So there's a new estimate for how many people watched the opening ceremony for the Olympics last Friday — and it's double the original estimate, which was already mindblowing. Today, Nielsen said the total audience for the opening ceremony was actually 2 billion, a third of the world's population!
That's not all: Even the regular broadcasts have been drawing more than 30 million viewers a night for NBC (for reference, that's about even with this year's Oscars). And even though much of the women's gymnastics team final aired after 11 p.m. in most time zones on Tuesday, it's still estimated that almost 45 million people tuned in for the event, one of the highest-rated portions of the games so far.
But even here at Sugar HQ, there are some folks who aren't getting sucked into the Olympic hype. The problem is, there's just not all that much else to watch right now. Sure, Fox is repeating all of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Big Brother is on schedule, and most of the cable series are soldiering on as normal. But the rest of the schedule looks like a jumbled mess — an Eli Stone here, a Private Practice there, a couple of CSIs to round it out. So, if you're not watching the Olympics, what are you watching? Are you content with repeats? Have you turned to DVDs? Or is this a perfect excuse to turn off the TV altogether?

I have cable. There is always something new to watch (like Project Runway and Eureka!). Although my mom did DVR the opening ceremonies.
1Netflix, baby!
2Nick at Night. Home Improvement comes on at 9!!!! Until then I am just not watching tv. Or, i have it on ABC family to catch reruns or movies that are on.
3Nothing! I don't watch a lot of tv but when I do the only thing I've been flipping between is different channels covering the Olympics!
4I've been all about the Netflix and Buffy DVDs.
5DVDs DVDs DVDs. And ProRun. I'm just not thati nto the olympics.
6i've been watching every jon and kate plus 8 rerun I can catch! I watched the olympics the other night (while drinking lol) at my friend's apt though.
7Cable, repeats of shows I missed during the regular season and Netflix! I'm boycotting these Olympics for various reasons.
8Anything except the Olympics. I don't know why but i hate watching them, i just can't get into it.
9If we aren't watching the Olympics, then my hubby and I are watching old X-Files on DVD.
10Burn Notice, Futurama on Comedy Central, lots of SpongeBob, and the Bio Channel.
11Nothing at all. I'm enjoying the summer and going out with friends.
1245 million people watched Alicia Sacramone fall off the beam. ...And it even started late to begin with, at least on the east coast.
Cable is my alternative to the games. I've certainly had enough of the swimming.
13interestingly enough, i didn't think that i'd watch ANY of the olympics cause they aren't really my thing, yet i find that i've watched hours every night - so it's weird.
14I watch the Today Show when I'm getting ready for work in the mornings, and that's plenty enough Olympics brou-ha-ha for me each day.
So in the evenings, I turn to Tivo! I've recorded some movies from Starz during the day, and I recorded all of Damages season 1 when FX re-aired it last weekend. Plenty to keep me occupied until the weekend!
15I only watch the swimming, diving, women's volleyball and gymnastics. Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Aaron Pearsol are nightly eye candy
.
However if I do get bored with the Olympics (like Men's volleyball doesn't interest me yet I love to watch Kerri Walsh and Misty-May rock the game) so when I'm bored I have like 35 movies on my DVR that I browse.
16I am watching the Olympics, but they usually don't show the good stuff until LATE!!! So I've recently started watching THE CLEANER, and THE CLOSER. I love these two shows!!!
17I watch Mad Men and Army Wives and will watch The Hills when it comes back. Otherwise kinda dry, yeah...
18I always get super excited about the Olympics! The Olympic games is why I've woken up late for work a few mornings this week!
19I used to watch it when I was a kid, but is it just me or is it now like:
10 min of aerial shots of China
Recap of all American won medals
Commentary and list of upcoming events
Commercials
Watching athletes get ready for event
Side story about athlete visiting some touristy spot, coming from humble beginnings, or dating some other athlete
Commercials
Shot of coaches
One person finally goes
Replayed 5 times in slow-mo from different angles with more commentary
Commercials
Scores and listing of every country's standing
Repeat with less side stories for non-American athletes
Get to end of even and realize it was just a qualifying round
Even with DVR it's excruciating.
20I have been watching Olympics, but last night I took a break to watch Food Network's Throwdown with Bobby Flay because I knew the people Bobby Flay challenged! The Paz sisters of Las Paletas in Nashville!! YUMMY! My friend, their nephew, was on it a lot too!
