David Cook's first single has hit the Web, and I'm still sorting out how I feel about it. Is it too Creed-ish? Or is it exactly what you hoped to hear from the American Idol winner?
"Light On" premiered on Popeater on Tuesday, will hit iTunes on Sept. 30, and will be the first single from his still-untitled first album that will be released Nov. 18. Take a listen to "Light On" (don't let the eyeliner in the video scare you) and then vote!

Not my cup of tea. I'd leave that light off!
1Not sure about this one AT ALL.
2Ha, Buzz you are faster than me. I was just about to shoot you a message that this was up. I think it will grow on me, but it isn't as good as his other stuff. I'm hoping that the rest of the album is more rock than pop. His voice lends itself to rock.
3I wasn't feeling it at first but found myself smiling more and more as it continued..... will definitely be buying this!
4It does sound a bit like Creed and I hate Creed, but I want to give it a chance.
5Leave it. Talentless.
6I love it of course. He is an amazing singer and performer. There is nothing like watching him live. I cannot wait for the album to come out and he goes on tour.
7I'm disappointed. David Cook has done nothing different than what he did week after week on American Idol - cover someone else's song. This song has Chris Cornell's stamp all over it... nothing new or original from Cook at all is in this song. If you listen closely, this song songs like a mix of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun and Daughtry and Nickelback thrown in for good measure... Why not just title the song Cook sings Chris Cornell... Badly. He has sold out his last hope for true rocker cred for run-of-the-mill mainstream faux rock.
8BAD SONG!
9This song was actually written by Chris Cornell and was never used for his record.....I wonder why? LAME! More importantly why can't any of these AI people write their own music. I actual Like David Cook and it's pathetic that his handlers would release this song as a single he can do much better.
I'm not into him really. Didn't like the last song at all.
10Wow, I am sad at these reviews. Obviously, I am a fan so I have to say that I love it. David's voice sounds stellar here. Sure, you can hear Chris's influence on the record, but that is to be expected being he was one of the songwriters. David is co-writing a number of songs on the album, this just didn't happen to be one of them. I think this single is just rock enough to be played on rock radio but not so rock that it can't be played on pop radio. I don't really hear Creed in this at all though. Oh well...you can't please everyone.
11I think his vocals in this song are first rate. The song isn't my favorite, but it's not bad either. If anything, it gets me even more excited to hear the rest of the album, and the songs that HE actually wrote. I think what people may be forgetting is that this first single needs to serve a purpose. It is a transition song.... to bring those people who actually liked the "magic Rainbow" song into his circle a bit more, before unleashing anything too "rock" that might alienate him. Baby steps, as it were. And he's a smart guy....he understands that his first album NEEDS to have big-time commercial success, or he may not have a chance at a second. You can't win every battle with the label the first time out of the gate, and I think David Cook will have a BIG part of himself on this album. Unfortunately in this business there is a lot of give and take. I'm just stoked to hear the rest of the album!
12I almost never like the CDs put out by any of these American Idol winners. The exception would be that I liked a few of Carrie Underwood's songs, and strangely I'm not even much of a country fan.
13I have a feeling this guy is going the way of most American Idols, and will just fade into obscurity forever.
14Disappointed in this one; I think he is more talented than this song shows.
15Come on, he has a great voice.
16I agree cindychic, his voice is phenomenal...
17I think they could have given him a better song. I wasn't his biggest fan but I did like seeing him on the show, and this just sounds...weird to me.
18POPSugar, I wish you'd just ask what people think instead of asking if it's too "Creed-ish". I like to make my own judgements without having preconceived notions put there! Anyway, your link is gone but I went to Popeater to hear it. Luckily I DID NOT read what you said before I listened and I'm glad I didn't.
Antway, I loved it! Perfect for his voice! I would not call this pop. Pop/rock mabye but it definitely has a rock edge. I don't think it's like Creed or even Chris Cornell, even if he wrote it. Not sure where the Creed thing came from??
19Love ya Pop, but I agree with waffle84. I got a little annoyed to see your opinion of the song posted BEFORE the poll. It gives the listeners a preconceived notion before listening to it.
I also agree that this is a rock song, not a pop song. But I am going to stop coming here to defend this since everyone is entitled to their own opinions...and I am sounding like a fangirl..haha.
20He doesn't have a ton of control over this album at all so it's not surprising that they chose a song so similar to what he did each week on Idol. I mean really that's why people voted for him right? I think he's very talented and give some time and some choices he can do great
21I think it sounds like Creed or Chris Cornell song a lot, but I don't mind it. After reading the reviews I thought the song would be horrible but I really don't think it's bad, it needs to grow on me more.
22Hey guys, Buzz here (not Pop -- she hasn't weighed in yet!) Didn't mean to bias you — I did say I was undecided about the song, and I still am.
23Oops, sorry Pop, meant to type Buzz! I understand that the way polls are set up here it is not really possible to have the poll first and then get your opinion, so no need to apologize.
24Yeah...I'm on the fence as well. David Cook's voice is amazing but this particular SONG isn't particularly stellar. I'll be looking forward to his next release.
25I adore this song. It's '80s Power Rock Ballad feel and David's velvety, raw vocals and viceral emotions just bring me to my knees. I couldn't have wanted any less. This is an experience, not just "hearing"!!!
26This song is amazing !
27David Cook is amazing !
A rising rock star !
Love it !
I foresee amazing things and songs coming soon from David Cook !!!
His album, his solo tour !!!
I agree with Hiedi on this one. It is a transition song. David is a smart man and knows what he is doing. He is not going to come out of the gate blazing rock. He has allot to say and says it well. I see this song as an introduction. He shows us his heart in the lyrics. The arrangement uses his range well, balances of highs and lows, loud and soft. The more I listen to it the more I like it. I believe it will draw fans in from all genres. Great first single and leaves me wanting more, much more.
28This is a fantastic song. It's got so many layers and showcases his beautiful voice so well. He's so much more that just an American Idol. I'll be downloading Light On on September 30 and buying the album the second it comes out. Light On was worth the wait!
29A Creed song? Seriously? I don't think so. What it does remind me of are the great arena rock songs of the 70's/80's that I grew up with. I love it!
30It sounds too much like Bo Bice to me. But I still "love it"!
31For me it's better than David Archuleta's song, but I'm still on the fence...
I think I liked it but I found myself getting bored, and sort of waiting for it to finish so I could vote and comment. I'm not sure it that means I hated it though.
32His voice is amazing though.
33I really, really love this song. I wasn't so sure at first, but that was more that it wasn't what I was expecting from his Pre Idol work. His vocals on this song are TOTALLY PHENOMENAL, and as was pointed out by his brother, it's a great transition song for David. This is what I envision when I listen to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isOoEmKZiEc .
34I HEART David Cook! The song does sound like a lot of the songs you hear out there already, but I'd have to say that people have to take into consideration that although he helped write the songs, he most likely didn't have the final decision. The American Idol higher ups choose his sound and control the way things need to be.
If you listen to David Cook's older songs - pre American Idol - it's very fresh and you hear more of his style and his excellent voice.
35Sounds like Creed.
