You want to get a meeting with Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro? Good luck. According to a story in Variety today, he's booked . . . for about the next decade.
Del Toro, who's already committed five years — five years — to directing and co-writing The Hobbit, has now lined up his next four projects for Universal after that. And they're doozies:
- Del Toro will remake Frankenstein, which is apparently a personal fascination for him to the point where he "has made his home a memorabilia shrine to the Karloff monster" from the 1931 film.
- He'll also remake Slaughterhouse-Five, saying it will be a more literal interpretation of the Kurt Vonnegut novel than the 1972 film was.
- The third remake is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where del Toro also plans to more closely translate Robert Louis Stevenson's original work to film and "explore the addictive high the repressed Jekyll experienced as his murderous alter ego."
- The fourth project — which Universal executives think will be the first one he tackles after The Hobbit — is an adaptation of the forthcoming novel Drood, in which the author speculates about what happened to Charles Dickens after he survived a major train crash.
Oh, and that's not all: He's also producing a couple of films and has some personal pet projects in the pipeline, too. There's also the possibility of another Hellboy sequel — though del Toro joked to Variety (probably accurately) that Ron Perlman will be almost 60 by the time he gets around to it. Hey, the more of del Toro's unique visual storytelling that comes to movie theaters, the happier I am; you?

i'm with you on this one Buzz...and it's sooo nice to know he's doing "literal" interpretations of the books/remakes. at first i was a bit skeptical reading that title (i think hollywood has given me a phobia of remakes i swear,
), but i have so much respect and confidence for del
Toro that I KNOW he won't try to make any of the three as craptastic as the other past hollywood remakes.
he'll definitely give the books a proper artistic treatment.
1I'm so happy that he's getting this much work. He's a fantastic director and his visual style is amazing. Can't wait for his films to come out and as a fellow Mexican and film lover I couldn't be prouder!
2ooo Slaughter House 5 I trust del Toro to do it right. This makes me excited.
3Based on what I've seen of his work in Hellboy and especially Pan's Labyrinth, I agree - the more Guillermo Del Toro the better! And the projects he's outlined for the next decade of his career, seem to fit so thrillingly with his directorial style! The man's simply one of the most distinct and talented visionaries in cinema
4well at least he knows that he has job stability assuming that he can stay 'on time' with all of his projects. it's got to be hard to have that kind of pressure on you but i'm sure he can handle it.
the hobbit - hmm..i've read the book, but i'm not sure that i'd want to see the movie although i'm sure there's a large audience for it. people were in love with the lord of the rings movies right?
5awesome!!! I love his movies and these all sound like awesome projects (though I'm with you ilanac about The Hobbit..meh for me, but I know there are people out there who will be psyched).
6wow a Del Toro Slaughterhouse? i cant wait
7I'm interested in seeing what he does with Slaughterhouse 5. I'll probably want to see his Frankenstein too.
8I love anything that Del Toro does. He's amazing. I so proud that a Mexican director like him is doing so much good work.
