Soon the days will be getting shorter and the Fall movies will hit theaters, but I wanted to reflect on this Summer's movie season one last time. Even though at times it felt like there was one major blockbuster after another out each weekend and records were smashed, it turns out the box office totals were just below last year's — and it could have been lower if not for the major success of The Dark Knight.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The Dark Knight phenomenon well compensated for one fewer $300 million-plus domestic performance compared with last Summer, when four films surpassed that milestone." In other words, Batman didn't just save Gotham City, he saved Hollywood! Kind of kidding . . . but not really.
Do you feel like Hollywood earned your money this Summer when compared to past blockbuster seasons? When it comes to your own wallet, was 2008 one for the books?

Tropic Thunder, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, The Dark Knight... it was a great summer for movies.
1Best summer movie year in ages!
2I saw Wanted and The Dark Knight. Both were great movies to watch this summer. I wasn't interested in the other ones though.
3This really was a great summer for movies- the blockbusters definitely came through.
4Dark Knight, Wanted, Iron Man. They were worth it.
5Oooo sorry I forgot about Hellboy. I loved that movie too.
6Indiana JOnes and Wall-E were the only ones I saw, but they were both worth it. Still hoping to catch Dark Knight before it goes away, maybe even on IMAX.
7iron man, hancock, wanted, dark knight, the incredible hulk
8all great movies that were worth it
The dark knight is such a great movie, it totally deserves the major blockbuster!!
9It was a mixed bag for me, but I was mostly pleased with the summer blockbusters this year.
The Dark Knight was awesome, but I also think it was a tad overhyped. Don't get me wrong, the movie was really good, but I didn't think it was THAT much better than Batman Begins. I though Heath's performance as the Joker, on the other hand, was definitely as good as everyone said it was.
I also really loved (in no particular order) Iron Man, Prince Caspian, Wall-E, and Tropic Thunder.
Sex and the City, Wanted, and Get Smart were pretty good, not great though.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Step Brothers were disappointing and not as good as I expected them to be.
10Of the movies pictured, 4 have guns, 5 are based on either comic books or superheros, 2 are comedies and 1 defies easy categorization (WALL-E....hurrah for originality!).
11I saw a lot of summer movies this year, and most of them were better than I expected them to be. Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Wall-E were all great. I'm still hoping to see Tropic Thunder. I saw The Incredible Hulk too, but I wasn't very big on it. If anything I laughed the whole way through it, so at least I was entertained, if not in the manner that the makers expected it to be.
12yes, i think that all in all it was worth my money for these great movies. there were so many movies for me to choose from, and well...it was a great way to spend the summer.
13I also wanted to check out Pineapple Express. But I can wait until it's out for rent.
14This has been the busiest summer of my life and I've been the most strapped for cash, so I have only seen Dark Knight. That one was just beyond awesome. I'll definitely be checking out some of the others on Netflix soon.
15Tropic Thunder was good (i saw it twice), Wanted was ok, Dark Knight was good, Indiana Jones was good, I didn't see Wall-E but I want to, the rest was whatever.
16I loved going to the movies this summer. Wall-E and The Dark Knight were completely worth 9 dollars to see.
17i'm the dvd girl, but Wanted was so worth going to the cinema!
18The blockbuster movies that made my summer this year were definitely 'The Dark Knight', 'Wall-E' and 'Iron Man'. I think in terms of offering depth and quality in big budget commercial cinema, this year's films have surpassed those of previous years. I have never had a summer during which the films released have been as thought provoking as they were entertaining.
Granted that a lot of the films released this summer were predictably vapid but I also felt like there were some real breakthroughs (like the films mentioned above) that have redefined the manner in which summer popcorn flicks are to be made.
For once, I'm actually excited about next year's roundup of summer movies.
19We have an old theater in the downtown area that runs on donations to have it restored. We pay $10 to $12 for my husband and I and drinks and popcorn. We may have to wait a month or two to see a big blockbuster, but when money is tight and you need a date night so you both don't go crazy, it's worth it.
20The Dark Knight, Iron man, The incredible Hulk, Hellboy 2, Hancock... GREAT summer for comic movies!
21Wall-E
The Dark Knight ( Saw it in the theatre and IMAX)
Pineapple Express
Wanted
Sex and the City
This is the first summer I actually saw more than just one movie and it was awesome!
22Oh my and Step Brothers!
23Only Dark Knight, Wall-E and maybe Ironman. For Dark Knight, it was Heath Ledger that was worth it all. For Wall-E those beautiful space odyssey visuals and the touching story, very worth it. Ironman, I can't remember why I liked it but I did. But Wanted was not worth it, no matter how hot James McAvoy is.
