Well, the two-hour series premiere of the new (and improved? could that even be possible?) 90210 finally aired last night. While it sure was long — I think maybe the two-hour premiere "event" was a miscalculation, cause I was getting a little tired by the end — I was actually totally fine with it and would say that it exceeded my expectations. Granted, my expectations were low. But still: exceeded!
First of all, it was surprisingly true to its source material's tone — especially on the wholesomeness front. You might be saying, "But Buzz, there was oral sex and drugs in the first episode!" which is true . . . but I found nothing in last night's premiere shocking, did you? It certainly didn't push into crazy new territory for a teen show. And unlike the Gossip Girl universe, the kids that exist in this elite world will experience consequences and get grounded and stuff (or, you know, lose their texting privileges and coffee money)! It almost got a little after-school special-y at times; maybe it will be a better fit with the sweet Privileged than I initially thought!
You can check out our live chat about the show last night, and I've added a few more thoughts on all the new characters and plot twists if you read more.
- Grandma Tabitha is awesome. No surprise that Jessica Walter (aka Lucille Bluth) is one of the best parts of the show, but seriously, I want a grandma like that! She gets such good lines.
- What's your verdict on the overall acting? I thought Shenae Grimes had a huge load to carry as Annie and pulled off her role well, impressing me more than she ever did as Darcy on Degrassi. The actress who played Silver was great at snark, but bad at emotion; Naomi's face terrifies me, so job well done, I think; and the verdict is still out on Dustin Milligan as Ethan Ward. He's definitely the weak link.
- Also, it's really hard not to think Wire thoughts when Tristan Wilds is on the screen! Like, "What, Dixon, you gonna let some lacrosse boys push you around? Call Chris and Snoop! They'll give them the what-for!"

- I know they had to get us hooked but there was a lot going on. I mean, Dixon alone was booted on and off the freaking lacrosse team like nine times in two hours. Hopefully that storyline is retired now.
- Brenda's back! Kelly's got a kid! Nat was . . . there, and apparently bad at making coffee. So did you like having those older characters hovering around? Did it distract from the fun or add to it for you?
- Did anyone else notice the name of the anchor-girl on Navid's news show? Zuckerman!
- Speaking of Navid, he was a surprising highlight for me. That whole daddy-is-a-porn-producer story is great.
- And finally: While I could have done with a few more Freaks and Geeks moments, they were definitely there: Annie's musical flashback, 90 percent of what came out of Tabitha's mouth, etc. Was it enough awkwardness for you?
What else did you catch? Are you hooked? Will you keep watching?

OK, i´d liked to have Kelly, Brenda and Nat back. But the two eps were very for-looking and bad. The clothes were to much over the top. The storyline was a bad copy of the old and the actors are a bad cast. How could anybody think that the actress who played Naomi is really 16? And besides the teens acted like child's but talked all the time about sex?!?!
1The only reason why i should watch this show are the old cast-members. But the teens are to much over the top and not really my thing.
I tried to watch but it could not hold my attention for some reason. My guess is b/c my mind was preoccupied with other things, it was just boring, or b/c I grew up on the original 90210 and think it was a bad remake.
2Boring! I watched for about 15 min and couldn't get past the bad acting! This will be short lived for sure.
3I liked it. watched the whole thing, and had a great time. i'm eager to see more!
4horrible acting but i'm gonna give it another shot. And i agree with you buzz, there was nothing shocking ... nothing unique about the story line ... and boy oh boy did they switch friends like 10,000 times in one ep ... i liked Silver that was about it. And the guys were so not hot enough to be leads that I'll like ... until next week!
5I thought it was great. I was very happy that they didn't take it to the extreme like Gossip Girl! I stopped watching GG because it was way over the top (I'm sure teenagers live like that, but not in my small neck of the woods). It reminded me more of the OC than GG, the family that loves each other with kids that are pretty good.
6I thought the acting was pretty good.
Oh yeah, I never watched the old 90210 so maybe that's why it was good to me.
7Also the worst part of the show was Shannon D, who plays Brenda? Talk about not being able to act!!!
Terrible... it provided excellent mocking fodder for my friends and I but overall this thing will no appear on my viewing schedule again... just awful.
8Loved it! It was just as ridiculous as the original and really, if you were expecting greatness, then you didn't watch the original.
9I'm not a huge fan of it... Unfortunately when they re-make shows, it's never the same for me...
When something becomes such a huge success on it's own, it's difficult to bring it back with a newer, fresher spin. I watch re-runs of Bev Hills for the nostalgia. And when someone tries to re-create what I've already become accustomed to, I'm not excited about it.
Remember when Saved by the Bell was such a big hit and we embraced the cheesiness of it? We loved that Zack and Kelly were always off and on and Screech was such a rampant geek? It's the same way I feel about Brenda and Dylan and a young David Silver.
When the kids from SBTB got older, they created Saved by the Bell: The new class. It still had Mr. Belding and Screech but it just wasn't the same and the show eventually fizzled. However, when they brought back most of the original gang for Saved by the Bell: The College Years...it was a success and even spawned a movie.
This is exactly how I feel about 90210. It leaves me wanting more of the same characters and drama. Hopefully Dylan will return and be Kelly's baby daddy and Brenda can get insanely pissed and re-create some of the original love-triangleness that they once had. Maybe Brandon will return and mentor young Zuckermann while fighting Dylan for Kelly. Maybe Donna will return and be....well, Donna. Otherwise...this show will fizzle also.
Just my 2 cents and honest opinion
10My favorite quip from the show was when Lori Loughlin said "how bout i drive you home and we can swap stories about his penis"
Snap! One point for Aunt Becky.
11It was ok, made me long for the orginal. I like the characters eventhough the lead character Annie needs to eat that girl was skin and bones. We'll see how it goes and I actually think it's a little more realistic then Gossip Girl.
12More of the originals, please! I know that won't happen since it is geared towards teenagers. I really disliked Shenae on Degrassi but she isn't quite as bad as Annie.
13It definitely was a phenomenon back in the day... that old cast had charisma... hopefully this will come together.
14it was TERRIBLE... and i liked it for it! cringe-inducing acting, dialogue, clothing, you name it.
but i do like the coach - he's cute!
contrary to buzz's review, i have to say i like ethan more than naomi. that girl is creeeeeeepy.
oooo, and love that kelly taylor's little sis is there.
15I kicked back with a bottle Pinot Grigio and loved every minute of the show! Definitely adding it to my TV schedule this fall
16I thought the acting was terrible which provided me with millions of laugh out loud moments. When Annie got the chance to audition - how awkward was she? I felt uncomfortable watching. Naomi seriously disappointed - she definitely excels ad playing a seductive b*#$h on Nip/Tuck but totally failed here. I can't believe they are supposed to be 16 - they look like the same age as their english teacher.
17Also - the Peach Pit turns into a lounge with a bar at night?! The difference between GG and this is that GG knows it's over the top and that's what's great about it. With 90210 - it doesn't go far enough in either direction - outlandish or realistic.
i'm not that excited about the new 90210 class -but i like watching it because there is references to the old class... like seeing kelly taylor and brenda walsh.. and seeing kelly's lil sister all grown up and in high school.. and i did notice next week - we even get kelly's mom back - and it's the same lady from the old 90210... just for that i'll keep watching... who knows if i'll get hooked by the time brenda's gone.
18So far I liked it, did it have some flaws...yes, but overall I was pleasantly suprised. For now, it's an add to my fall tv shedule...and dvr!
19I can't remember the characters which seemed corny to me, but overall I loved it and I can't wait for me. I agree that it was crazy to see Michael, er Tristan Wilds, nka Dixon being such a punk I can't wait to see him evolve. The actress playing his sister is pretty good. I was impressed with her skills. That's all I remember.
20I stopped watching the original 90210 around the time Donna's hair turned red and she started having sex with David? Anyways...I am hooked! The acting could have been better, but with time I can only hope they will become more in sync with each other. i agree on Naomi's face. She freaked me out on Nip/Tuck! As far as the after-school special and wholesomeness...two pints: 1) The original 90210 often had a moralistic bent the first couple of seasons and 2) This is the CW, the former homw of 7th Heaven which was on forever! Speaking of 7th Heaven (which I stopped watching when Mary left) I would love to see Ruthie on here. I'm sure she has turned into an even lovelier young woman since we last saw her. My favorite part of the show included Kelly's interaction with Silver. I was so excited to see her original Mom will be in the show as well! The kid, threw me, because reports say he's Dylan's son...didn't she marry Brandon in the original? Can someone clear that up for me?
Finally, the main reason I am going to watch the show is for the great one-liners from grandma. She was the highlight of the evening. I'd also like to see if they dare to have a racially charged story arc...it is Beverly hills, so I will keep my fingers crossed!
21One other thing...who else thinks Naomi and the coach are going to have a fling???????
22I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I'll give it another shot next week. The parts w/ the old cast members and the other adults grabbed my attention the most, the teens not so much. I think I'll figure it out by next week if this is something I'll continue to watch or not.
23I only watched a bout 10 or 15 minutes of it and I was trying to like it but no luck. For me it was as if someone mashed together some Degrassi and South of Nowhere episodes and called it 90210. I like my teen dramas and while there were a couple of sweet moments in the little I watched( i.e. Grandma Tabitha and the penis comment from Aunt Becky) I loved seeing Jennie Garth I just love her in general but I didn't get to see Brenda so oh well. I wasn't all that into 90210 when it originally aired but I am aware of it's significance so I can see why they want to re make it, but I prefer the replays of the old version on soap net to what I saw last night.
24On a side note the previews for the new season of Degrassi look so awesome. Also seems liek they might be getting back to something more like the orgignal Degrassi High with regular less shiny kids who feel like kids you actually knew isnted fo the ones you wished you were.
The show was okaay. Bad acting, funny one-liners, and a whole lot of awkwardness. Most of the reason i'll be sticking around is for the coach, navid!!, and shanae grims cause i love her from degrassi!
25dustin milligan is super cute and overall the cast is really attractive. i'm gonna keep watching for the fun of it but i know i won't get too attached.
Well I have never watched the original 90210 but I loved it! cant wait for it to come on next week! =)
26I agree that it was only okay. There were some attractive actors (the lax coach!), but it was pretty boring and same-old in terms of storylines but not acted particularly well. I was not impressed. It was more realistic than Gossip Girl but at least the people on that show can act and are interesting.
27I found myself slightly distracted by how skinny Annie and Silver were, ummm not so healthy looking and it made me kind of sad.
I think that I was so excited and had high expectations so the let down was that much worse, not to mention that the old 90210 show was much better.
Prognosis: disappointing (but I'll probably give it another chance b/c other new shows don't premiere for awhile)
Okay, so my favorite was absolutely Silver.
Her line "You CAN call me Erin, but I won't answer." Cracked me up.
Agreed on Lori Loughlin's "Penis" line. I almost spit coke out my nose. Naomi's Mom BUGS me! I mean how RUDE to come into someone ELSES house and hit on their husband IN FRONT OF THEM. And don't tell me she wasn't, she TOTALLY was.
I haven't made up my mind on Dixon. He just doesn't seem to fit, but he may grow on me. I liked what they had his character do though to prove himself. I thought that was pretty true to form. Maybe not to that extent, but I'm sure a new guy on an established team would have to do something extreme to be accepted. In High School, that's just a fact of life. Few are accepted at face value and even FEWER when sports are involved.
Were they too thin? I thought so, but I also thought it played well into the story.
Being it is Beverly Hills, it's believable because that is such an image conscious city. Annie could have been "thicker" coming from Kansas, but for the rest of them, that gaunt look is probably what they've been raised to believe is perfect. I mean, can you imagine Naomi's Mom if Naomi was overweight? She'd have a conniption fit! Then the one on drugs, that makes sense BECAUSE she's a druggie. Silver, well, remember Kelly's weight issues? AND if you recall when Erin was little she was already watching her calories at 4 years old and Jackie thought it was no big deal. So that makes sense too.
I loved Annie & Dixon's parents, and found myself hoping that they do in fact live up to Jim and Cindy Walsh. A couple that struggles, has their ups and downs, but manages to keep it together. I think every show needs one solid family unit.
Grandma was a KICK! She definitely got the best one-liners, but I foresee BIG problems between her and her Daughter in law. LOL
LOVED having the old characters. Brenda looks a bit used up at this point, I mean, WHERE did the gap come from? I don't remember that damn thing! LOL Kelly, well, she's Kelly. She was always my favorite. She had so many layers and what you saw with her was NOT what you go, she was so much more. And a biotch to boot. LOVED her! She didn't disappoint last night. I'm glad she and Brenda are friends again, they always said they were meant to be friends, and here we are.
I hope that because Hannah is there we will EVENTUALLY see Andrea or Jesse. I'm betting that after Andrea and Jesse divorced, Andrea came back to Beverly Hills to practice. I'll bet that a story line will be something about how Hannah belongs there (zip code) and Andrea never "really" did because of where she lived. Could be wrong, but maybe.
What I'd really like to see is a retrospective at some point from Brenda and Kelly. One evening they are sitting talking about old times and say "I wonder where everyone is?" and Kelly or Brenda will start reminiscing and we'll get to learn how everyone is doing. I mean I can't believe that Brenda and Kelly will NEVER discuss Donna. It would naturally come up you'd think as close as those 3 were, and then the 2 (Kelly and Donna) after Brenda left. They were like sisters almost. I just want at some point answers as to where everyone's lives led them.
I agree that the writing was a bit thin, but remember this was a pilot. It was the "introduction of characters" so it would be hard to fit heavy story-lines in along with Character introduction.
I wanted more when it was over, which is a sign to me that I know where I'll be next Tuesday night. Although, I'll be the first to admit I'm not hard to please when it comes to TV. I mean hell, I like reality TV. LMAO
28Loved Grandma. Everyone else put me to sleep. Gawker nailed it when they said the show was disappointing.
29i wasn't expecting much because i'm so glued to gossip girl that everything else seems mediocre. which it was, but i knew it would be better than degrassi, which it also was. it was alright, some stuff i liked, some stuff i didn't. i never watched the old stuff because i was super young at the time, so a lot of it confused me. i didn't know if the teenagers were in the old series and continuing on from there (annie and ethan's summer fling, annie's adopted brother) or if they just made that up in the plot.
i'll be watching it more though, because i think it'll get better. the cast isn't very attractive (except for annie and her dad, i love annie as darcy in degrassi), but eh.
30many are saying the acting was bas, and i have to agree, BUT i think its because they all have to find themselves in the characters and get settled. i just popped in the first season of Gilmore Girls (am i the only one who STILL wants it to come back??) and i realized that the acting in the first 3-4 episodes is BAD. they arent sure about the characters but slowly get into it and then BOOM its like they were actually the characters.
give the kids time, theyll get better.
but other than that.. HIGHLY entertaining. not GREAT but definetly entertaining.
31To paraphrase what I wrote on the live chat:
"Too many storylines, stereotypical characters, and there was no one I could relate to. I liked seeing Brenda and Kelly again, but their storyline seemed uneven with the rest of the show. I liked the hot teacher, Mr. Matthews, though! "
I also have to add:
If another actress was cast in Silver's part, I think that she would be my favorite character, but this actress tries TOO hard to be the edgy and cool loner. Her outfits distract me because they are just screaming "Look at how alternative and different I am!" when she is really just wearing Nicole Richie's hand-me-downs. Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) looks about 25, not 15 or 16, but I think she is good at playing a b*tch. Ethan is boring as hell and Annie doesn't seem really seem to have the charisma to be the main character. She looked ridiculous when she was dancing for Spring Awakening (even though I know the dancing is supposed to be a little odd. So far, I like Navid and Dixon the best, even though Tristan Wils and Shenae Grimes don't seem like they have brother-sister chemistry. It was cool seeing Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez (Andrea's daughter), even if it was only for a brief second, but I liked the joke about her looking 30 in reference to Gabrielle Carteris being almost 30 when she played Andrea. I wish the teacher hadn't made that comment though because it made him seem really rude. I don't really have much else to say, but I hope the next few episodes are better. This two-hour premiere was WAY too long.
32So I was very sceptical about this show. I never watched the old 90210 so I didn't think I'd like this but.....I loved it!!!! I loved most of the characters, I already have a major crush on Ryan....I love this kind of show, it's like a cross between Gossip Girl & The OC, obviously not as good as them but good enough!!!!! The Grandma is amazing, so funny!!! I'm looking forward to next week
33Wilds*
34I liked it alot. I didnt think I'd be a fan of Shenae Grimes because I cant stand her character Darcy on Degrassi, but I was pleasantly suprised. People keep talking about how bad the acting was....but cmon...TORI SPELLING??? (from the original, obviously) shes about as bad as it gets. The actress who plays Naomi also plays (played??) Eden on last seasons Nip/Tuck, I thought she was so perfectly cast as Eden it's hard for me to see her as anything else. The show is just like every other teen drama, but thats the fun of it. It kind of reminded me of the show South of Nowhere (aired on The-N) without the major theme being questioning ones sexuality (yet).
35I actually didn't mind it nearly as much as I thought it would...of course, it's super-juvenile and nowhere near as great as the original, but it wasn't too bad. I like the girl who plays Annie. And I love Silver.
36I definitely think that Gossip Girl is way better than this show, but I thought it was alright, but it made me want to watch the original 90210(which today, I did). And I don't mean to be a stickler, but they do get punished in Gossip Girl too Ex: Jenny being grounded because she stole that dress, Serena's mom was threatening to send her to reform school when she thought she was slipping into old habits, and Georgina was going to be sent to Penance ( a reform school) by her parents in the season finale.
37SoCal — that's a good point. I think it's just that even the punishments seem much more high-class on Gossip Girl! (With the exception of the Humphreys, who are pretty grounded still.)
38GG and 90210 are totally different. One is new money *90210* and one is old money. VERY different!
39terrible and boring!
40California, you didn't like Silver's clothes? I saw it just the opposite. Yes, I thought they were over the top, but she IS Jackie's Daughter/Kelly's sister, don't you remember the outfits Kelly wore? I mean lord, remember the knee length skirt with the polka dot spandex? OMG. I think Erin is just a victim of her Mother's fashion sense like Kelly Was. LMAO
41come on, original 90210 had so much drug drama... people even died from OD! Kelly, Steve, Dylan - pretty much everybody had drug problem.
42I loved it!
43I prefer the original 90210 and I don't agree that this one is better, at least not right now! I hope they bring more of the original cast on because it's kind of hard getting on a 16 year olds level when you're in your 30's but it was aight~ I wonder if it will run for 10 years
44Mykie - It's not that I thought that Silver's clothes were over-the-top, it just seemed like she was trying to hard to be edgy yet she is dressing in all of the famous trends. She looks like she is wearing hand-me-downs from Nicole Richie. If you are truly the cool outsider type then you wouldn't have to try hard to look cool. I don't know, it just bugs me...
45I am way behind, but did anyone else (if anyone is still here) think it was completely unrealistic that two middle-schoolers would have tattoos? (I mean, I get that they're in high school now, but wasn't the story that they were best friends in middle school and that's why they had matching tattoos?)
46lilkimbo - Yeah, I thought that was really unrealistic too. Who would let an 8th grader get a tattoo?
