The Project Runway challenge a couple of years back where the designers had to dress other contestants' mothers was a nightmare, so it's no wonder that when this year's crop of designers saw a bunch of average-looking, middle-aged women walk out onto the runway, they feared the worst. But the Project Runway team had something new up its sleeve in Wednesday's episode: This time, the designers had to dress the women's daughters, hip young women just out of college and looking for jobs.

Of course, it still could have been a disaster, with pushy mothers overruling what their daughters wanted, but for the most part (save for Leanne's family, and even then only slightly) the challenge proceeded with little drama. In fact, the episode was almost a little boring: relatively calm workroom, relatively good designs, relatively happy clients. Hey, at least we had Jerell to light the room up with his wit. From "Come on, Joe, you can work on Nancy Reagan tomorrow" to his story of working at McDonald's and "getting all kinds of free Big-n-Tasties," our boy was on fire last night!
Meanwhile, Kenley dressed her mini-me, we saw pictures of the designers in their own just-entering-the-workforce days, and the fabulous Cynthia Rowley stopped by to judge, so to see my thoughts on the episode, just read more.
- During client selection, Leanne took one look at her client and said, "There's no way this girl just graduated college. She looks like she's 12." Leanne, you look like you're 12!
- Did we know Korto was a mom? The pictures of her daughter were adorable.
- There's a Mood dog, and his/her name is Swatch? Awesome.
- Kenley's conversations with Tim Gunn are amazing. She manages to hear his critiques as glowing compliments. Tim laments that something looks too "menswear," and Kenley responds happily, "right, right, professional!"
- I cracked up at this line from Cynthia Rowley when Suede said his client wanted something to go from day to evening: "I say just change your clothes before you go out."
Now, as for the designs:
- Kenley — Kenley made a variation of her standard '50s dress, this time with a short vest and shiny belt. She lucked out, because the look worked for her mini-me. She also seemed to be holding her tongue on the runway, even if she did crack up (along with her mini-me) during Joe's critique.
- Joe — The minute Joe told his punky, Kelly Osbourne-ish client that he was going to make her a business suit, I was pretty sure he was a goner. Add in some pinstripes and an ill-fitting wrap shirt ("Becky Home Ec-y," as Kors said), and it was exactly what you'd imagine wearing to a job interview . . . in 1988.
- Korto — I didn't get a great look at Korto's dress, but that hardly matters, because I would buy her jacket right now. The judges loved it (Cynthia Rowley admiringly said it looked like it could have been really expensive), and she was easily in the top three.
- Suede — Suede's client was a photographer, so she wanted something that would be easy to move in, and instead, she got a short-ish dress with one of the most wickity-whack jackets we've seen on the runway in a long time. I think it could have worked as a maxidress and without that awful craziness on the jacket sleeves.
- Jerell — Jerell said he wanted to make his client an outfit that was "flirty and sexy in its own awkward way," and he accomplished it with a pencil skirt, a fancy blouse, and a man-ish cardigan. It was a great look for his client, who instantly looked more grownup without a hint of dowdiness.
- Leanne — Leanne got the toughest of the clients (more accurately, the toughest of the mothers), but she still managed to come up with something that would please everyone. It wasn't her best, just a relatively simple dress with a boxy jacket the judges hated (but I liked), but it was enough to get her through.
In the end, Jerell nabbed his second win in a row, while Joe went "outsie-daisy." Ah well — at least he still got to show at Bryant Park. If Suede goes next, I'll be perfectly happy with the top four. You?

kenley's becoming more and more obnoxious, but the preview for next week looks like tim gives her the smack down which i find exciting. i can't believe the judges allow her to laugh during judging like that, without saying anything to her!?!?! and i hated her dress, but i guess it did work for her model. the print just screamed "house coat" to me though lol.
i thought jerell's was the best, but i really did like leanne's as well. i'd def. wear a dress and coat like that. joe's was terrible, even the fit was horrendous.
1I thought it was extremely rude of Kenley to laugh during the judging when Joe was being critiqued. It made me instantly dislike her. And she's constantly rude and condescending to Tim Gunn. I can't wait for her to get the boot.
2Amers you beat me to it!!
3I LOVED Jerrell's and Korto's -- both in general and for their clients. I could see why Jerrell won, though, because as the judges said he really transformed his girl. She seemed so happy, it was sweet.
Joe's and Suede's were horrible, but I thought Joe's was worse. I didn't think Suede's dress was bad, but the jacket - ew. Joe's outfit had nothing redeeming about it.
Kenley -- I could not believe how rude she was laughing at another designer like that on the runway.
4bluesarahlou - great minds thing alike! haha, seriously she needs to go now though
5Kenley is beyond obnoxious.
I didn't think Joe was completely insane for making a suit to interview for jobs in. Last time I checked, in the REAL world, people do still wear suits to interview for REAL jobs. Something a little more creative would have been best for someone looking for a job in graphic design... But I don't think it is totally 1988 to wear a business suit jacket, not everyone is in the fashion industry after all.
6Although I agree that Joe was the right choice, Suede's outfit totally missed the mark. What about high-waisted wide leg pants and a killer blouse with a vest...much more fitting (in my mind) for a photographer. Plus, didn't she ASK for pants!
7I agree Jopper, but that suit would be so out of place in a graphic design interview IMO, and it was hideous!! I have a pinstriped skirt suit and it is a million times more feminine that than one.
8Oh great another challenge to dress a “normal” woman, that never turns out to be flattering to that poor woman does it? These girls all looked like dumpy balls of dough, except for Jerrells.
Jerrell- Knew how to talk to both mother and daughter and really listen to What profession she was going into and her personal style, but managing to keep himself in the mix also
Joe- I have never seen a young girl look more uncomfortable and ready for “what not to wear”. Pinstripes, and a poorly made shirt? Didn’t cut it, thank goodness he is gone.
Kenley- what a Gasbag of self elitism and a one note wonder. I hated the dress she made for her girl, she looked like a vintage troll
Korto- why she doesn’t smile, I don’t know, Her outfit was gross too, I hated that jacket! And the print thing is boring
Leanne- Nice dressing your girl like Polly-F-ing-Anna going to teach school, she can complain about Kenley all she wants she isnt a better designer.
Suede- Let me tell you, Russia is about 10 years behind on the style front and these women asking for bell sleeves almost made me choke on my pizza last night, AND than Suede puts them on there, over a “pucci print” dress that was equally as dated and ugly
9I kinda feel like the editors are setting Kenley up for dismissal soon. There is nothing wrong with confidence and competitiveness, but she is just obnoxious. One of the things I love about Project Runway is that regardless of the designs, the winner always has a heart and you can see some genuine passion, drive, creativity, and she is not showing any of that...You can be as sassy as you want (jerell!) but you have to be likeable...
Random thought, but I actually think that Leanne's dress would've been okay for Joe's client because it has that unique touch that designers needs.
10Kenley has been and continues to be extremely disrespectful to everyone on this show -- her fellow contestants, Tim Gunn, the judges. There is not one person she hasn't been a b*tch to. I will lose respect for the judges, Tim, and the producers if they keep her in any longer.
11I barely watched last night's episode but Kenley was ANNOYING. SHe is so disrespectful and she has only one design aesthetic: '40s and '50s clothes. That is not going to help her become a great edesigner if her fashion is stuck in the past. Her dress last night was kinda cute though, but I hope that either Kenley or Suede are kicked off next week. No one is allowed to talk to Tim Gunn that way!
I really hope it's Leanne, Korto, and Jerell in the final 3.
12I thought Kenley was just being edited poorly and made to look bad, but the boyfriend mentioned that there's only so much editing they can do. Additionally, he pointed out that last year they tried to edit it to make Christian come off as the catty biatch...but he was still likeable.
Anyhow, LOOOOOOVED Jerell's outfit...I wish I had the body type to pull that off!
13i am so ready for kenley to go.
14her attitude is for the birds.
saying she's going to set heidi straight last week and in the previews for next week she tries telling tim he's wrong also?
really.... who does she think she is?
Ok, Jerrell deserved the win. He really transformed his client & was super sweet to her. Joe---pin stripes even AFTER the girl said she doesn't like them & then the whole pocket square idea--out of touch, much?? And Kenley is the rudest, most obnoxious girl ever; she needs to get a grip ASAP! She's disrespectful in a way some children aren't. She's just a whiney little know-it-all. She rolled her eyes & cried b/c she didn't win. And stop putting tulle on everything, girl!!!
15I am so over Kenley she needs to shut her mouth. Her overconfidence is draining. She is not doing anything that interesting. I am supporting our hometown girl Leanne. I do know that Tim Gunn was here in Portland filming last week so that is very exciting. I also want to see Korto and Jerell.
16Kenley needs to go.
Leanne for the win!
17I liked Kenley in the beginning but now she is just plain rude. I love how she said Tim Gunn doesn't "get" her design aesthetic and that she never listens to him. That is so wrong. BUT Leanne has listened to Tim repeatedly and won quite a few times. Kenley should take a lesson from Leanne!
18ANd just a spare thought....IMO Leanne is a great designer when it calls for something extra but when it's time for the "real woman" challenges she is average. This dress was a little under average & she didn't make her look any older. And she was a part of the tragic bermuda short making team with Blayne in the Lipstick Jungle challenge. Her clothes look great on size 2 models who can use all the ruffles, pleats, noodles or whatever to their advantage but, honestly, on a "real womam"(hate how that sounds) it just doesn't look flattering at all. Just a thought.......
19Haute...that's how a lot of Christian's stuff was last season, and he won.
20And I'm sorry, bad editing or not, Kenley still laughed while another designer was being judged. That's rude and uncalled for...plain and simple.
21I know, I know blue-I see a lot of similarties in their final collectins, too. But I just think thatin order to be considered the next great American designer then the person should be well-rounded; high-end & ready-to-wear. Not taking anything away from Leanne or Christian at all, though. And I dig your avi!
22for some reason the photo galleries of all the designer's final collections is up on bravotv.com. based on that i would think korto is gonna win it.
i really liked kenley in the beginning, but laughing on the runway TWICE at other designers is just baffling. that is so crude and mean.
i want jerell's outfit, it was awesome
23i can't stand kenley. can't stand her. glad joe's finally gone. here's hoping that kenley's next!
24I actually went to highshchool with Kenley and the funny thing is she hasn't changed one bit!! Can't wait to see what happens next week!
25ok last week i didn't think jerrell should win but this week i totally did- he really did the best job for his client.
korto's i totally wasn't feeling this week. i didn't like the jacket at all. i normally like her stuff though so i want her to stay. same with leanne- the dress was cute, the jacket wasn't but she's normally good so. and she actually listened to her client and adapted the dress and the client loved it- unliked suede who didn't listen.
suede= tacky.
joe= clueless lol
nancy reagan comment cracked me up.
kenley is super annoying- i mute her now.
lyl i love that your bf watches with you and pays attention lol
26I actually liked Kenley in the beginning, but dear lord is she getting obnoxious. I just can't believe she keeps laughing when other people are criticized. Seriously, bite your tongue if you giggle that easily. It's so freakin' rude!
Conversely, I thought Jerrell was annoying at first but now I really like him. The pocket square thing was hysterical. Just as an aside though, why was he wearing that weird hat? It looked like something out of Lord of the Rings.
27As soon as I saw the blazer in Joe's sketch, I thought, "It's Joe, he's out."
28Kenley is so petulant. I was excited to see Tim tell her to drop the sarcasm and facetiousness in the preview for next week. I mean, that's about as pissed as Tim Gunn gets.
yay jerrell...he's so cute..sans the feathered hat which i thought he wore only as a dig to kenley's mulitude of annoying feather bands...enough with the feathers....enough of kenley period! and this isn't this first time she's laughed on the runway @ another designer....i really hate her...she's so obnoxious and egotistical
suede should have been gone by now and terri should have have still been there
and joe...good lord what were you thinking! nancy regan comment...hilarious!
29Okay, my favorite quote of the night was from Leanne when she said that Suede's model was going to audition for "Selena" - actually laughed out loud. Suede needs to learn how to make a pair of pants. His poor photographer.
30Kenley is so lucky she got the "vintage chic" lover for this challenge. Her laughter during Joe's critique was so below the base. Totally uncalled for and it made her look like SHE was about 12. And BOTH of them laughed. I wonder how Heidi and the other judges reacted to that. That's one thing I'm sure they will all be commenting on in the final "Reunion" episode. That's alright, Kenley. keep laughing. It's Suede and then it's your turn to go. She will not make it to Bryant Park with her attitude and her limited vision.
31Suede's design was downright hideous. He needs to go next. Then Kenley. I'll be fine with either of the remaining three winning, though Korto has the softest spot in my heart.
32Kenley needs to go...plain and simple. I'll take 3rd person Suede over that 25 year old snotty brat who insults Tim Gunn (of all people) any day!
33I loved Kenley and she's still my favorite, but I wish she'd stop being annoying. But Entertainment Weekly's recap of last week's episode pointed out that they always pick a villian and edit them eing b*tchy to everyone (i.e. Santino). Soo...
SO happy Joe's gone! I HATED him (and Keith) from the very beginning. They never deserved to be there.
Can anyone explain to me why they all end up getting to go to Bryant Park this season!?! What's going on?
34fashion --
They all showed at Bryant Park in order to protect the identities of the true final three. They want to avoid all spoilers.
35Thanks, Mouse! I get that part. I dunno, it just frustrates me that there's not a real prize then, if nearly everyone gets to show. And why are there so few pieces in each collection and isn't it a waste of the designers time if they end up getting cut out of the final TV airing. Uh.
36Urg... I don't know why this is bothering me so much!?!
I agree that Kenley is completely obnoxious, but it's also been pointed out that she has a nervous laugh. When she laughed at Daniel, it was because of the awkward silence, so maybe that's what her problem was this time. And they were making jokes about the pocket square earlier. For some reason I'm trying to defend her. She was my favorite at the beginning and I think I'm still trying to hold on to some hope.
I completely disagree with the judges' criticism of the teacher's dress. Being a teacher, I think that dress is completely appropriate. I would wear it any day. But maybe that's just because I would wear anything Leeanne makes.
And I'm SO HAPPY Joe got Auf'd!
37LEANNE, KORTO, AND JERELL ALL THE WAY FOR TOP 3. The end.
38I am also sick on Kenley. But PR may keep her around anyway. Remember the season with that abnoxious tatoo neck troll, Jeffery (aka winner of his season). So just because someone has a sucky attitude doesn't mean they won't keep them. Of any of them, I really like Jerel===he seems to get along with everyone, when he partnered up and when he has clients.
39Korto's last model is Bianca for ANTM!
40Opps that should say from not for.
41I love Jerel's design. I would buy it in an instant. I don't like Kenley at all. She's an obnoxious brat.
42I've had enough with Kenley too.
And all I could think when they showed an old picture of her was: "Oh she got a nose job?" Seriously, I almost didn't recognize her.
43I hear ya Haute. If I ever went on the show I'd be one of the "real women" that they'd dread designing for. I'd never fit into the size 2 stuff they put out normally
And thanks!
44My favorite was the comment someone made about wondering who was going to get "Head of Lettuced".
I loved Jerrel's whole outfit. It was beautiful. I also really liked Kato's jacket and would wear it everyday!
45kenley needs her TEETH KICKED IN...by me.
