The "design something for a fashion icon" challenge is nothing new for Project Runway, but what was rather refreshing about Wednesday's episode was that the icon this time truly was a legend. The designers were asked to design something that would impress Diane von Furstenberg — she of the wrap dress — enough that she would consider including it in her next collection. That was a pretty big deal for all the designers (except maybe Blayne, who would have preferred an Olsen twin), and they really let the pressure show as they worked on the challenge.

In fact, none of them let Diane's iconic status get to them more than the typically smooth Kenley. She was sobbing so much through all of her early interviews, in fact, that I was convinced she'd be the one sent home. Then again, maybe her tears came because things in the workroom were so tense — I'm not sure I've ever seen a season of Project Runway where all the designers seemed to dislike each other so early. There's a feud a'brewing between Leanne and Kenley, another between Korto and Terri, still another between Terri and . . . everyone else. The Parsons workroom just doesn't seem like a very happy place to be right now.

That said, the designers still turned out some iconic looks of their own — plus some requisite disasters — so to hear my thoughts on the designs and see a gallery of all the looks, just read more.

First, a few more thoughts on the episode:

  • Stella cannot do anything by herself. Ever. She can't make coffee. She can't get the fabric down from the shelves. For someone who seems so tough and flippant and "f--- you" in her general life, she sure is pretty helpless when it comes to practical things.
  • The specifics of Diane's challenge — design something for her collection inspired by the movie A Foreign Affair — led to a couple of funny spy interludes: Leanne sneaking around as "Secret Agent Leannimal" and Suede lamenting that he'd love to be a spy but his blue hair would give him away. Yeah, that and the fact that he can't stop talking about himself.
  • Speaking of which, I rolled my eyes to the heavens when Suede started talking in the third person again . . . and then hated myself for laughing really hard when he made that little hand heart for the camera. Sigh. I guess I am not immune to his few charms.
  • Stella had two of the best moments of the night just in her little chat with Tim Gunn, first getting confused about the inspiration for the challenge ("She's from Paris, right?" "Berlin." "Oh, whatever!") and then referring to "the stylist with the muumuu dress and the waistband" who didn't know what to make of Stella last week. "Sorry, Rachel Zoe!" Tim hollered.
  • Been too long since we've had eye candy. I'll take that long shot of Jerell in his patterned boxer-briefs.
  • Speaking of Jerell, that hat he put on his model looked suspiciously like a piece he's worn before on the runway.

Here are all the outfits, and below the pictures I'll talk about the best and worst:

  • Korto — Another week in the top and another good look from this designer, who's emerging as one of my biggest favorites. I loved the splashes of yellow on her dress, especially the one under the skirt, and Diane did too.
  • Kenley — Kenley's biggest issue was that she only made one piece — a dress, at that, and one that looked awfully similar to the one she wore on the runway. As Heidi said, she needed to make another piece to have it be a home run. Also: Kenley, honey, there's a difference between defending your look on the runway and just whining back to the judges. Learn that difference now before it hurts you.
  • Leanne — With Leanne, Korto, and Kenley in the top, don't you think we could be looking at our top three for the season right here? The color of Leanne's dress was gorgeous, the fabric flowed just right, she actually took Tim's feedback and used it to improve her jacket, and she managed to add enough details to keep it interesting. This made two wins in a row for her!
  • Joe — I'm back and forth with Joe. This week, his ginormous ego seemed to get the best of him as he defended his choices even in the face of evidence that showed they were bad ideas. The judges love harping on sloppy work, so the "It's uneven, but I don't care" attitude won't get you anywhere — especially when "it's uneven" could have applied to about eight different areas of his dress.
  • Suede — It's a tossup for me whether this or Blayne's polka-dot pantaloons should have been in the bottom, because I didn't think it was all that terrible. Yes, putting a slit in that dress was a bad idea because it made the fabric billow like pajama pants when his model walked. Yes, that herringbone vest made absolutely no sense whatsoever. But the dress was interesting — there were just enough little bad decisions along the way.
  • Stella — In the judges' words, her cape was "like Dracula" and the crotch of the pants was "every woman's nightmare." Stella seems to really not know how to work with fabric that's not "leatha"; her tailoring was so awful. Stella clearly wasn't going to make it to Bryant Park, so I'm glad her journey ended while she still had the energy for one impassioned kiss-off: "I'm a rock star. That's who I sell for. If you like it, come buy it. If you don't, keep walking. I don't care."

Do you agree with the result? Are you glad Stella has Ratbones to go home to? And for those of you who watched the previews, are you so excited to see whose dress is "pooing fabric" next week?

I liked Korto's, LeAnne's and Kenley's, however, I thought Kenley should have made more than one piece, and Korto's seemed too modern for the challenge. I thought LeAnne's jacket was kind of weird but the dress was beautiful.

Stella's and Joe's were both TERRIBLE, they should have both gone home. At least Stella has a better personality than Joe, though neither of them are quality enough for the show.

Jerell's stuff is too busy. he needs to learn to edit asap.

I didn't sense a real rift between korto/teri or leanne/kenley as you mention. In fact it seemed like at one point korto and teri were sneaking off together. I think they are both a little snobby (as is Joe).

Can't wait til Christian comes back next week!!

Michael Kors gets the quote of the week with me for "That crotch is every woman's nightmare." It was almost as good as his quote last season: "The crotch on those pants is INSANE."

Leanne deserved to win. Kenley's dress was boring and generic. I liked Korto's outfit alot.

This episode was good. I knew Stella was going home 5 mins into the show. But she lasted for a pretty long time, seeing how the competition started off for her.

Again, where was Meena, I mean Nina? Though from the previews she'll be back next week.

Glad Leanne won again! Her dress was gorgeous and like she said she won even with immunity.

Korto's was also very pretty. She is one of my favorites and Leanne is quickly emerging as another one.

I think that Mr. Tanning (Blayne) will be out next week. He's been getting by these past couple of weeks, but I think his time is coming to an end...

Oh and Stella making fun of Rachel Zoe was HILARIOUS!!!

DVF is the best! Leanne's dress was great and looked like it fit the rest of the collection. Korto's dress looked a bit too much like the dress in the AMEX ads which is already in DVF's fall collection (http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/2008/02/judging-judges-diane-von-furst...).

I was upset that Joe didn't go home. His outfit was such a cheap hooker look and did not look like DVF at all, whatsoever. Plus, Stella is a lot more fun to watch.

I think Leanne and Korto are for sure in the top 3. The 3rd pick is probably Kenley but I hope not, because she is getting really obnoxious. She needs to learn some basic manners!

My guess for the rest of the season-
    Top 3: Korto, Leanne, Kenley
    Top 5: Jerell, Terri
    Out soon: Suede, Blayne, Joe

I thought last night's episode was really good and it was nice to see them do a "serious" challenge. My thoughts:

    - I really really like Leanne and her outfit was amazing. I'm pulling for her to win the whole competition. I also thought Korto's dress was pretty.

    - Did you see how pissed Terri was that she wasn't in the top 3 again? I liked her at first but now she seems like a whining biotch.

    - Suede talked in the third person 10000x last night. Suede or Blayne need to be kicked off next.

    - Does Kenley have problems? She kept crying the whole night and was acting rude to Heidi. Not cool.

    - Ding dong, the witch is dead. I'm so happy that Stella went home!

Korto and Leanne are my top 2 picks. I'm still on the fence about the third person. It would probably be between Suede, Terri, and Jerell.

I actually like Jerell's quirky combination of fabrics and patterns.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Kenley's design aesthetic is too narrow. And Blayne and Joe are totally the next to go. I've been sick of Blayne since episode 1.

Leanne is the best of them. I was very frustrated that at first she was being criticized for over designing. Clearly if you read her bio she idolizes Rodarte, Maison Martin Margiela, Balenciaga, just to name a few who do over design and for the most are different designers than say like Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, and Michael Kors. Her designs are Runway Ready. She has what it takes. I like Korto style but it's too D&G for me.

I love Korto and I like Leanne. I have loved everything Korto has designed and have loved a few of Leanne's. (I haven't disliked any of hers, I just haven't loved them all.)

I don't really care who the third designer is in the finals, but if I had to pick someone for it to be, I would pick Jerrell or Terri. I liked Terri at first, but she is starting to be a one-trick pony. I feel like Jerrell has a good aesthetic, he's just not quite there.

Kenley is quite possibly the most annoying person on tv right now. And that includes the Hills girls.

Koto is my fave and I want her to win. I am not a fan of Leanne but her clothes have been stunning so far. I liked the challenge and Kenley got on my nerves last night. I officially dislike her. Her dress was cute but nothing impressive. I liked Stella's look. I think eventually she would have gone home but Suede's look was awful from head to toe. He should have gone. I have not been at all happy with the way Project Runway is getting rid of designers this season. I am so annoyed that Blyane is there and last night Suede should have gone.

Stella going home this week means that I am one week closer to buying a Zotis and Bones piece in stores, and that's the only reason I'm okay with her leaving. I was really starting to like Stella, and, let's face it, even though she can't tailor worth a damn, Joe's outfit was FAR FAR worse this week.

I seriously don't know why Joe is still around, he's so lame. His designs have really eked by. He keeps talking about how terrible everyone's design aesthetic is, but his is the MOST generic of all of them. I can't even believe he won that drag queen challenge, it was really a hot pink mess. AND the reason why the judges loved it (the sailor idea), it wasn't even his idea!! He was going to do that awful Elvis-like collar. Ugh, he needs to go home...plus I sense he's a bit of a homo-phobe. I hope he's next

I was glad Joe was spared. He's been better over all than Stella has been, and it was her time to go. I'm surprised Blayne and Suede are still there though. They need to go.
Terri is very "same thing every time" as was pointed out on the show.

I actually like Joe, I hope he will be in the final 5, but realistically I don't think he will make it in the final 3. (I'd be happy if he did though...that would mean he'd pull off a few more really great designs)

I liked Kenley and I felt for her. It's on off for me with liking her, generally I like her, but there's episodes like where she was just being stupid with Daniel, that have sort of dented that. I get what her style could be though, and that is what I really like her for.

Korto will be in the final 3, I think so far she has the best shot of winning. I'm a little tired of all her kimono/big fitting designs. It's getting old, especially because I don't really care for that style, but they are well executed and I can see the appeal.

I loveeed Leanne's. It was awesome to see her win two challenges in a row. I liked Korto's too but Leanne all the way!

And yes, Kenley is getting annoying. As well as Terri.

I loved Leeanne's dress it was sooo gorgeous. I love Korto but something about that dress last night was a little off. It looked a little sloppy foro ne of her designs. I actually thought that they had given away the ending when I saw the AMEX commercial. I figured maybe they did a bit of editing on the desing but I was wrong and I 'm glad because leeanne so deserved the win. I actually liked Blaynes outfit for once. I was so shocked at the wonderful construction of his jacket that I wondered if he had one of the other designers make it for him. Maybe all it takes for him to be a good designer is a few weeks out of the tanning bed. I'm over Terri and Joe BORING and if Suede refers to himself in the third person again I'm gonna puke.

i commend stella for staying true to herself, but at the smae time you have to give a little to gain a lot. if she could've done something outside of her comfort zone maybe she could've stayed. joe's outfit wasn't good at all.

leanne was definitely my favorite because she actually learned from the critique and that is how someone can win a competition or even improve themselves as a person.

i LOVE kenley, but yes she is getting a little annoying.
i want blayne to be gone becuz he uses '-licious' a little too much and he's too stuck on himself to that he's not all he is cracked up to be.

korto is def. a fav because i like her design and how she can always 'make it work' when she wants to express her artistic side. terri is a little too overconfident at times but i do like her designs.

    suede is weird. lol.

    i can't wait until next week =]

I really liked Stella! I was sad to see her go and the way everyone cried was really sweet. I know some people sometimes cry, but it seemed like everyone was. Joe and Blayne are next. And Suede and Jerrell think they are much more talented than they are

I have been saying since the beginning, Leanne wins it. Korto second, and Kenley third.

I was starting to warm up to Stella...but honestly, she wasn't going to win the show. I'm ready for Blayne to go...I don't care if he's the hometown boy. He needs to get off the show and go do something else...like tan.

I really liked Leanne's dress and more and more she's becoming the designer that I want to design my clothes for me, but she's not quite there yet. Overall, I still haven't been completely swept off my feet by any of them, but Leanne's coming close.

Kenley has some great designs...but she needs to be quiet at times. Does anyone notice that any one she becomes friends with, gets booted off? Wes, Daniel, Stella?
