- Raining McCain. John McCain's presidential nomination acceptance speech on Thursday broke Barack Obama's record from last week, bringing in about 38.9 million viewers. That's roughly 500,000 more than Obama's speech and is now the highest-rated nomination acceptance speech ever.
- 9021-oh! The premiere of the new 90210 became the highest-rated premiere of any scripted series in CW history on Tuesday, drawing an average of 4.9 million viewers over the two hours. Encouragingly for the network, the show actually gained a few viewers between its first and second hours.
- Spreading the gossip. Gossip Girl couldn't match those numbers, but it still did well for itself with 3.4 million viewers, its most-watched episode since its premiere a year ago.
- The bar? Consider it raised. Meanwhile, Raising the Bar became the highest-rated premiere on any cable network ever with 7.7 million viewers. The Closer held the old record with 5.26 million viewers.
- Saying farewell to The Shield. In its final season, The Shield drew 2.1 million viewers for its premiere, about the same as the premiere of its previous season.

i think that there's something to be said about how high ratings are lately. even during the olympics - more people tuned in than EVER before.
i think that it's pretty impressive that more people were watching mccain...but that's also probably due to the fact that people don't know as much about palin and wanted to hear more. i think that it's a great thing
i'm very happy to hear about the premier of 90210 too. i had started to lose faith in the show but i guess it did really well huh? and the same for GG
i'm also thrilled that MPG's show raising the bar did so nicely too. that's a good thing for them.
1The "new" 90210 started already? Oh boy.... *rolls eyes*
I certainly watched McCain, and so did most of my friends who are Democrats. We watched it to 1) scare ourselves 2) rally our party 3) gather our counter-arguments.
On the other hand, I didn't watch the DNC / Obama. I only read the important speeches online after.
(It was my first week of college at a new school, okay??
)
2I think ratings might be tied to gas prices (like everything else). Seems like people stayed closer to home this year instead of burning fuel and when you are home, you watch TV.
JaeB -- I watched McCain for the same reason and I'm sure we weren't the only ones.
Finally, I watched Raising the Bar and it was just not good. Maybe it was just a slow start, but I think the ratings are going to take a hit next week.
3I also am a Democrat and I watched the John McCain speech, only because I wanted to see what his plans are for America if he becomes president and what he had to say about Barack Obama. But I watched several speeches from both the DNC and the RNC, McCain's was just one of them.
John McCain looks ridiculous in that picture above.
4Good to know the +500,000 were probably fellow Democrats!
John DOES look ridiculous in that pic. I've had to show a few people that one.
