Often, a TV show will have parts I absolutely love but won't quite hold up as a whole. "The Riches," though, is the rare show that's the opposite: It's lacking in the details, but over its first four episodes, I've found it well worth watching.

When I'm in the mood to nitpick, I can harp on a number of things about the show: Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver sound so fake as Southerners; the part of the story about the travelers' camp where they used to live, which I thought would be fascinating, has become the most boring piece of the show; and I simply cannot believe that the original Doug and Cherien Rich have not been found dead yet by curious relatives or friends.
And yet, the show has a certain overall effect that makes me stick with it. Wayne/Doug (Izzard), especially, is compelling as a con man piling lie on top of lie to keep his new life afloat. Dahlia/Cherien (Driver) — though still a caricature with her myriad addictions — is becoming more tolerable. There was a scene in last week's episode where Wayne (pretending to be someone else, of course) placed a phone call to Dahlia during a scam and turned it into an apology for the mess their lives had become, and it was absolutely heartbreaking, horrid accents aside. And while two of the three kids' stories aren't quite clicking for me yet, middle child Di Di is fun to watch as the member of the family who seems to be adjusting to "normal" life the fastest. Tonight's episode sounds especially intriguing: Dahlia takes a job as a dental hygienist, presumably to have access to troves of her favorite drugs, and Wayne faces a tough situation at work that could expose him as a total fraud. I couldn't find a video preview, so check out this clip about the life of Doug Rich instead:

Hmmm. Never heard of this one either. Well I have nothing to watch on Monday nights, so I'll give it a shot. Thanks Buzz!
Booyaka!
1I feel the same way about the show, it is oddly intriguing...but I wonder how long it will stay on air!
2I guess I am the only one who isn't bothered by the Southern accents. Maybe because I am Southern, most of the accents I hear on tv and movies (with the exception of real southern actors) aren't very good, so I'm used to it.
Style Before Comfort!
3The Riches looks interesting. Thanks for the review, Buzz. I'll try to catch up with Doug and family tonight.
4isn't Eddie Izzard english? meaning not only does he have to speak "american" but he has to do "southern american".. thats pretty talented. i dunno.. i still can't help thinking of him as a transvestite doing stand up on bbcamerica.
5I like and watch this show, but I think they're pushing it having him successfully pretend to be a lawyer. It's kind of a skilled profession...
6I saw the first episode and liked it, but then I missed the others. I looked to see if any were going to be rerun, and so I learned there is a marathon starting from the beginning (5 shows) for anyone who is just starting. It's this Friday, April 13, starting at 9 p.m. (that's East Coast) on FX. Just thought I'd post it so that if anyone wants to start from the beginning and get all caught up or has missed a few episodes, they can tune in!
7I feel exactly the same way about this show that you do, Buzz. I think the amin thing that keeps bringing me back is Eddie Izzard and his charisma on screen. Even with the terrible accent, he makes the show watchable.
8I completely enjoy the show. The accents don't bother me. Eddie's is very neutral (and sometimes slightly British despite the effort) and Minnie's is pretty good actually. I live in Alabama so I can tell you from experience we have some way over the top twangs occasionally. And since "Redneck Speak" isn't an observed language yet
, she does a pretty fair job.
9i LOVE LOVE LOVE eddie izzard! i've loved him since i saw him on hbo in "dress to kill" and then i went and watched him do a show live! he's soooo great! i could just kiss him. hey, and, he "fancies girls"! his accent in this show is very british at times, but it's eddie, so i forgive him. minnie's is good. i just don't like how she said, "i'm scaredy schoo" instead of "i'm scared of school". i keep saying it now. but i feel the same way about the show as buzz about it. great storyline, weird details.
