Amazing how much more entertaining things get when love isn't in the air on Gossip Girl, don't you think? I knew things would get wickedly funnier/better without all that shmoopy Dan and Serena love-fest stuff — and of course it's always best when Chuck and Blair are flirting via scheming instead of actually trying to be together like normal people. All of these nonlovey elements came together to make a pretty dramatic return to school for these Upper East Siders.

We not only went back to school with the gang, but we witnessed the return of the so-called "Bad Serena" we've only heard delicious rumors (and seen scandalous flashbacks) about. This version of our girl appears to be less overtly mean girl than Blair but far more icy and scary. Dan asking a girl out ("Dan with boobs" as Blair describes her) does not help matters. Anyway, there's so much to talk about, so let's get started.
- Yay, Lily's back! And unhappy in her soulless marriage (of course). And she calls Chuck "Charles."
- The Bass-van der Woodsen family breakfasts might become my favorite scenes on the show. I love how Lily sorta listens as Serena and Chuck trade insults but doesn't interject or anything. For example, I'm pretty sure Serena calls Chuck a "unit" (ah, or was it "a eunuch"?) at breakfast this time around.
More to discuss, just read more.
- This episode reminded me of all the drinking these kids get away with — at some of the swankiest bars in Manhattan! And they're not even taking it easy with a beer or two — it's all Belvedere Vodka martinis for Serena, which is kind of amazing. I'm trying to think if I even knew what a martini was at 17 years old . . .
- Rufus has his secret new lady friend spend the night at the Humphrey pad and asks Dan to keep it a secret for some reason. Something's going on there. I need to know more about this woman.
- Jenny educates her family (and us) on the first day of school process in which Blair and her crew categorize freshman girls into two groups: projects and victims. I love that this process comes complete with file folders on these girls' lives that Blair somehow has access to.
- Serena and Dan hemming and hawing over running into each other post-breakup was so very dramatic. They were both like, "But what if . . . what if I see her/him?!" To which everyone else basically replies, "You say hi and be nice, duh."
- Of course Blair had the best advice for Serena: "Breakups are easy. It’s having to see them date someone else that’s hard. Why do you think I rub it in Chuck’s face every chance I get?"
- Dan and Serena this episode are a little bit like that chicken/egg conundrum — it's hard to tell what comes first. Does Dan's self-righteousness make Serena feel terrible about herself, therefore pushing her to be conniving and mean? Or is Serena really conniving and mean, therefore pushing Dan to unload a world of self-righteousness?
- Either way, I'm calling this round for Serena — Dan really shouldn't have asked another girl out their first day back. That really was mean. If I were Serena I would have gotten drunk (on maybe, like, a beer. Martinis give me a nasty hangover) and flirted with hot lacrosse players, too, honestly.
- I guess we should have guessed that the Duchess was having sex with Marcus but I was still surprised . . . and then I laughed . . . and then I winced. I winced even more when Marcus talked in his awful British accent about a crackling fire or something or other. Hurray for this storyline coming to an end!
- A Nair martini? Ew! And would it really make hair fall out that quickly? These girls get really, really mean! I was scared for "Dan with Boobs" before I knew she was in cahoots with Chuck, and I'm still scared for poor, tortured Jenny.
What did you think of this episode? Are you prepared for the rise of Queen Serena? Do you like how there's never room for two at the top and so Blair is already on the outs? It strikes me as funny that this whole "queen of the school" thing comes down to the opinions of three background girls who get maybe one line an episode. I'm so curious to hear what you thought!

bring on Queen Serena. But I enjoy B and Serena's relationship...somehow I don't think its going to sit well with B that Serena is back on top
1LOVED last nights ep! Now it's getting scandlous!!
2I'm pretty sure that Serena called Chuck a eunuch at breakfast. A eunuch is a "castrated man, esp. one formerly employed by Oriental rulers as a harem guard or palace official."
3I am loving this "Bad Serena" its going to be fun to watch. Noticed how Blair's little army is dressing a little boho in the last shot? Does anyone else here HATES Nate??? V was only trying to help him! and he dropped her like a fly..... foolish boy.
The only "gossip BOY" worth watching is Chuck....my evil evil Chuck... who knew he was plotting the time? I sure didn;t....does he do nothing but plot all day???....*sigh* I wish chuck found out about Lord lameO and his step mommy....i would have LOVED to see chuck punch HIM in the face! grrrrr
!
4Great recap Buzz...I have been waiting all day
Cortney — I bet you're right. It's funny that all of these things would make sense as potential insulting names for Chuck!
5I am new to Gossip Girl and still not that into it, but last night I was like "How are they in a bar drinking martinis?!" Does anyone know if this has been explained with some fake ID plot or something. And no, a Nair martini would NOT make your hair fall out that fast!
6wytang627 — I agree, I was mad at Nate too. He was jealous of Dan of all people and then mad at Vanessa for not properly dealing with this owner/older lady secret affair? If I were Vanessa I would have responded with, "Sorry Nate I guess I was absent the day they taught lessons on how to deal with threats from a rich Duchess who's threatening to unravel the guy you like's entire world."
7at last, the gloves are off and we're seeing more meanness that we should have in season 1, i think. the Nair martini kind of grossed me out, as did Marcus' accent. glad to see the back of the Black Widow that is Catherine too. i think this is going to be Chuck's season, and bad Serena too! not sure i like Serena putting Blair down, their friendship seemed too solid for that. what i found laughable was Catherine's money could fix the Archibald's financial woes, which i'm guessing is like, millions or something???
8Queen Serena is the only Serena there should be. I have read a few of the books and I'm glad they're finally getting Serena's image back. I do love Blair - so I don't know how much I'll like it when S is back on her game and outshining B in every way possible.
9"It strikes me as funny that this whole "queen of the school" thing comes down to the opinions of three background girls who get maybe one line an episode." I know. Its always the minions that ultimately have the power to choose, but I gues they like ti that way.
10Oh and as for the drinking thing - from what I got from the books is that their families are so important to the society in NYC that no bartender would dare to cross them by not letting them have a some drinks. They had sort of been raised around alcohol at their parents functions, so it's not at all surprising that they're 17 and know a thing or two about what to order.
11Ok I doubt that a little goop of Nair, that probably doesn't make contact with your scalp, could make your hair fall out that fast. That part was just weird to me. I once heard a girl put Nair in her stepmom's shampoo and it made her hair fall out, but thats way different than throwing Nair at someone.
Anyway, this episode was pretty good. I was grossed when the Duchess started making out with Lord Marcus, but ehh...whatever. I was more shocked that Chuck paid off that girl to pretend to like Dan. Chuck is evil.
Dan seemed pretty douche-like to ask out another girl right away. Dan & Serena just broke up! That is so not cool.
12I'm pretty sure Serena said "eunuch" which is hilarious considering Chuck's *problem*.
The background girls are such idiots. If I were Jenny, I'd slap them across their spoiled faces. Akll the udner age drinking was surprising too, although I remember many nights of senior year when we had a little too much fun. But we never went to swanky clubs like that, that's for sure!
Dan's self-righteousness is unbearable and Serena can never, ever actually produce a sincere and coherent apology. Come on Serena, enough of the stuttering and spit it out! Or maybe she's always interrupted by Dan. Either way, it's annoying.
Poor Lily. Why did she choose Bart Bass? I love how she calls Chuck "Charles".
13I used to do under-age drinking in bars in New York. It usually depended on where I was and who I was with. I'm not saying the show is completely realistic, but it is doable. I imagine the more money and influence you have, the easier. (Or in my case, the more bars your cousin guest-bartends at, the more you can drink for free in bars you are illegal in)
Also, Buzz, the folders has come up on other recaps as well. Maybe I'm the only one, but when I saw them, the first thing that came to mind was that the "projects" put them together themselves. I doubt those were the schools. I mean Chuck just innocently slipped Blair one that he obviously created. My bet was that they put them together themselves and then submitted them to Blair and Co for review. But that's just my thought.
I was happy to see Serena turn to the dark side and not be a continual punching bag for Dan on the virtues of life without privilege. His self-righteous attitude always got on my nerves. Especially since the way that he looked down on her was completely hypocritical. That being said, the look on his face at the end of the episode was kinda sad.
14Buzz - I think "unit" would have been just as good an insult!
15i thought that maybe they knew how to accelerate the nair process somehow because chuck alluded to "mixing a nair-tini" which is probably just to let us know that it was nair, but maybe they added something to it. they do seem well-practied!
i am not at all a confrontational person, but i am getting so excited about all the meanness to come with the blair and serena dynamic flipping.
16the "projects v. victims" premise is hysterical, too. i thought that the girls put together these "resumes" themselves, like going through rush.
17I can't believe how much I enjoy this show, but I do! I often wonder when these kids actually go to class, and I love how they can all just leave the school in the middle of the day. You definitely have to do some suspension of disbelieft on this show, from the lack of actual school time to the drinking at bars to the student folders, but it's just so fun! I still can't believe Serena and Dan broke up in the first place, basically because it bothers him that she has a priviledged background? How stupid. I didn't realize that lunch at school counts as a date, but regardless, he was hitting on the new girl and I would be offended by that. I felt like the change in Serena was almost too quick and drastic, but at the same time, breakups bring out the worst in us. And who does Dan think he is, acting righteous while telling Vanessa to have Blair help her wtih revenge? Ugh.
18There was no reason for Serena to be that mean to Blair. Blair has forgiven her for sleeping with Nate, and stayed loyal to her.
Luckily Blair at least is clever, which Serena is not. So, Blair will get back on top soon enough.
19you know, i think that this episode reminded me why this show got so much talk last season. i think that it's a bit scathing but i think that it's entertaining to say the least. i can't believe that they naired the girls hair - and that we find out that she's being set up to take dan down for serena. i don't know if that's really a mature thing but i guess there's not much we can expect otherwise right?
i think that it was a very expected twist that marcus and duchess were getting it on, and that vanessa couldn't stay away from saying something. we'll just have to see how that one pans out too
20I knew the dutchess and marcus were having sex. I put that thought behind me though because I didnt think GG would really "go there." I thought the "nair martini" was messed up and was shocked there wasnt a full on fist fight, if somebody did that to me I'd need to be restrained. Seriously, who just cries and walks away after somebody throws Nair in their hair? I can't wait to see more of what these girls do to Jenny and what Jenny does in return. I cant wait til next week!!
21oh, and Vanessa gets on my last nerve. I cant stand her. She seems to be the expert at messing everything up. She needs to go far far away. I'm hoping Blair does something messed up to her...some sort of revenge something or other.
22The nair martini was new. I thought it was evil but awesome. Amanda just annoys me. Chuck is so conniving! I still love him. Queen Serena, wow.
23I missed last night's episode but what were the dutchess and Marcus doing having sex? I thought she was his step-mother?
24I loved the visual of Serena placing the scarf around Blair's neck that shows she was now queen bee. Poor Blair... losing her squad and her boyfriend in one episode.
25Hah, as I watched the rise of queen Serena, I thought it explained me the cat fight between Serena and Blair we heard so much about during filming of this season. I also thought that now Blake Lively would have to actually act instead of just looking gorgeous with flawless hair from episodes to episodes.
26Venessa gets on my nerves too. She's just as annoying as Dan when it comes to righteousness.
am i the only one that dont like Serena as the queen bee? i dont know, but something is just off. maybe it's Blake's acting, but i'm just not convinced. Leighton is a much better actor, she can express Blair's emotion without one word.
27dang I missed this and this seemed like such a good epidsode
28Does anyone know if they play it again like they do 90210?
29LuvLeoDicaprio... Yes...depends where you live and what channel you get. I acutally watched GG on Sunday (I live in Vancouver, Canada)
30Chuck is The Master of Puppets!
Machiavelli!
Iago!
Best episode ever. Can't believe how good my guilty pleasure can be.
31Ugh the girl who played 'Amanda' was a horrible actress! Chuck was looking really yummy this ep. and I usually don't find him attractive. I wasn't really shocked by Marcus and the Duchess because I knew something had to be wrong by the way we saw him act in the 1st episode. I think Dan drives Serena to be the Queen Serena.
32Even though it will never happen, I hope Dan gets phased out. He is SO annoying.
33I really thought last night episode was kind of boring until Aman"duh" was shown to be Chuck's lackey. That was amazing! I love Chuck so much!!
I can't stand V either. She is such a bore.
I also can't wait for next weeks episode. I agree with BlueSmile in the fact that Blake doesn't seem like she can pull off the Queen Bee as easily as Leighton, but I also agree with Tulip in the fact that B won't take being 2nd for very long at all. Drama!
Oh, I did feel bad for Dan at the end too. I wonder what is going to happen to the Humphreys now that they are on the outs?
34I think S's queen bee will be more cold and calculated versus B's more animated and b*tchy queen B. I don't necessarily think Blake can't pull it off and she is not as good of an actress..I think she did a pretty good job with the Humprey stardown at the end there.
35A Nair martini so would not make hair fall out that fast. You could probably wash it out before it did any damage at all.
Also, last night made Vanessa even more loathsome. Obviously Blair is the one to handle the b*tchy Countess Whatever and her icky son. Let her do what she does best!
36what brand was the purple shirt that serena wore in the bar? does anyone know? PLEASE let me know
37You mean the dress? The scene when she was flirting with the jocks? Its a Herve Leger http://www.herveleger.com/fall2008/index.php
38I'm with you Buzz, I'm SO happy we're done with the Dan-Serena romance thing, it was getting properly disgusting. I'm not sure what I think of her as the new Queen B, but at least glad to see she's not whiny anymore!
Also super happy the Lord is out, that was a completely boring story-line. Can't wait to see what else Chuck as in mind to get Blair back!
And as much as a I hated Little J at the end of season 1, I'm starting to really like her.
I hope she won't get anything bad...
39I thought it was so good, honestly. I thought nothing good might happen in this episode, like it might just be subtle and it was but in a really amazing way. I thought the whole little Dan & Serena tension was going to get annoying, but then when those followers came it was like oh, here comes the drama. & also when Serena started crying b/c Dan moved on so quickly, " It hurt" It was touching, but then the b*tch came out. And when she said "Never again. Next time everything goes through me." I wasn't going to think much of it but then their faces like lit up.
40OMFG! Marcus and Catherine. Ewww! That was so awful. I felt bad for Blair because she didn't want to get screwed over, but then again she is doing,"A twisted four play" with Chuck as Serena puts it. But freakin Vanessa. OMG! Doesn't she know that when
Blair Waldorf says she'll deal with it, that she'll deal with it. I mean I know she was trying to help, but get some commen sense for crying out loud. Now Nate isn't all clear now, but at least Marcus is gone and we can get back to Blair & Chuck.
Okay and something is wrong with those girls for being so mad at Jenny "for what she did." She lied about sex, so what? She was trying to help someone, even though she compromised her integrity.
Well anyways, I think Serena's Reign may be interesting. I don't think she'll be as Blair though becauase B is more interesting. But when Serena made Blair wear that headscarf thingy, I was just like "Ohhh my gosh"
I love smarmy, icky Chuck. Love him and his mad scheming.
Blake's acting is soooo bad and stilted, but I'm kinda psyched for a mean queen Serena (though I do actually prefer Blair - she kind of makes her meanness charming in some weird way).
Can't believe I'm watching this show...
41is the white tee serena wears under the vest with her plaid skirt the boyfriend tee from brass plum?
42nevermind. it's splendid.
43I LOVE it!! One of the best episodes in a while!!!!
44Can I just say how much I want a Herve Leger dress? They're so fabulous.
45Actually, a text to one of my friends last night read: "I so want a Herve Leger. Also a Chuck Bass."
46this was one of the best episodes ever. now i cant wait for more drama!!
47I love Chuck Bass, he is so delicious with his personality.
The only thing I am shuddering at is the thought of Serena going after Little J at any point. That will be doubly evil to that little sophomore. Or if Serena turns her back on Eric.
48I love good Serena and bad Serena - I can't choose! Of course Serena's going to be a different Queen Bee from Blair. They have different personalities, and it would be boring if they acted the same way. I still want Serena to get back with Dan though, eventually.
