The New York Times recently ran a story comparing the portrayals of teenage life in Gossip Girl, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and the British show Skins. As I read through the reporter's description of each show, I wondered which teens, if any, see themselves represented in these three seriously different shows. Though they're fun to watch, none of these three shows quite captures my own teen years.

For example, the Times describes Secret Life as "steeped in moralizing" (my teen years weren't as pious), Gossip Girl as a place "where jetting to Aspen from Teterboro" is normal (yeah, not my experience either), and Skins as "nihilistic in its mood" (my hormones were raging, but I wouldn't say I was a nihilist).
So what teen drama did come closest to my own youth? Strange to admit it, but Saved by the Bell comes pretty close (sometimes I related to Jessie Spano. There, I said it. Except during this scene). Or maybe My So-Called Life (because of this scene, I did my fair share of bed dancing) — but even that still isn't quite right. What about you? What teen show — past or present — best sums up your own teenage years?

Def. My So-Called Life. I love it!
1I know its not a 'teen show' but I think the Cosby show is the only thing that comes close. Not so much the doctor-lawyer parents but the general activities and experiences of the kids.
If I had to pick a teen show mayde degrassi the next generation if you dial it back a 1000.
2Absolutely MSCL.
3freaks and geeks was pretty on point
4I would definitely say that MSCL was the most on point. Saved by the Bell was much closer too since there were pranks, actual studying and not all the sex
.
5For me...a bit 90210, a bit Saved By The Bell
6A little bit of Freaks and Geeks, a little bit of Dawson's Creek (there were a lot of drama queens amongst my friends).
7Skins is actually pretty close. I'd say a mash-up between Skins and My So Called Life. But with less sex and more drugs....Thank god my teen years are OVER!
8Well... SBTB is probably close to me. I was like Jesse too! haha
9I don't relate to any of the three shows that are listed, because they all seem pretty promiscuous and I definitely wasn't that way in high school. And I'm still not. I don't relate to a particular "teen show," but I relate to certain characters like Haley James Scott on "One Tree Hill" and Rory Gilmore on "Gilmore Girls." Like both of them, I am pretty smart, have a somewhat quiet personality, good values, likes to read, etc. Except that unlike Haley, I can't sing very well and I wasn't married with a kid by the end of high school, and I'm not quite as shy or overachieving as Rory (plus I don't have a mom who had me when she was 16).
1075% gossip girl
11hmm thats tough.
i identified with most of the characters on Skins, so i guess that one is the most accurate.
12They haven't made a show featuring mostly characters who have that overachieving streak my friends and I had (have). There's always the one - usually a girl - who is focused on getting somewhere rather than sleeping with people or making drama.
Alexandra Robbins' "Overachievers" could have been written about my school. As it was, only my state.
Freaks and Geeks comes the closest, I think, to the total experience for me, maybe maybe Rory Gilmore as a character but without her flakiness about boys.
13There really isn't one for me. And if there is, I wouldn't know it, because I refuse to watch teen dramas. No way I want to dwell on any of that stuff!
I'd rather watch Desperate Housewives or, hate to admit it, Lipstick Jungle any day. XD
14my so called life.
15A bit of Felicity, a touch of 90210... also a pinch of Dawson and finally the edge of Popular.
16Hmmm this is hard. Gilmore Girls would probably be the closest since I grew up in a Stars Hollow-ish town, went to a private high school, and can relate to Rory. People always say I remind them of Rory too. I think it's mostly because I'm studious and shy, but we also have similar style, personalities, and little mannerisms I guess. Oh and I am qualified to join the DAR lol. The whole mother-daughter thing that the show is based around doesn't fit though as I have two parents and a sibling. Most of the other teen dramas I've watched I can't relate to much. I always find a few characters and situations that are similar to me, but overall they're so full of crazy drama and scandal that I did not experience at all. For example, on Gossip Girl I could relate completely when Serena felt that she couldn't be good enough for Dan because he holds her on a pedestal and if she messes up he'll be so disappointed. I've had that same feeling with a guy. But overall I can't relate to her because I'm not a millionaire, haven't done drugs, didn't run away to boarding school, didn't break into the school's pool and have a party, my friends haven't slipped me roofies (I hope!), etc etc.
17Daria. Oh my god. Daria.
18There has yet to be a show that resemblance or captures my life growing up.
19I don't think I had a typical high school experience. My high school was just one building with five floors and we didn't even have a field...just a gym! There was no such thing as cliques and the only rivalry was between the different grade levels at pep rallies. At least I had a great group of friends I hung out with all four years
20it's funny - i can't say for sure that i really related well with any of the shows that i watched - they were more for my escape from reality that i enjoyed them and found things that i could see myself doing in random times. i loved felicity - although they started in college for us - but i think that they were closest to reality - being teens in NYC colleges, working, trying to go to classes and make things work, and still fall in love and maintain their relationships
21Laguna Beach--relationships wise.
22I'd say 90210
23Dawson's Creek, definitely!
24A show called flash forward on the disney channel - Jewell Staite and Ben Foster were the leads.
25Skins, definitely. There's at least one aspect in all of the characters that I can directly relate too
26Oh man, Daria...goooooood point.
27Gossip Girl almost completely.
28i'm in high school right now, and i cant say any of these shows really portray my school. We don't really have cliques and no jocks or cheerleaders either. lol, it might be fun though, my school is pretty boring
29I'd have to say 90210 mixed with the movie Thirteen. I have no idea how I'm still alive, but just wait until my memoir comes out!
30Hmm, I'm leaning towards saying Dawson's Creek, even though my friends and I didn't go around philosophizing/questioning everything quite to the extent the show did, ha ha. But it's definitely the closest to my experience that I can think of (especially with the exchange of hookups and relationships within one circle).
31I would have to say Felicity, Dawson's Creek, and Gilmore Girls.
32My So-Called Life, hands down.
33Freaks and Geeks.
34guess i'd have to go with Freaks and Geeks
35none i guess. maybe some veronica mars...
