In this weird TV season, Fringe has been one of the few shows to get any buzz — partially because of the talent involved, partially because it leaked online, and partially because it's one of the only pilots critics got to see. With the 95-minute first episode out of the way, I can't wait to hear what you all made of it. Is it the next great sci-fi show — or a ripoff of The X-Files and all others that came before it?
A couple of nonspoilery thoughts first: I think Fringe would have been fine with a regular hour-long pilot. Parts of this supersized episode dragged for me — though, granted, the draggy parts were sandwiched between a strong opening and a ridiculously action-packed ending. Also, if there's a hero of the episode for me, it's Joshua Jackson. His character, Peter, is a genius with a gambling problem, daddy issues, and a sarcastic attitude. And he's also a total badass! He takes down a key suspect by punching him in the face, then elicits a confession by crushing the dude's hand with a coffee mug. He's the most fun character to watch so far.
Now, to talk about the mysteries of Fringe, just read more.
So, here's what (I think) we know so far: There's this thing called The Pattern, a bunch of incidents happening worldwide that involve various bits of fringe science: chemical compounds that dissolve flesh; people coming out of comas and suddenly writing down top-secret codes; children disappearing then reappearing years later without having aged a day. The flight from Hamburg to Boston that kicks off the episode is one of them, and that's how Olivia Dunham gets herself roped into the story — but her boyfriend and partner was already somehow involved, and that will be one of our mysteries going forward. There's also a possibly evil corporation (Massive Dynamic) that may be responsible for some of these scientific developments, and its leader once shared a lab with Dr. Bishop, providing the link that ties everyone together.
A few things that jumped out at me:
- Maybe it was intentional, but Dr. Bishop seemed to veer between being harmlessly daffy and completely off his rocker. Did practicing science help restore his sanity? Because the guy who peed his pants and had a scalpel-shoving outburst seemed wildly different from the one who cheerfully watched Spongebob Squarepants while eating Chinese food with a cow.
- Regardless, he's good comic relief in addition to being a mad scientist. "The only thing better than a cow is a human. Unless you need milk. Then you really need a cow."
- Olivia, on the other hand, gets some really cringey lines. "I just want to go back to before"? Ugh.
- After Joshua Jackson, my second-favorite actor/character so far is Blair Brown as Nina Sharp. She's completely chilling — I get shivers when I think about her saying "question him" — and she's got one of the coolest robotic arms I've seen in a while (I guess that's what a $10 million pilot budget will buy you). The Massive Dynamic plot line in general is a big draw for me; I do love a good global conspiracy.
- Another breakout star: Jean the cow. Heh.
- How do you think that big budget panned out special effects-wise? The translucent skin looked pretty fake to me, but the stuff on the plane was more realistically gory. On the low-tech end, I loved the old-school look of Bishop's Harvard lab. Were those Bunsen burners and beakers I spotted?
- I know Fringe is a series we're not supposed to overthink, but what's with the leaf/frog/apple icons?
Did Fringe do enough to hook you? Or did it seem too much like something you'd seen before?

Damn I missed it!
I totally forgot about it and I went out
to dinner with my boyfriend.
1it was AWESOME. i will totally be watching every week. was never an X-files fan, so i was surprised i liked this so much.
2any show that has a) joshua jackson b) a cow and c) a robotic arm is a-ok in my book. her arm looked completely CGI'ed to me, so maybe a few extra mil could have helped? heh. all in all, i thoroughly enjoyed it.
i was wondering the same thing about the frogs/leaves/6 fingered hands. although we did get to spot the "re-animation" chamber at massive dynamic at the end and it had the same leaf on the front. so perhaps they're codes/symbols for each of the fringe science phenoms? just a guess.
also, olivia totes reminds me of cate blanchett. is that just me? she's super gorg.
3rileycantina - yes, she reminds me of Cate Blanchett too, and also a little Ellen Pompeo.
I liked it, didn't blow me away, but it feels like one that will just get better as it goes along - like it has a lot more up it's sleeve if you know what I mean?
I also wondered about those symbols before the commercials. I think they must have some meaning, as riley pointed out the leaf was on the door to the massive dynamic room. ....
4The symbols struck me as too overly "Lost" but I digress...
All in all, thought the pilot was ok. Agreed, 95 minutes too long. Could've done with a few less scenes of Dunham looking perplexed. And the second I saw the actor playing the partner/bf, I knew he would be a slimeball. That actor always plays a slimeball! lol.
5I thought it was good - although felt the same, rivrchild - didn't blow me away but feel that it will improve over time. Joshua Jackson was great and Jean the cow stole the show for me!
6Joshua Jackson is awesome, I'll follow him anywhere. I loved him in the pilot and I have a feeling his character will only get better. I also really liked Dr. Bishop- I can't wait to see what the series will bring. I really want to know what the deal is with the symbols and the six fingered hand!
7I LOVE THIS SHOW!
8I second pop
9This one is def. going on my must watch tv list every week
Jean the cow heh. That made me laugh.
I recorded it and probably won't get to watch until Friday, but I've had the premiere date marked on my calendar ever since Buzz originally dished about the upcoming JJ Abrams show! I'm excited!
10I watched and I liked it!
11I liked it. I didn't love it. I could see Olivia's character getting annoying at times. I also thought they pushed too many one liners on Joshua Jackson...we get it, he's the funny one.
I really like the idea of it and I love Joshua Jackson so I'll keep watching. I'm guessing when it's not quite as long it will be a little more engaging.
12I thought it was pretty good. I really hope it doesnt turn out too much the the X-files though........Lance Riddick is so creepy...I love him!
13i liked it but wasn't blown away. i too saw a bit of 'Lost' in there. and what is up with all the men being chauvenists? 'sweetheart', 'honey'? and Olivia really needs some better lines and to work on her acting skills. Yikes, sounds like I didn't like it but I did. I will watch it and know with the talent behind it will only get better.
14I live in Toronto, where the series is filmed, and it's sooo weird to see the ROM (and it's extra crystals) as well as some U of T buildings in it too..
15I really liked it...if Chuck didn't happen first, I would have thought that the Sarah/Bryce storyline was making fun of Olivia/Scott and the scene with Olivia talking to John when he was in a coma made me think of the movie The Cell.
I am definitely going to stick with it. (and second the love for Joshua Jackson's character, the cow, the mad scientist, etc)
16THAT'S what the X-Files movie should have been like!!!! I really liked the pilot ep and I think this show will be pretty awesome. I heard Joshua give an interview where he mentioned this show will be a little like lost in that there will be an overall conspiracy and everything can mean something, but that it would also have have a definate ending on each episode. So if you are a casual watcher or don't feel like mulling over what that leaf rotating on the screen of the hand scanner meant, you can still enjoy the show!
17I really loved this show! Joshua Jackson was my favorite character by far. I agree that the symbols must mean something since the leaf was on the Massive Dynamic hand pad.
My motion graphic design hubby was very impressed with the robotic arm and the way they put the names of places in 3-D.
18I liked it and will definitely tune in for more. Most impressive thing of the show by far was Joshua Jacskon. I thought he was shockingly great. Also, does anyone else remember Olivia's boyfriend as the replacement Jack on Days of our Lives? Probably not, but I totally had a crush on him!
19I really enjoyed the pilot last night. I'm still not in love with the Olivia character...I think her accent is a bit weird, is she American? For me, she was the weak link, I'm not convinced that she is a kick-butt special agent, ya know? Perhaps because I was such an Alias fan and Jennifer Garner was SO kick-butt in the pilot, it's tough not to compare. I enjoyed everyone else, especially John Noble, he was fantastic. I'll definitely keep watching it!
20LOVE it. The way it was shot definately reminded me of Alias..the music and end of scene shots. And combined with the X-files stuff..I am hooked.. More Joshua Jackson!!
21And yes I also love Jean the cow
*thehee* I campagin to keep Jean the cow around for
more episodes. I definately love the light bits of the show with the cow, and Sponge Bob..and even the peeing in the car "Just a squirt.." part. Humour is shows like that is always welcomed!
22I enjoyed it, although it didn't hook me like the pilot for Alias or Lost did. I thought it was too long and could have been trimmed down- although I loved the short commercial breaks. But at one point I got bored and did the dishes and just listened to it in the background... whereas other shows like Terminator (for example) I am glued to my seat and at the end yelling "omg when is the next one??"
I knew Olivia's boyfriend would die in the episode, just like in Alias (although it seems he might be back in some ways...). And of course the airplane was reminiscent of Lost. I wonder if JJ is afraid of flying?
I will keep watching and hope it picks up the pace a bit.
23I LOVED IT!
shopaholichunny- if you don't want to watch the pilot on your computer it's re-airing Sunday night.
lulula- she's Australian.
I am really excited for this season. They have a prequel comic. There's was a prequel to the prequel that was given out at ComiCon for free and the comic book series will have 6 issues, 1 coming out each month starting last week. I read the Comicon one online and it detailed the other instances in the Pattern a little more. I bought the first issue this morning. It was okay- the only interesting part to me was that they went into how Bishop and William Bell met.
24I liked it. I especially enjoyed Joshua Jackson's snarkiness. Snarkiness in that voice, yeah.
It was fun, smart and creepy. All that I expected.
Though what is it with JJ Abrams and starting off pilots with trouble on planes? And visiting mental institutions?
To the recap: I think the Mad Scientist veering from normal to wacky was pretty on par for a "crazy but not really crazy person who has been locked away for 17 years". It worked for me.
25Six fingered hands? I didn't notice that.
26It must be a shout-out to The Princess Bride!
I LOVED it. Cannot wait until next week. And I even missed the first 15 minutse of it so that goes to show you how much I liked it that I didn't even need to see the beginning.
27I watched it and loved it, def. in my must see list of shows. And I second that Pasekitty, I too will follow Joshua Jackson anywhere
28I really liked it, I can't wait to see more !
29My husband and I watched this last night and OMG, it was very, very good for TV! Such great talent and it was very fun to watch...thouroughly enjoyed it!! This will be our new number 1 show!!
30Wow I must be the only one that thought this show was absolutely ridiculously stupid. I got through about 25 minutes of it before i got soo bored i had to find something else to watch.
31Buzz, the apple icon, at least, has human embryos inside the seeds. I don't know what that means, but it's interesting.
32totally hooked.
33I thought it was terrible. I couldn't get into the characters like I could on JJ Abrams Lost, or even Alias. My two teens walked out to do homework.
34it was okay. i'll have to watch a few more episodes to see if it gets better. i guess i just expected more from a j.j abrams show. i knew right away that they'd kill off the bf so that olivia can get with pacey. (sorry, he'll always be pacey to me)
35fireyelectra- the apple thing is awesome! I didn't notice that.
36The seahorse has a Golden Spiral on it. Not sure if there's anything special about the leaf....
@avacado_seed: THANK YOU I thought I was going nuts! The whole time it was ... that looks like Toronto, no no, I don't remember hearing that they were shooting here - but that has to be U of T! Hmm, I might have to do a little snooping soon to see if I can find Joshua Jackson's fav coffee shop
37we're not supposed to overthink a jj abrams show????
looks like i missed the memo. liked the hand with 6 fingers and the collapsing jaw. awesome.
38I really liked it but my favorite part was when Olivia called Peter thinking she would have to coerce him to keep helping her and he was like "we'll meet you out front". It (he) was cute. And the pilot is repeating this Sunday for anyone who missed it.
39I loveeeed it ! Tuesdays are now one of my favourite
40TV days ! from the very beginning I was hooked.
There was something weird with each of the pictures, like the hand having more fingers. There was a greek phi on the back of the frog, and the apple seeds had fetuses in them.
41I was completely plugged into this show within the first five minutes. To be honest I was only going to watch for Joshua Jackson but it totally appealed to my Alias, X-files hole that I miss terrible. Sooo good, can't wait till next week!
42caryatid — I know, right? JJ's done a lot of interviews talking about how this is a show you don't have to follow as closely as his others. I guess we'll see ...
43eghhh...not impressed. Had high hopes as I love his other shows. Will try another episode or two maybe I'll feel more drawn to the characters/storyline.
44Absolutely brilliant..all of it, but as soon as Peter asked Olivia "When do we leave"...I thought to myself, anytime you like!
Joshua is HOT!
45I finally had the chance to watch it last night and I love it. I do think 95 minutes was a tad too long, but boy did I love those commercial breaks (nice and short). I love Joshua Jackson and his character. I will say that I kept having LOTR flashbacks whenever Dr. Bishop talked about "my son". Olivia did do the "perplexed" look a little more times than necessary. But I definitely am in for the ride. Tuesdays just got a bit more interesting for me!!!!
46I wasn't planning on watching, but my boyfriend TIVO'd it and I thought I'd give it a try. I definitely liked it, and I'm going to keep watching. Plus, I agree that cow + Pacey + robotic arm = fun show.
47OMG - this show was amazing. I was scared out of my mind at the beginning and stayed riveted through the rest of the episode. I think the 2hr pilot was awesome, and love the unlikely trio of crimesolvers, I'll definitely keep watching.
48The pilot was great! I actually liked all the characters - Olivia's gorgeous, and Peter is a perfect role for Joshua Jackson. I actually thought the doctor's swings between insane ramblings and lucid moments were pretty on-point. I'm definitely looking forward to the next episodes.
49I really liked it but I felt like it went on too long. Hopefully it doesn't get crappy and doesn't get canceled like most JJA shows tend to do.
