how freaky her face is! i couldn't take her character seriously. i want joe and victory to get back together! i think that maddie's character is moving too quickly into the rebelling teenager...but i guess they have to bring some conflict into wendy's life.
1I loved Victory's outfits last night! They were all so cute.
, wonder what's gonna
happen with that.
2I agree with Leilanic1, Mary Tyler Moore's face was so creepy.
I can't believe that Charles' student is pregnant
I thought it was a good premiere, better than i expected.
Does anyone else think Wendy's daughter sort of looks like Mila Kunis??
I've only watched half of it but I think it's picking up too. I do like it but it's not there yet. There's huge potential though. I'm keeping it on my Tivo Season Pass for now.
Seeing Kirby's abs again was very nice...
3That was the best funeral ever! Charles' baby momma is going to hit Nico up for money and although I think it may be a nice thing to do...for tv's sake I hope she doesn't give her a dime! I agree I think the actually should have worked on developing "Maddies" character first before giving her that type of moment.
4Hello Kirby! I never watched this show before but I am totally tunning in for his abs now. He remindes me of Scott Speedman from Felicity. And that collagen G-spot injection made me cringe...ew.
5I read the book and Im glad they dispensed of his character this way. Even in the book he was boring. Now bring back Kirby and those abs.
6I have always enjoyed this show and this episode did not disappoint. Goodbye Charles AND seeing as you had been cheating with the pregnant student for a number of years AND you were planning to accuse Nico of abandonment--GOOD RIDDANCE. As for MTM's appearance...the charcater seems to be a more brittle looking version of the mother she played in ORDINARY PEOPLE over 30 years ago--same EMO, different ZIP CODE. As for my favorite scene that have to be when Kirby showed up at the funeral to give his condolences...as he walked away Victory & Wendy had to hold her back...yep she's wants him in the worst way---even after all that's happened. At least that collagen shot will not go to waste.
7Last night was my first time watching lipstick jungle and I will be watching again. It was pretty good but I had a feeling that there was more to the student that met the eye.
8well i was REALLY into last season and i had a feeling that a few things were going to come up but i guess this is defnitely a way to kick it all off. seeing the photog at the end of last season made you realize that charles was building a case - but to find out that he was that involved with his student - that's just nuts. we remember seeing her last season and she did NOT look the least bit preggo ...go figure.
i'm kind of sad that victory is that heart broken about her relationship since i think that it could be something good to build on, but you know that there's going to be more depth to that one since they are still tied together until her company turns a profit.
as for wendy's mom being back in the picture - i think that it's a good dynamic for the show - but i wonder what the affect will be on her position at the studio.
all in all - things are just not even close to what the book was like and i don't know if that was intentional or if they just felt that they could create a better story line without following the book. it's just hard for me to relate now since i know what happened in the book and i'm just lost...i had all these expectations and now - poof they are gone. i'm sure that it'll all work out ok though
9I loved loved last night episode ! Best of the series so far !
I have a question for those who read the book : how different is it ? What happens ? How does it end ? Thanks in advance
!
10This was a great episode, I am hooked.
11i loved last night's episode! dont really care for wendy...i feel like she is trying too hard. and her mom looks freaky...her eyes!!!
12I really wanted her to go to Kirby at the end of the episode...
13I want her to go to Kirby. He's sweet, plus he has killer abs.
And i miss Victory's assistent!!!! He's so nice. And i don't even like Joe. I keep thinking about Pretty in Pink and how he got so ugly with time hahaha
14i love it.. and it got me thinking... charles had all those pictures, he already knew about the affair etc etc.... maybe kirby was in on it too???
just a thought.
15I would like less soap (who's with who, arguments, etc.) and more single episode-specific fun: parties, co-workers, wit, fashion, culture, etc. If nothing else, it'll make the show better in reruns and DVD sales!
Cause then it's not just what happens (soap) but HOW it happens.
It's still no SATC, but a pleasant stopgap! I have some hope for the "Ex List"!
16cibele: i too prefer victory's old assistant! still out on Rosie Perez, it seemed like she was brought in to make the show a bit SATC-like, but i like the show as it is. also, Wendy catching Maddie seemed like a nod to Gossip Girl in a way, as if to say not every parent out there advocates teen drinking. loved the giggling at the funeral!
17fudgeit, he's not going back to the show? I'm sad now
18He's so funny and caring.
I was entertained for pretty much the entire episode and am looking forward to it stepping up a little more and getting me hooked!
I also have a feeling that Nico may have been set up in her fling with Kirby... something about the PI photos of her with Kirby - aren't they from the night she met him? And it would be an incredibly bizarre coincidence if Charles happened to come across the only picture Kirby sold of Nico.
19I hope not because Kirby is smokin' hot, but I can't help but be a little suspicious.
lily, my thought exactly. How convenient that Charles got that pic.
FFFFFUN!
20Maybe Charles actually paid Kirby to seduce Nico so that he could build his case against her, the timing sounds almost right...
But of course, Kirby has ended up falling for her, although Nico is a 'job' for him. Then, the drama will enfold later later since this lil' secret will be revealed to Nico later on...we'll see Nico being so mad at Kirby, basically will be breaking up with him and will possibly hook up with another hunk (then depending on viewers' response to the new hunk, if negative, maybe..there'll be a...reunion if/when Nico forgives Kirby.
Ahh, it does sound so soap-opera
I absolutely LOVE this show. This episode was great. I can't wait for Wednesdays!!!!!
21KIRBY is the satrving artist who would do anything to make a buck or two. I wonder if nico did not get the whole situation. i knew they will make kirby the bad guy- after all it is clear he is a part of the plan. but that is how they met. unfortuantely they have to deal with their feelings. i forgot the whole book is all about but they have to expand the story. i know for sure...the assistant of victory ROY has a special place in the story but not in the book. JUST THE WAY HE LOOKED AT HER. after all why would he work for her if he did not admire or like VICTORY? victory will play the blind one searching for love when ROY is just there all along. FOR SURE for wendy and shane will go seperate ways. that would be the biggest failure of WENDY. LOVING THE SECOND SEASON more. faster phase, more story and plot lines. TWO THUMBS UP- great THE WRITERS are back!
22First of all, I agree with the first comment. I barely recognized Mary Tyler Moore. It was freaky and distorted - her face I mean. Which is sad cause she could have aged so gracefully. I never saw last season but this season got me really interested.
I didn't really understand why she went ahead with the shot. How does that present itself as a solution to any problem???
But it got me in the heart to find out that Nico's husband had been cheating on her long before she cheated on him. Made me happy there was a funeral scene. How dare that man (character) pretend he's such a better person (in the kitchen scene where she admits her affair).
