Am I alone in thinking this premiere was kickass? I feel like they upped the comedy factor and threw us some crazy new developments. It was thrilling and gruesome and surprising and funny. . . My faith in Heroes is fully restored. I'm not sure I needed both this episode and the one that came after it; I forgot how much they pack into each episode. After two of them my brain was starting to overload. So, here we can discuss the first of the two episodes, "The Second Coming," in which I think the best part was at the end (see: the end of this post after the jump). A post about "The Butterfly Effect" will follow this one.
After the jump you'll find spoilers, so now that you're warned, read more.
Because the two-hour premiere was so full of craziness, I'm trying to keep it all straight. Here is my attempt to identify some of the key points from this episode. . .
- So, a future Peter shot his brother, Nathan. The Peter of today is inhabiting the body of another man, trapped on Level Five (where HRG is still being kept!).
- Peter transports Matt Parkman to the desert, where he wakes up with a scorpion on his face.
- Nathan dies from the bullet wounds — but is then revived (and totally made me jump when he suddenly sat up in bed) by Linderman, who is. . . also not dead.
- Joining the list of not-dead people is Niki — er, now called Tracy — who did not, in fact, die in a blazing building.
- Hiro discovers (from a DVD he was not supposed to watch) that his deceased father (hooray, Kaito Nakamura!) designated Hiro to be the "sentinel of a dangerous secret." Hiro then finds the secret (in a safe he was not supposed to open), and it's half of a formula, on which, apparently, the fate of the world depends. Kaito explains that if this secret gets out, there's only one hope, "a chosen one among you who carries the purity of blood, the 'light' to safeguard against the darkness."
- Hiro promptly loses this half-formula to a brand-new hero: a "speedster" who grabs the formula from Hiro and then punches him in the face. Dismayed, Hiro teleports to the future, where the city is in alarm mode as what appears to be the apocalypse descends. Future Hiro and future Ando are arguing about the formula when Ando electrifies Hiro! You guys, Ando gets a power (in a theoretical future unless Hiro stops him)!
- The scenes with Claire and Sylar are, in my opinion, just the right combination of campy horror/thriller and comedy (not unlike a real horror movie). Claire walking backwards into the kitchen holding a knife? Come on! Anyway, Sylar finds a file folder of special people, "a whole shopping list of abilities," before he manages to carve off the top part of Claire's skull (OMG ew) to access her. . . special abilities lobe? I dunno.
- Best line of the night goes to Sylar, in response to Claire's question about eating brains: "Eat your brain? Claire, that's disgusting." Sylar then imparts some intriguing information, "You're different, you're special, and I could never kill you, even if I wanted to. You can never die. . . And now, I guess, neither can I." Yipes!
- Nathan has had a kind of spiritual awakening, now spouting things about God's message ("we are all connected"), and other platitudes like, "Only together can we be the stewards of our own destiny," and "We could be angels, all here to do God's bidding." Finally, we have a new little mantra, evolving away from cheerleaders: "Save ourselves, save the world."
- Linderman is only too eager to agree with Nathan, gently telling him, "It seems you and I are meant for great things, Nathan. Great things, indeed."
- Mohinder determines from Maya that the abilities "are produced by adrenaline." He then manages to isolate whatever this is into a serum that can actually give someone powers (this seemed remarkably easy, but I'm cool with that). Thus, Mohinder injects himself! Mohinder has powers! I love this new development. The person studying superheroes. . . becomes one of them. He's like the good alternative to Sylar, in some ways.

And then there's the ending when they set the words to William Butler Yeats's poem, "The Second Coming," to a montage of images wrapping up the episode: "Turning and turning in the widening gyre/ The falcon cannot hear the falconer;/ Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;/ Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world. . .Surely some revelation is at hand;/ Surely the Second Coming is at hand./ The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out/ When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi/ Troubles my sight. . ."
I thought that was pretty freakin' cool.

Mohinder shirtless..so HOT!
1Mohinder shirtless..so HOT! But I am confused if Future Peter (since its not Peter) came back..there was a time when there was "two Peters". Does that mean the person that came from the future was a shape shifter who looked like Peter then took over Peter's body and then transported Peter's soul/inner self into that prisoner on Level 5?!
2ok, I really have tried to watch Heroes. This was my third attempt, and I still can't get into it
I LOVE the idea of the show, but I find myself thinking how cheesy it seems... Granted, a couple parts were really cool (like when Hiro stopped time and followed the path of the speedster girl), but I couldn't get past the acting (gorgeous doctor, but baaaaad acting), and overly dramatic dialogue.
Also, literally in the other two eps I've watched, they showed an apocalypse---how many are there supposed to be?? Hiro said he saved the world twice, so is it a neverending battle against more than one apocalypse?? Help! Should I keep giving it a try? I feel like the first episode (which I watched) was so much better!!
3After two episodes, my brain was ready to explode! I'm SO back into it now though!! After last season I was kind of like, eh...but not anymore. I hope they continue on this track, it was fantastic.
- I wasn't overly shocked to hear that Mrs. Petrelli (creepy lady) was Sylar's mom. I wonder how that's all going to play out and what she has planned for him.
- I felt a little bad for Ell (or is it El?) last night, she lost her Dad and her job in the same day. And what about her crazy electrical explosion when Sylar tried to get at her brain? That was pretty cool.
- Sylar's cranial exploration of Clair was nasty. They barely showed anything and I was still cringing!
- I knew Mohinder was going to inject himself. And CYL, he was totally hot shirtless. YUM! I was a little disappointed he slept with whatever-her-name-is, because I think her character SUCKS (and could she have worn skimpier clothes? My husband certainly wasn't complaining).
- And maybe I'm confused, but didn't future Peter put present Peter in that guys body to keep him from telling Nathan that he was going to kill him? Or is future Peter someone different all together? I'm a little lost now.
I know I have more, but this will suffice for now. So good!
4wait I'm confused. I thought it WAS peter that shot nathan, but it was his future self, just trying to stop him from starting the chain of events that lead to bad times for the special people. I haven't watched the secon episode yet, we recorded it and will watch it tonight. And you know what? I don't like Sylar. Not in a "he's a bad guy and i"m not supposed to like him", more of a "He annoys me and I wish he'd go away because he thinks he is way too cool".
5And I still giggle whenever Peter tries to look tough. it's just not working.
AAAAAAAAA LUCKYME!!!!! You just gave away something from the second episode that I haven't watched!!!!! DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!!!
6Renee3 — I'm confused, too! But what I think is happening is that neither present nor future Peter is actually the real Peter. When Angela asks the guy who looks like Peter, "What have you done with my son?" He says something about putting him someplace safe, and then we see another guy (who looks nothing like Peter) in a Level Five cell screaming that he's actually Peter Petrelli.
7Haha, wow that's complicated.
1) peter did shoot nathan, it was "future" peter. hello?
3) I believe nathan woke up, because he already had an infusion of clares blood from when he was burned. Not because of linderman (who i dont think is really alive)
11)mohinder doesnt "help" maya take control of her powers, she can already do that. He figures out what his father couldnt, that the powers are centered in the adrenal gland (when maya freaks and her powers manifest he realizes the powers come out during high emotional times, a flight or fight response) and not in the blood like his father thought. Mohinder injecting himself is a clear case of "hero worship" here he has been for two seasons always the hero's maid never the hero and injecting the serum without truly testing it was a bad bad idea
NOW mohinder is acting just like SETH BRUNDLE from THE FLY! He crawls on walls, swings from pipes, bares his chest and is in need of alot of sex apparantly, and he is losing body parts. From now on, he is Mo-brundle.
8Buzz i dont understand what you are confused about? Future peter put present peters body into the Villian. End of story.
9Caterpillar Girl...but if Future Peter put present Peter into the body of the Villan..there should be a body..aka present Peter kicking around? You know what i mean? Like if I took your brain and put it into someone else's body..your body would still exist? Unless you swap which would mean the villan is now in Peter's body..which they didn't show..
Maybe I am over thinking?
101) The fact remains that Angela asks the person who looks like Peter (who morphs to look like present-day or future Peter) what he's done with her son. And the real Peter is apparently in some other guy's body. I don't think it's accurate to say that future Peter shot Nathan because it's not really Peter. I think it's a shapeshifter.
3) In this episode, Nathan says to Linderman, "You're the one who healed me." He says those words.
11Also, in this episode, specifically, which is to say, not taking into account what we learn in the next episode, Linderman appears to at least be "not dead."
Sorry Renee3, I misunderstood Buzz's post! I didn't think there was going to be a whole 'nother post devoted to the second episode. I figured it was all wrapped up into one. My bad! Please forgive me!
12My brain is a little confused and information-overloaded, mostly because all the people I thought were dead aren't, but you either can't see them or they're not the same person. But, hooray for getting back to good Heroes! Now if we could just get rid of Maya...
13The 'speedster' character is cool, but I think she looks too much like Elle. In fact, I thought it was Elle at first glance and that confused the heck out of me!
14About Future Peter vs Shapshifter. If it was a shapeshifter, how could he have all of Peter's powers? We saw him teleport and fly last night. I don't think a shapeshifter would get all of the person's powers, just their appearance. I think Ma Petrelli could've just said my son meaning her Present son. Plus, on an extra from Season 2 DVD, you can see a bit of the script of Second Coming and it clearly says Future Peter.
15Way to go yzobel. I was getting super confused about that because I was convinced it was a future peter/past peter thing.
16Hm..what if it was Sylar from the Future? Hhaha now I am over thinking it...but the question still remains..what happened to present Peter's body?
17Hmm, that's an interesting point about the powers, though the Peter who's trapped in that guy's body doesn't seem to have any powers. (And yes, I know we just haven't seen him use any powers, but if future Peter can change his appearance (scar, no scar, etc.) then you would think that present-day Peter would have the same power and could morph out of this random guy's body.) So what did Future Peter do? Split off present-day Peter and take away all his powers and make him look like someone else?
18I have no clue about Present Peter's body. I haven't tried to think to much about it, but just transferring a person's consciousness into another's body is a new power so it could be linked with that. Maybe the whole body transfers too. I guess we'll learn eventually.
19He wouldn't necessarily have the power already. There's a 4 year gap between them where a bunch of people have powers, so he could've acquired a lot of new ones that Present Peter doesn't have. Or he could just know how to use them while Present Peter doesn't know it yet. Remember how long it took him to control all of his powers in season 1?
20Buzz-
With regard to Peter- I think that Angela asks him what he did with her son because, to her, the present day Peter is the real Peter and the future Peter is only a possibility. When talking to Claire in the beginning of the episode, it is clear that it is the future Peter, and not a different shape shifter, who decides to go back and shoot Nathan in order to stop that possible future (where they are underground being hunted and experimented upon). The present day Peter has morphed into one of the level five prisoners and is now stuck that way, somehow by future Peter's doing. Future Peter seems to have gotten rid of the level five prisoner guy (probably popped him off somewhere remote like he did Parkman) and replaced him with a shape shifted, stuck in this shape present day Peter. Phew.
With regard to Linderman- yes Nathan SAID that he saved him but what does Nathan know? Linderman might be letting him believe that for his own purposes. It is not clear yet whether this Linderman is alive or just a figment of Nathan's imagination. Isn't he both a healer by touch and also has the power of invisibility?
My questions are:
How did Tracy have time to establish herself in her current role as this political adviser person? How much time has passed to allow this to happen? Is this the real Niki/ Jessica or has she split off into an actual separate person? Where are her burns? Where is Micah? etc.
Is Linderman really alive or dead?
Is Mohinder turning into a fly?
Who is Sylar's father?

23I am loving everyone's comments and cannot wait for some clarity on the while present peter/future peter storyline.
What about Mohinder's new found SUPER SEX DRIVE? That scene with Maya was hot
24lucky me - I forgive you! haha I'm going to go watch the 2nd episode now so I can be caught up!

26I am sorry- I don't know why the same thing keeps posting over and over??!?!
27cjane:
I read on another heroes board that this tracy could possibly be the 'real' jessica, the twin who supposedly died when she and nikki were babies? if she didn't actually just die and was instead taken away somehow, she has been living an entirely separate life which would explain how she has been able to establish herself where she is now. and that would explain why she looks just like nikki and why she was so surprised when she used her power (she might now have known she had).
... whew. I am so glad heroes is back!
28oh...good one superstar..that is entirely plausible. But I like her power way more than Nikki's!
29Its not a shapeshifter. We have seen "future" heroes in past seasons, they werent shapeshifters, This Peter, as pointed out, has many powers even more than the present peter because hey, we dont know who he has been around right? He can morph, he can transport others into other bodies and other places.....This show might be confusing at times but I dont think its going to go to that "oh dang thats not peter from the future" gotchas. after all he is adamant about asking nathan for forgiveness even before he tells nathan who he is. why would some random shapeshifter do that?
30I do not believe it's another force inhabbiting peter, but future peter. And apparently he has the power to make himself look like present day Peter.
Stupid 2 hour premeire with a stupid 1 hour countdown, though. I fell asleep about 30 minutes into the second episode. I am an old lady, I can't be expected to stay up until 10!
31Oh, and Hiro is so cute. I just want to snuggle him.
32Does anyone else remember from season one when there was a Future Peter, who also had a scar across his face? (he was living in Vegas w/Nikki) So maybe the show denotes Future Peter - as having the scar across his face. And there is always the possibility that Future Peter has powers that he absorbed in the future, and therefore we don't understand yet.
I think that Present Peter is stuck in this other guy's body (wherever his own body may be), and therefore can only use the guy's powers - powers which HRG alluded to when he was showing Claire the photos on the computer.
33Superstar - that is an AWESOME theory about Jessica! I'm sure the Company had something to do with that split up - I don't remember the story about her dying, though. I wish I could - because I seem to remember that things didn't match up.
I do think it's future peter because no shapeshifter could act quite like peter - all angsty and what-not. Plus, when he's "alone" he looks like "scar" peter - not reg. peter or someone else.
34Wow, Treb, I thought I was the only one! I thought the show was a yawn. I also literally fell asleep twice. I finished it, but I felt like I could have been just as thrilled watching Dancing With Stars. I think Heroes and I might be parting ways soon.
35"Eat your brain? Claire, that's disgusting."
That line made me laugh so hard! Definitely the best line ever. The delivery was perfect.
SO happy Heroes is back! Though I really should have re-watched the second season over the summer - I can hardly remember anything that happened last season. I always have this problem with TV shows, movies, books... I have to go through everything twice before any of it sticks.
36it was too much to handle!!
I vote for Future Peter and that Linderman is an imaginary friend of Nathan, I didn't see that Tracy (Nicky who's not Nicky, twin? triplet?) saw Linderman, just pass by him, and Linderman nod to her, but I didn't see her nod to him.
to much!!! I invite friends over to dinner... and some of them were like 2 HOURS?? REALLY? I'M HUNGRY
37"He then manages to isolate whatever this is into a serum that can actually give someone powers (this seemed remarkably easy, but I'm cool with that)."
LOL, Buzz...I love it. And I'm with CYL - if it involves a sweaty, shirtless, Mohinder then I'm DEFINITELY cool with that!
38Is that all that happened because I missed "The Butterfly Effect."
39OMG, the premiere was so kick ass!!!!! I loved it. I had never lost faith in Heroes anyway, but they just keep getting better and better! I can't wait for each new episode to air so I can sit in shock, awe, disbelief, wonder, amazement and have my breath taken away for an hour every week!!!!
Heroes Kicks ASS!!!!!
40ahhh! i loved it all.
41"a chosen one among you..." - is most definetly claire!
and i love peter and how this whole parallel between him and future peter is going on!
nathan just seems weird now.... and i will always love mohinder. i was so happy when he got a power!
p.s "Claire, eat your brain? That's disgusting."
42probably the greatest line of the night. hahaha!
genius.
"Claire, eat your brain? That's disgusting" funniest line ever.
Am I the only one who wants to see Sylar and Claire, or Claire and Peter get together in some weird romance? I think I might be lol.
Sylar is cute.. i really liked that "Cops" video recording that occurred when he was roaming the streets in Claire's neighborhood.
Claire is obviouslly broken from Sylar's attack and I cant wait to see her as a bad girl.. I'm sure the writer's are going to have her doing the cliche drinking, drugs, DUI, etc etc type of thing. She's probably going to get a weird BF or something.
Mohinder and Mya... eh... he was hot tho, and she's very pretty, but i feel like he ruined any chance of professionalism he had with her. Also, I think he's going to become addicted to taking "Hero Drugs", even tho he's growing some weird sh*t on his back.
Elle- I'm glad she didnt die. I like Kirsten Bell. Maybe she's going to turn good and Claire is going to be bad and mayeb they'll meet up again and have another fight.
Present Peter is so naive and boyish.. it's kind of sickening. I prefer future Peter.
Nathan has lost his mind. Only he sees Linderman?? Rightttttttt... Linderman aint there!!! It's in his mind.
Where did Mohinder send Molly???
How is Partman( Partman right? eh) going to get back without a passport?
43Who knew Monhinder had such a great body?!?
44kluster86, no you aren't the only one! Before we found out they were related, I *totally* thought Claire and Peter were going to be romantically linked, and I have never been able to shake that feeling every time I see them interact.
As for Peter, what if he isn't trapped in an actual other body, but has just been mentally string-armed by future Peter into looking the way he does? Perhaps he just hasn't figured out yet how to change back, since it does take him a bit of time to harness his powers. If so, then where did he get the morphing power in the first place?
I think Linderman is Sylar's father.
45strong-armed, lol, not string-armed.
46Ok, I was confused about some things, but here goes:
1) I also think that Mrs. Patrelli doesn't consider 'Future Peter' her real son- but somehow the future version of him has taken over this time stream by stuffing 'now Peter' into that other guy's body. HOWEVER- now that 'now Peter' is free and running around with the evil guys, maybe he will either try to get his body back ( assuming it still exsists and is just hidden somewhere?) and also, since he was locked up, maybe the body he is currently in also has some cool power.
2) Nathan's religious conversion was creepy to me. I think Linderman is a manifestation of Nathan's subconscious or something- not physically there, but might still have useful info.
3) I really like the theory about Jessica/Tracy being split up at birth by the company! Thanks- it makes a lot of sense.
4)Syler is awesome. I also felt he had some sympathy for Claire. I mean, he is totally self centered and all, but he really seemed to kind of like her. The 'I don't want to eat your brain' line will be hard to top all season. I kind of see him morphing into a sort of anti-hero- not doing what the 'good' guys are doing, but with a plan, not just chaotic or wanting to end the world. His is still one of the most interesting characters. Once he GETS all these powers- what the heck is he going to do with them???
5)I don't think Claire will just rebel- I think she wants to learn to defend herself and become an ass-kicker- I thought her line about still just being a victim was great- even though she SURVIVES, it does not keep her from being victimized. And hello- Company, mom and dad, whoever- obviously the whole 'let's hide Claire and let her try and have a normal life' routine DOES NOT WORK. Give it up already!!
6) Poor Elle- her little world is just totally crumbled!! But- I thought it was interesting that her electrical power manifested as some kind of self-defense mechanism and wouldn't let Syler cut her head off!! This could be useful later on. Also, now that she is sort of cut loose, I think she will gravitate towards either Peter- who she sort of dug before- or Claire. I would LOVE to see her somehow find Claire and teach her some self defense. I think they would be funny together and also formidable on offense and defense.
7) Poor Ando. He obviously gets a power later, or someone who looks like him does. But now he is just confused. I love Hiro, always looking for the quest. I liked the new girl- but how come she is not French?? They could have at least given her an accent. She is fun though, and I totally think Hiro had a crush on her.
All in all, a good opening.
47Buzzsugar - I didn't read all the comments, but I really think that the guy that Hiro met in the olden days in Japan, is the Peter that we saw in this episode. What do you think?
48Oh! and when Mrs. P referred to Syler as her 'son' I think she meant in a 'I genetically engineered and tinkered with all this stuff and made you like this' Frankenstien's monster sort of way, not that he was her physical, actual born son. but he has dark hair etc. so I could be wrong...
49tchan- last season my BF and I hypothesized that the blonde guy is Claire's ancestor and that is one way she carries the 'pure' bloodline to be invincible. Don't know if that's true, but it would sort of make sense.
