The woman who spent 16 years bringing her adaptation of the 1939 female-led comedy The Women to modern audiences is diving right into her next project: an adaptation of Erica Jong's Fear of Flying. Originally published in 1973 when Jong was 30 years old, the novel was considered shocking and revolutionary. Here's the synopsis from the back cover:
Isadora Wing was afraid of flying. She was also afraid of her own beauty, brains, physical appetites, and intellectual curiosity. Then, while on a trip to Vienna with her brilliant, handsome psychiatrist husband, Isadora met the man who embodied her most erotic fantasies — and who offered her a chance to conquer all her fears. What happened to Isadora then was a wild, sexually extravagant bolt across Europe that had worldwide reverberations — in the most uninhibited, delicious, wonderfully witty, erotic novel a woman ever wrote.
According to an item in Variety, director Diane English plans to make her adaptation R-rated (I would assume so!), and "[i]f she has her druthers, she'll star the often-Oscar-nominated Kate Winslet in the role of the sex-driven Isadora Wing."
I could certainly see Kate Winslet in this role; she's stupendous at playing characters on life-changing journeys. Have you read Fear of Flying? Do you think it will translate well to the big screen?

Oooo sounds interesting and Kate Winslet is a great actress for the part! If she gets her I will want to watch this movie.
1Yes yes yes! I love this book. I could read it over and over and over. I hope Jong's spirit stays alive in the film. A lot of the book is about being independent and not needing a husband (or any man) to define you. I always picture it being made into a movie when I read it. (I do this with a lot of books, though.)
2And I would hope it's R-rated, seeing as the first chapter is about "The Zipless F***."

4i've never heard of this story but i might check it out when i'm at the book store next time since if it's being made into a movie - i'd prefer to read it first. i hate when you see a movie and then read the book since you're picturing certain actors in each role already.
5Diane English did such a great job a destroying a classic movie, why not destroy a classic book for her next gig. Sigh.

7I think this is more appropriate than the re make of the women. I read the book and it seems like it would have a huge place in the market right now.
8Blech, I thought it was a terrible book and is outdated now. Jong graduated from college in 1963 and published Fear of Flying in 1973. English graduated from college in 1970 - I just don't see her being able to update the book and making it in any way relevant today.
9With Kate Winslet in the title role, this probably can work on screen. Though I'm not a big fan of Jong's book, I can see it speaking to today's audience if the updates are carefully done.
10This sounds...interesting I guess. Very erotic, obviously. I think Kate Winslet could do this part justice.
11I graduated from college in 2005 and certainly enjoyed the book, so I don't think updating it for a modern audience will be challenge. I agree, Linda, that any updates will have to be carefully executed.
