You know, I was already really excited about the news that Jason Segel was working on a new Muppet movie. But could he also be plotting a new version of The Muppet Show? According to a report from the UK, the answer is yes. Segel's movie script apparently "involves all the Muppets uniting to save their studio with one last variety show," and it leaves open the possibility of continuing in TV form — presumably if the movie does well.
Maybe it's just because I recently watched a few vintage Muppet Show episodes (with guests Peter Sellers and John Cleese!), but I think a modern-day Muppet Show could be fantastic — if it could recapture the spirit of the original. (That's where I think the 1996 ABC/Disney update, Muppets Tonight, fell short.) What do you think?

I vote yes...as long as they remain the ever endearing "real life" muppets and not some CGI disaster. Kids need a little snark these days!!!
1i wouldn't as i am not a kid anymore, so not interested. but i remember they didn't get my interested when i was a kid though... just miss piggy
))
2Allytta — you know, I'm not surprised you didn't get into them as a kid. When I just rewatched the old episodes, I was totally *shocked* at how much more they were for adults than for kids! I guess they were theoretically kids' shows because of the Muppets, but I don't think much of the comedy was kid-focused at all. I was really surprised!
3I loved it when I was a kid...but didn't they already try to make the "new muppet show" for a while? or is that my bad memory?
4I love the Muppets! A new Muppet TV show would be awesome...
5i think that i would be SO EXCITED about a new muppet show. the timing is great too since i would love to have kids soon and this would be something that we could both enjoy - i wouldn't feel like a weirdo watching it on my own...and i would have a relevant audience there
6I love Jason Segel, so I'm okay with it. I don't want them to make a whole new series or something, but if it's just a movie then it's cool.
7I loved the show when I was a kid, but the revamped version a few years ago wasn't nearly as good. I hope that the new movie doesn't involve Clifford, the dread-locked manager (or whoever he was). Just keep the original cast (and don't forget the fabulous Pepe the King Prawn!) and the spirit of the original show. I do wonder, though, if kids today will appreciate a show like this. Maybe the Jonas Bros can be guest stars?
8Muppet babies!!!
9I don't know how I feel about this. I am a huge Muppets fan (in the process of re-watching the Muppet Show) and I feel without Jim Henson that this show will never have the same magic as it once did.
I don't think one can recapture the greatness that was the Muppet Show.
10I loved the Muppet Show! However, remakes are seldom as good as the original, and who can recapture Jim Henson's magic and talent?
11I don't know if today's kids would be as interested as we were when we were kids... ):
12I *heart* the muppets
13I grew up on the muppet show, and in todays world they wouldnt be the same, it would just be a showcase for untalented hacks and since the original creators arent here, they shouldnt bastardize the show.
14FYI, the International Gallery in DC is hosting a Jim Henson exhibit until Oct. 5 ... just went to it this week and it is really cool to see how he started out - making commercials for coffee, etc, using muppet-like characters. I recommend it to anyone who lives in the area or will be visiting.
And I think I would catch the new show... I was surprised how much I loved the video clips which were part of the exhibit. They really made me nostalgic for my childhood!
15"I don't know if today's kids would be as interested as we were when we were kids... ):"
There were so many kids at this exhibit and they were lovvving it. I think the muppets, and Sesame Street, other Jim Henson creations, etc really resonate across generations.
16I know exactly what you mean Buzz. I loved the Muppets as a child and after rewatching a few episodes recently I realized that there was a lot of adult humor in it as well. I guess that explains why my parents where glued to the tv just as much as I was when The Muppet's were on!
17Very nice site!
